For those who enjoy Shaara, the sequel and prequel of Killer Angels are equally as good, as well as the pre-prequel about the Mexican War. He has written 2 more about the Revolution, one about WW1 and one about WW2, with another on the way about WW2. I did not enjoy those as much as the first 4. Kinda got tired of the premise of the fictional history.

I thought I'd rejuvenate this thread, as I've read some good ones this week. I read Teacher Man by Frank McCourt, about his 30 years teaching public high schools in New York - nice quick read.

 

100 Years of Solitude only lasted for about a month as my all time favorite and has been since replaced by The Kite Runner, which I finished a few minutes ago. Simply a must-read for everyone alive.

Although I think a lot of the recommendations are right on the book that I've been touting lately is The Alienist by Caleb Carr. Fantastic, fast-paced murder mystery / thriller set in turn of the century New York. Carr is a historian so he is able to call on those skills to set the tone for a really exciting story. I've recommended it to 4 people in the last two months and they all loved it.

Right now, it is "The Drawing of the Three" by Stephen King. It is the second book of the Dark Tower sereis, which is one awesome series.

I loved Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. I haven't read many books outside of the basics like Lord of the Rings and such, but Lolita would definitely be my favorite.

Kite Runner was excellent--I need to get the next book from Hosseini. By the way, Kite Runner is out as a movie this fall (I don't remember exactly when, though).

wow, interesting. as i was reading it, i wondered if they would be able to pull it off as a movie. i almost don't know if i would even want to see it, as i don't think they could.

EDIT: upon further IMDB review, I will definitely go see it - by the director of Finding Neverland. Nov 2, 2007 release date.

I'm usually willing to see a movie based on a novel, and I will likely see Kite Runner at some point. I am curious to see how this novel will translate to the big screen.

Another one of my favorites is "Swan Song" by Robert McCammon. I read it ten years ago or so and gave it to somebody and just bought a new copy from B&N the other day. I never re-read books but I'm going to read this one again. It's a post apocalyptic masterpiece. If you liked "The Stand" (which I didn't) you'll be blown away by "Swan Song." Somebody a few pages back mentioned "Straight Man" by Richard Russo. I've read all of his books and that one is actually my least favorite (but still a good book). "The Risk Pool" is my favorite by him.

As an aside, I think it's relevant to point out that while Stephen King's early stuff, plus stuff like Shawshank and the Green Mile were excellent works, his recent stuff is pure crap, seemingly churned out to make a buck. The last 3 books of the Dark Tower series (especially part 6) were bad, with the ending being a brutal, hollow letdown. The last 2, Lisey's Story, and The Cell.......just plain crap.

I'm not a sci-fi fan but I picked up "Ender's Game" last month because of how good I heard it is.

I also agree that Kite Runner is excellent. I thought it started out a tad bit slow, but after 20-30 pages that took me 2 days to read, I finished the book in the next 2 days. Great book.
