Six figures doesn't buy you much these days at ESPN

Aww Rick Reilly, the epitome of the modern sports columnist. The pinnacle of his profession. Why sports reporting sucks!

http://sports.espn.go.com/espnmag/story?id=3554767

His latest column bemoans the fate of Mitch Jones, who has hit a bunch of minor league home runs without getting to the majors! It must be because of steroids! Lets see how well Mr. Jones actually hit:

.852 OPS at 22 in low A--not too bad but hardly earth shattering

.774 OPS at age 23 in high A-oops guess he'll need to repeat

.845 in high at age 24-might as well promote him

.709 OPS at age 24 in AA well he's got to repeat

.756 OPS at age 25 in AA he's a good guy at least!

.880 OPS at age 26 in AA maybe he's just a late bloomer!

.854 OPS at age 27 in AAA hardly promotion worthy

But hey it must be a conspiracy!

ESPN pays Reilly to get people to read him, not for the quality of his product. You reading him to complain about him help justifies their decision.

Yeah, I never click on a Reilly article because doing so would help ESPN justify their decision to hire him. Obviously one person won't make a huge difference, but I'm trying to do my part.

I used to like most of his columns in SI but it seems like he's become a complete idiot since going to ESPN. Does anyone remember his comentating during the homerun derby. Some of the stuff he said was borderline racist.

If the guy was good enough to make it to the majors he would have made it already regeardless of the steroids. ML talent is hard enough to find I doubt if organizations are "sitting on" legitimate major league prospects. Reilly is, and always has been, an idiot.

I like the line about one guy being forced to endure all of the indignities of minor league ball, including wearing "camo jerseys."

Yeah, you'd never see that at the ML level ....
