Aaron Heilman to Cubs for Ronny Cedeno + Garrett Olson

Looks like they're just adding some more pitching depth. Heilman will compete for the 5th starter spot or pitch out of the pen. Heilman is the type of guy that i'd like to see the Brewers get in that he's a back end guy and he's cheap. Of course, I don't think he's very good, but we need some depth.

Heilman's solid, but was he really worth even further depleting the MIF depth? I'm not high on Cedeno, but now as best I can tell, the Cubs' MIF situation is Theriot/Fontenot/Miles. That could get ugly.

Its actually for Ronny Cedeno and Garret Olson, I like the deal for the M's, I think both have decent upside. This also makes me think that they will not be going after Peavy now, which makes me happy.

I've always liked Cedeno and he seemed to be on the upswing...I'm glad to see him out of a Cubs' uniform.

It also makes me wonder if any Peavy deal is well and truly dead, or if it's just another pre-cursor.

The Cubs have ZERO chance of getting Peavy now not like they really had much of a chance before this trade anyways. I'm hoping this now will shut up the rumors about the Cubs getting Peavy because right now they don't have much or anything to trade that the Padres would be interested in.

The Peavy really did shoot himself in the foot with his no trade clause and his demands if he were to be traded and the Padres also shot themselves in the foot by not taking the deal that Atlanta gave them which was rather good.

This move right here is puzzling to me on why the Cubs traded away more of their infield depth. First Derosa and now Cedeno. Granted Derosa was probably more valuable than Cedeno was to the Cubs. This could be a very bad move by the Cubs especially if Fotenot or Theriot go down with an injury. If one goes down the replacement would be Miles who is a major downgrade from Cedeno or Derosa.

they are 100% committed to theriot, miles, and fontenot.

i dont think they will get peavy now.

mlbtr and devine now say they may be interested in looper or wolf.

Great deal for the Mariners in my opinion. Olson has some upside and Cedeno is ok.

Interesting what this could mean for the Peavy talks. On one hand, Cedeno was rumored as one of the players that would likely be involved, wasn't he? On the other hand, maybe this allows the Cubs to deal one of their younger arms now that they have depth. They could send someone like Sean Marshall to the Padres now and keep Heilman as that emergency starter, or maybe even deal Heilman as well.

If he repeats last year's numbers, though, I don't think this is going to hurt the Brewers too badly. I got a kick out of this response on NSBB:

Hmmm..has the potential to be that guy in the bullpen who makes me use obscenities and utter the names of religious figures in a blasphemous way a lot.

Heilman took a big step back last year. If he can return to his 2005-2007 form its not a terrible deal. However I don't really understand why you trade a servicable 25 year old SS/2B and a 25 year old LH that looks like he could make an impact for Heilman. I think it is a good tade by Jack Z.

With Garrett Olson being a part of this trade, it means the Cubs effectively traded Felix Pie and Ronny Cedeno for Aaron Heilman. Jim Hendry's really hard to figure out.

The Cubs need all this depth because Harden's practically guaranteed to miss time every year (he's already hurt, for what it's worth) and Zambrano has shown signs of wearing down. He's still a very good pitcher, but not where he was 2 or 3 years ago...all those innings and poor conditioning are starting to catch up to him. If Harden and Zambrano miss significant time, they're down to Ryan Dempster (who's bound to regress) and Ted Lilly being their top guys.

Is Zambrano really showing sign s of breaking down or is that just wishful thinking on our part? I don't know what type of conditioning program he has but I doubt it's any worse than Sheets was and he was still a pretty good contributor last year.
There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

Wow, Felix Pie and Cedeno for Heilman, when you consider the two moves needed to make this deal happen. What a horrible series of trades by the Cubs. Just goes to show why they haven't won a WS in 100 years, when you have a front office that makes moves like this, it explains a lot.

It's weird... I thought Hendry made some good moves last year, but there really isn't anything that he's done so far this year that's made sense to me. Well, aside from adding Bradley, that is.

Even the Bradley move is questionable given his injury history. Lets not forget giving Dempster a big 4 year extension reall early in the offseason before the poor market was established. In hindsight he overpaid big time for Demp.

So let's look back on that JJ Putz trade to the Mets.

Mets get Putz, Jeremy Reed, and Sean Green from the Mariners. Mariners send minor leaguer Luis Valbuena to Cleveland.

Mariners get Heilman, Endy Chavez, Jason Vargas, 3 minor leaguers PLUS, highly regarded Cleveland prospect Franklin Gutierrez form the Indians.

Then they trade Heilman for Cedeno and Olson.

So, Mariners trade 4 players, and wind up 5 major leaguers + three minor leaguers, who's names I can't find anywhere.

Great job, Jack Z!
