  1. Trading Hart is just about impossible. Based on his minor league numbers and what hes done so far in the majors, he could be as good as soriano, but more realistically, looks like a mike cameron type player. your not going to get a player the level of soriano for him because he is more than likely not that good. your not going to want a cameron type player, because he should be at least that good, and is ours and cheap for a long time. Perhaps this shouldnt even be looked at again for 4 more years. At that point, maybe I consider doing a deal, until then(barring the immergence of 2 perennial all star corner outfielders from our system) no thanx. -Don

  3. There are a lot of ifs involved in this but here goes. 1)If the A's continue to fall from standings 2)If they trade Rich Harden 3)If Bobby Kielty gets healthy and shows he can still hit LHPs How about a deal with them as they are usually active and trading harden would leave them with an open rotation spot? Im thinking something along the lines of Bush or Vargas for Kielty and Embree. Maybe mix a prospect in from one side or other to make things even, not too high of a guy. Now this isnt something I'd do until near the deadline, but if we can get Yo a little rest in there in the bullpen with a july call up, you can have Yo or Villy take Bush's/Vargas' spot in the rotation. Embree would be a solid lefty reliever with some closing experience this year as well. Kielty would be a great righty off the bench or take Mench's spot in the platoon, moving Mench to the righty off the bench role. Kielty is a FA in the off season, so you can still hunt for a real LF this off season, and embree is signed for next year and has an club option for 2009 both at reasonable dollars(especially if he ends up as our closer in 2008/9) -don edit:after reading my own post, my first thought is why would a team with a glut of OF get an OF w/o getting rid of one, just to clarify this is assuming that gwynn is in AAA trying to improve. 6 OF is ok if you look at it as we have 4 startes in 3 spots due to platoon, a righty off bench and a lefty off bench. itd be nice if either counsell or graffy had speed to be a pinch runner type, but i think we will have to live w/o bench speed as long as we have a platoon in left and 2 non-speedy backup IFs. its nice to have a little power from both sides of the plate on the bench too, in fact i value it more than speed.
  4. yep, me and fiddler on the roof... all about tradition. -don
  5. MASSACRE, EVISCERATE, DISEMBOWEL! i was in illinois last night, if they lose today, maybe i need to go down there and not come back. see yall in the chat room. -don
  6. i doubt the formula i used was the one youre thinking of. i want to say i got it from here years ago and use it, like i say in video games, and it seems to work. the problem with the lineup i posted is that it was based just on this years stats so far. the formula is take your 2 highest obps who are not your #1 ops guy and bat them 1-2, then go best to worst ops 3-8. its difficult to use numbers of guys strictly as the basis for a lineup as its difficult to compare minor league numbers of young players with major league numbers of vets. it would be easier 3-4 years from now just before many of these guys are free agents and we have legit 3-yr avg mlb stats to work from. -don
  7. i agree with dummy that lineup actually ummm doesnt suck, heres to hoping it works out. go brewers. -don
  8. its not neccessarily what id use, and its based entirely off of a small sample of a 60-odd game season, but i plugged in this years brewer stats into the lineup formula i use when i set lineups in video games and this is what i got: rf hart 3b braun 1b fielder ss hardy lf jenkins/mench 2b weeks c estrada cf hall obviously halls bad start and hardys good one has caused a bit of a strange lineup here, but i dont think ned has used it yet, so why not give it a try:P -don
  9. woo hoo estradas not batting 5th! the thougght-to-be-non-existant speck of light surrounded by the black hole that is our 9-1-2 in the lineup. oh well, if i want to be my normal glass is 3/4 full self id say counsell and graffy have looked better lately and i am convinced gross can hit rightys pretty well so maybe this will work. -don
  10. i get that they want some sort of lineup stability so im gunna give menchkins one spot in the lineup even though it may mess up the righty lefty righty lefty thing on certain days. heres my lineup: rf hart ss hardy 1b fielder 2b weeks lf menchkins 3b braun cf hall c estrada pitcher im torn about having estrada 8th as many have made the point of him being a free swinger in the 8th spot and all he will do is K a lot, but i just feel putting your weakest hitter last is the way to go. besides, maybe one of the reasons he has been such a free swinger has been his higher spots in the lineup throughout his career. you have coaches, teach him how to take some pitches. I am also torn on who should bat earlier between hall and braun, i guess at this point its about a push but i think it would be better for braun at this stage of his career to have a legit threat bat after him. -don
  11. ROFLMAO, i abso-F#$*%ing-lutely disagree, u r dumb brian. -don ps. please dont ban me before this becomes a discussion of how good or bad tony gwynn jr is, I haven't discussed that enough.
  12. Greinke would probably cost more in trade than he would yeild us. Id rather take on some of the royals salary and trade some prospects like maybe gwynn, dillard, and a middle infield guy like irribaren, perez, crabbe, or escobar in hopes of getting dejesus and david riske. dejesus is signed for like 4 more years at a fair price and can lead off and riske is a solid bullpen option for this year(and next if he pitches well enoough for us to pick up his option). royals would save about 5-6 million and pick up some solid prospects. if they think gwynn is a viable replacement down the line for dejesus, a gywnn, teahan, butler outfield could look nice in a few years and they lack MI prospects so maybe they would do it. We then let jenkins and mench go in the off season, and move hall to left giving us a hall dejesus hart OF with gross and nix off the bench. The only downside would be that we would have an even greater OF logjam this season. Finding PT for jenkins, hall, hart, mench, gross, and dejesus could be difficult and someone (gross or hart) would probably have to be sent down unless we could find another trading partner soon after. I guess I just salivate over a multiyear lineup of: Dejesus Hardy Weeks Fielder Hall Braun Hart Estrada Pitcher -Don
  13. I was just making my previous post to kinda fan the flames a bit, but in all seriousness, your basing Sheets' status as a #3 pitcher based on injuries he no longer has and a mediocre start to the season. Sample size is a phrase bandied about on here a lot and one would think all of the posters would get it by now. Is JJ Hardy a better power hitter than Bill Hall? Hes got 2 more HRs and a SLG thats .081 higher. No sensical person would try to make that argument. Suppan and Capuano are solid pitchers, but people usually regress to their career norms(although Cappy being younger is much more likely to have a breakout season which doesn't do that). Sheets is also likely to be closer to his career numbers by seasons end. If all that happens, Sheets would most likely be our best pitcher, followed by Capuano, then Suppan(unless Bush can convert his good peripheral stats to on the field results, in which case, he'd be ahead of Suppan). Bringing up salary is also unfair. To be honest, I don't think a single pitcher on this team is overpaid based on what contracts looked like this past off season. Does Sheets get paid that much more than Gil Meche? Again, Id rather have Sheeter. The way baseball works is that players who have reached their free agent years get a heck of a lot more money than those that havent. Sheets has put in his time, and recieved some of that cash. So too one day, will Capuano, Fielder, Weeks, Hardy, and others. Many of them will probably sign deals we say are overpaying them, but that is the nature of the beast. Do we here overrate Sheets? Probably, but we overrate a lot of our guys. I wonder during a certain infamous thread how many of us actually wondered if Bill Hall could pitch. We also regularly put the trade values of our own players way over what they actually are. Its called being a fan, and when you visit a site called brewerFAN.net, I guess its to be expected. -Don
  14. This sounds like a challenge. Will Sheets look like the Sheets of a few years ago, go out and dominate causing the bucksman to put his tail between his legs, or will Ben lay an egg, or worse, leave the game early, causing a poster of some disdain on this thread to reign victorious over one of our most noted statheads in rluz. Tickets are still available at Miller Park for tonights contest. Come on out Brewer faithful and see which poster will eat cake, and which will eat crow. To be honest, my moneys on Ben. -Don

