Since Brewerfan has grown so much over the past few years, we've instituted a "membership by approval" policy for quite some time now. In it, was ask that users write a comprehensive message about their background and why they feel that they can contribute to the site. Some new users have been really good about writing these (all we're looking for is a few sentences), some have been bad, and some have been in-between. We've actually gotten some pretty vile feedback on some of our messages (politely) asking for something a bit more comprehensive... So I guess in theory, we've already weeded out some people who were potential problems.

 

I guess what I'm saying here is that if you're thinking of posting here, please first observe things for at least a good month. Also realize that we're just not rubber-stamping new applicants. We don't want a resume or referrals, just a few sentences that make it clear that you've read the rules of the site, your background as a brewers fan, and how you found out about the site. Really, we'd like to keep adding new users to the site, but not if they're not serious about posting. If you're coming here simply, flame, vent or post one-line messages like "I agree" or "I don't agree", this is probably not the place for you.

 

Even if you don't post here because you're not a fan of how we reun things, I hope that we're able to provide you with stuff that you find interesting to read.

That's really the key, and it's one of the reasons for asking for the comprehensive applications. The flames, vents, and one-liners are simply not interesting. Members and guests shouldn't have to weed through that kind of stuff to get to the good posts.
