2009 hurlers revisited

Posted

So with all the hoopla about this years draft I thought it might be interesting to go back and take a look at the pitchers selected between Arnett/Heckathorn in 2009. Now I know it's far too early to make any definitive conclusions about any of these guys based off of two months of minor league stats, but I thought the results were at least interesting enough for possible discussion. This is extremely quick and dirty (not to mention poorly formatted), but here goes...

PICK | NAME | AGE | LEVEL | ERA | WHIP | BB9 | K9

26 | Arnett | 22 | A | 7.11 | 1.56 | 3.2 | 6.8
36 | Miller | 22 | A+ | 3.12 | 1.30 | 4.7 | 8.9
40 | Skaggs | 18 | A | 2.55 | 1.06 | 1.7 | 9.3
42 | Richards | 22 | A | 3.33 | 1.21 | 2.6 | 8.6
43 | Boxberger | 22 | A+ | 3.20 | 1.23 | 2.7 | 9.9
44 | Scheppers | 22 | AA | 3.32 | 1.47 | 5.2 | 9.5
45 | Belfiore | 21 | A | 2.67 | 1.31 | 3.6 | 8.5

So the six pitchers drafted (not so) immediately after Arnett have all had decidedly better results to this point. The Scheppers story is pretty well known, but does anyone know if any of these other names were linked to the Brewers as a possibility at pick 26 last year?

An interestin thing to add would be what each guy signed for.
Arnett: $1,197,000

Miller: $889,200

Skaggs: $1,000,000

Richards: $802,800

Boxberger: $857,000

Scheppers: $1,250,000

Belfiore: $725,000

Heckathorn: $776,000

Arnett's teammate, Matt Bashore, was taken with the pick before Heckathorn, but has thrown only two professional innings, which is presumably why sveumrules excluded him; Bashore signed for $751,500.

The Brewers had Miller, Belfiore and Bashore at their pre-draft last year, so they were in the mix for the Brewers picks, but probably not 26.