  18. I was going to post a rant in the laughing at soriano? thread, but it seemed more like a vent so Im posting it here. Look, either you cheer for injuries or you don't. I hate it when people say I don't cheer for injuries, but...... and then they cheer for a freakin injury. Don't get me wrong, I suppose we all have our exceptions. If Sheffield breaks a leg or Bonds' leg falls off altogether, thats not an injury, that karma **** with you. I doubt Soriano or even the Cubs have done anything to deserve such harsh treatment. We often refer to Northsiders who visit our sacred Miller Park as classless. Lets try not to sink to their level. -Don

  20. "Ichiro Suzuki grounds into double play, pitcher Ben Sheets to shortstop J.J. Hardy to first baseman Tony Graffanino. Rey Ordonez out at 2nd. You won't see that too often" by that you mean rey ordonez on base??? oh well we lost but huzzah for sheets and turnbow its so nice having a team that doesnt suck -don

  22. there are typos, misspelled words, etc in my post cause its a freakin internet message board, not an english class. i can understand under the original thread title a personal attack of sucking may be unwarranted, however once this became the vent thread i would think the point would not be to attack other posters for the way they vent, but instead to let off steam. who hasnt watched a game when a player misses a key shot, dropped a key pass, or struck out with risp and you scream, "you freaking suck!!!"? i dont wish ill on any of these players (with of course bonds and sheffield as exceptions), but its cathartic to rant off every now and then. if it wasnt jim rome would be out of a job. -don
  23. boo frekin hoo, this is the fent thread now. if we wanna say someone sucks, so be it. can i pitch? no, but id like to see some of these athletes who have been coddled in school since 6th grade fix a computer at work like i do, or do any of our jobs. they probably cant cut it either. major league athletes get a lot of money to be athletes and if they cant cut it at the highest level, money paying fans have the right to pronoune that players suckitude to the masses. and as for david bell? we dont defend him because he was a brewer, its just hard to believe a roided up hghed beef boy could hit that badly. if he did use, maybe he didnt use enough. up the dosage dave, we need a third baseman who can hit!!! -don
  24. I get a lot of chisox info as my gf and her family are season ticket holders and i try to stay informed. supposedly the angels offered ervin santana and figgens for crede and garcia(this being a while back) and the declined, so even though he should be expendable for the sox(which even that im unsure of as their gm said they are not trading joe crede period in one interview), i dont think theyd take just any deal for him. on a side note, I was looking at al's blog and he says he compiled a list of 8 guys he will post as guys who could be had and fit the "3b now, help us elsewhere when braun is ready" mold. should be interesting. The guy I was thinking of last night when perusing one of my season preview mags was Olmedo Saenz from the dodgers. they like him as a great pinch hitter, but with all their prospects on the cusp, there may be room to deal him for a mid level guy or two. yeah hes in his upper 30s, but he isnt that expensive and hes kinda the right handed gabe gross, puts up great numbers while absolutely murdering left-handers. He can play 3rd and the OF so maybe try to keep him for a couple years, play 3rd now til koskies back for him to platoon with, and then when the braun era starts, platoon him with gross next year as the menchkins lite(now with better stats and at 10% the cost). -don
  25. they wont use gordon at 1st because they like the potential of ryan shealy. -don
