  1. Feels like a lot of stories are missing out on the emphasis on advanced analytics. I've been impressed with the team's commitment to advanced analytics across the board - defensive shifts, managing pitching / the bullpen, pinch hitting, etc. That kind of leadership comes from the top or they would have fired CC the first time they lost a game because of a defensive shift.
  2. I don’t support using banned substances in sports. Period. That being said, it isn’t all the same... using a cream one time to help recover from an injury feels different to me than regularly taking substances designed to increase strength, speed, etc. it always felt to me like there should be different tiers of punishment based off what they were doing and Braun’s was a pretty low level infraction. The debacle that surrounded it made it worse. I dont live in Wisconsin so every time baseball came up, this came up and I stood up for him for a long time during the process. I personally felt like I got burned a bit there and wish he would have handled it way different. All that said, I don’t think that is why he gets booed so much. I think he has a quietly confident and cocky demeanor that doesn’t play well with the general public. Outspoken and brash players with similar struggles seem to get dismissed as “just being them”. The “good guys “ find a way to skate through as well. Braun just never had the PR people around him to build a persona that would withstand or re-endear people to him quickly. I hope he has an amazing couple of years with the crew and enjoy every time he comes up to bat.
  3. I remember being a bartender back when Braun and Fielder were just about to break into the MLB. A guy was talking trash about the brewers sucking (he wasn’t wrong) but I tried to inject some optimism by saying there are two HOF caliber players about to join the roster. He called me crazy but I don’t regret those statements all these years later. Prince didn’t have the longevity; which is obviously a bummer. I honestly think the hourly is still out on Braun. In a hypothetical that ignores PED issues (bc they’re gonna have to get a LITTLE flexible on that) what kind of numbers does braun have to put up in the next 5 years to make it? Given reduced playing time are there some statistics that could isolate his amount of playing time vs others of the Same era to justify it? He’s clearly not going to make it on counting numbers alone so what does the path look like?
  4. So glad I was able to catch the end of this one. I live in a time zone where the games are almost half over or more by the time I get home from work there have been times in the past where I would often decide the time and emotional investment weren’t worth it because the odds of winning were so low and it didn’t feel like we were playing for anything. This season feels different. This bulls pen can hang and the offense is well rounded enough to get us back into most games.
  5. Crazy to me that I logged on tonight and found this thread front and center. I had just gotten home from work and had a short break before I needed to meet my wife for dinner. Decided to turn on the radio feed instead of the MLB TV feed... It was 8th inning and the comeback was just starting. Uecker literally had me jumping around in the kitchen with excitement in both innings. When I met my wife for dinner the first thing I talked about was how amazing it was that an 85 year old man can still bring that kind of energy and fun to the game. I don’t watch a lot of other teams games but I listen to a decent amount while I’m doing stuff around the house because I like the cadence of baseball as a background noise. Most of the other announcers are terrible. I hope that we have the privilege of listening to Ueck when he’s 90.
  6. The most interesting question imbedded in this topic is how much do we think they'll raise the payroll next year (and the years to come.). There are levells of certainty with some existing players that allow us to get to a general budget for 2018 butt I can see the front office deciding to go the rout of bringing in some key players they believe have us in playoff contention. Are they ready to drop 30 miliion on the gambit? 10 million? 20 million? That's the biggest question mark in my mind.
  7. Batman was fantastic. In depth analysis that wasn't found anywhere else on the brewers at that time. Clancy, Brian & AndThat certainly had regular thoughtful contributions that are missed.
  8. Every time they say Cody Asche i think that they're talking about the Nathan's Hot Dog contest guy. Guess I'm just hungry.
  9. Yeah listening online and they're brutal. Had to plug my phone into stereo to listen to WTMJ feed and watch the video on mute. It isn't perfectly in synch but its better than listening to them. Annoying voices and bad commentary.
  10. This team needs one more consistent bat to be a contender over the course of the season. Folks have identified the likely spots for upgrades - 1b, 2nd and LF. I don't really care where the upgrade is made but I think that we have to make a move if we're going to make a run for it. My biggest concern is that I don't know if they have enough depth or high level prospects in the minors to really swing a deal for another star that can carry the team for a week or so while others are slumping, injured, etc.
  11. I love watching Gomez play the game. I love the hustle and the passion. We need that spark plug type player! I do think he needs to get his temper in control and shut his mouth. Let the play do the talking for him and understand that there will be repercussions for his hard nosed play. He's going to get pitched at and have people chewing him out. Just accept it and steal a base after getting plunked or yelled at.
  12. If he has the stuff that's great! I'll be excited to hear more about what he throws. One of the positives with converting position players is that their arms are fresh and weren't abused in HS / College so in theory they shouldn't be as injury prone.
  13. I'll eat crow on my 2013 season prediction where I declared him the surprise player of the year (or something along those lines.)
  14. I would be fine with a Simmons or Castro type extension. I think it is worth the gamble.
  15. I'm not sure where to look this kind of thing up, but Weeks seemed to bulk up significantly a few years ago. Perhaps I'm making that up, but I remember seeing him in spring training a few years ago and thinking - "Dang... that dude hit the weights this off-season." In my mind I have always wondered if that had something to do with his regression at the plate. This is just mindless commentary, but I think there is a real chance that Weeks feels the pressure and steps up again this year. Obviously we all hope that is the case.
  16. Agree that incentive laden Spring Training invite would be a great move. He's not quite 2 years removed from Tommy John so a little more velocity could come back. (that's the rule of thumb right???) Career relief numbers are very solid. I would give it serious consideration if his throwing session went well.
  17. 1. A big year for Ryan Braun. 2. A frank assessment of where the team is at sometime in mid-summer. I fear being right around .500 and having management convince themselves that we're only aging veteran away from competing for the playoffs. Worse yet, and more likely in my mind, is that they feel that sticking with the current crew will give us a good chance to get to the playoffs and don't make any radical moves. I feel like the pieces will all fall in place (Ramirez, Braun, Segura, Gomez, and young pitchers) ALL play to their highest levels and the team is in a very strong position mid-season or we're going to scuffle along in mediocrity all year. If it is playing out to be the later I hope they get aggressive and start building for a couple years down the road. 3. A draft heavily focused on high ceiling players. I'm willing to draft a bunch of high risk / high reward players to get a few potential impact players in the system. I don't love following the farm teams nearly as much as I used to because there aren't the potential superstars scattered throughout the system. 4. I want clarity in our starting pitching roster. Of all the marginal and "what if" guys I want at least 2 preferably three to step up and prove they can consistently perform. That will allow us to identify who is for real and who needs to be replaced. 5. Jean Segura and Carlos Gomez stay healthy and continue to play the game in a way that forces me to tune in and watch even if the team stinks.
  18. I could see a Gomez like trajectory. Lawrie seems really immature and might not actually be ready for the MLB yet. His raw talent says that he should be there, but the numbers aren't showing up yet. I could see him having a few monster years between the ages of 25 - 30. Regardless of what happens in the future, even if he puts together a few All Star seasons, I think that this was a good trade for the Brewers and I would do it again in a heartbeat.
  19. Schroader - "And now you've got to be wondering if you're RR how long you can stick with Hellweg." No kidding Rock.
