Software installation on a netbook

If I wanted to install a cd onto a netbook, could I use the drive from another computer connected via ethernet or USB to install said cd? I know I could go out and buy an external cd drive, but I honestly don't think I'm going to need to do this more than a handful of times in the foreseeable future.

Help?

There is "virtual cd" software you can use, where can emulate a CD from a folder on your computer (or a share from another computer). You could probably also copy from the CD to a cheap USB thumb drive and do it, depending on what you're trying to install.
