I'll admit I don't know a ton about 18-year-old Carlos Luna, but it might be time to start learning about him. He tossed a complete game (the first two innings of which came back on June 20th when the game was originally started) striking out eleven batters over nine innings and allowing only the one unearned run. He also did not walk a batter and now has 36 strikeouts compared to just four walks.

 

Luna (MiLB player page) is from Panama, and hopefully the Brewers have as much success with their most recent Panamanian signing.

 

This is 17-year-old 6'1", 170 lb. RHP Deymar Alvarado, who will make his pro debut soon as he has been added to the DSL roster.

 

He's on Twitter here but it's an idle account (2013).

 

 

Alvarado signed his contract in May, thus he was not part of the July 2nd signing period. No word on bonus details at this time.

Promising 18-year-old Panamanian catcher Johel Atencio is on the 7-day DL as well.

 

As per this twitter reply from Brewers Player Development, looks like a lengthy absence.

Atencio was formally transferred to the 60-day DL at Maryvale today. We don't have a definitive injury update. Time is certainly on his side...

NAPLES, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team lost another pitcher to the pros late Wednesday, and the effect of the newest departure might ripple into next season.

 

Right-hander Jordan Desguin, one of the Eagles' best pitchers last season, signed with the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday. After he was taken in the 36th round of last month's Major League Baseball draft, rising senior Desguin told FGCU coach Dave Tollett he was leaning toward returning to school.

 

Just eight days before Desguin signed, Tollett told the Daily News he though the pitcher was returning. Expecting Desguin back, Tollett stopped recruiting a replacement pitcher for next season.

 

"It's always a possibility (players) will sign, but I really though Jordan was coming back," Tollett said. "We stopped the recruiting process, stopped looking at some junior-college kids.

 

"It's a tough blow for us in the middle of July."

 

Some schools recruit more players than they have scholarships to protect themselves if someone goes pro. FGCU doesn't, but Tollett said maybe it should.

 

Desguin went 6-1 in 20 appearances last season, tied for the most victories on FGCU's staff. He held opposing batters to a .216 average, best on the team.

 

"We're looking (for a recruit), but there's no one available of (Desguin's) quality," Tollett said. "He's a special arm, a special kid. We're not only losing a good player, but a great kid and a leader on the team."

 

Mike Murray, who led the Eagles in innings pitched last season, signed with the Oakland Athletics after being drafted in the 32nd round. Tollett expected Murray to leave.

 

Desguin announced his signing on Twitter simply by writing "#brewcrew" on Wednesday.

 

"I cannot being to express my appreciation for Florida Gulf Coast University for preparing me for the next level," he posted on Twitter. "God has blessed me with this opportunity and I cannot wait to take advantage of it …"

 

Though Tollett's pitching staff might suffer next season, he didn't fault Desguin for chasing his dream.

 

"I'm happy for him, sad for the Eagles," Tollett said. "In the end, you've got to be happy for the kid. As much of a business as (college baseball) is, you've always got to look out for the kids first."

I really like Houle as well. He has (or at least had, before injury) an absolute cannon for an arm behind the dish, and has a good idea at the plate with some pop. If he gets back to Wisconsin next year, he'll be right about average age for the Midwest League.

 

Dustin Houle with a couple of tweets expressing his excitement and appreciation. Remember, he dealt with serious hand fractures before the Tommy John surgery, it's been a long road back.

Switch-hitting 20-year-old Venezuelan catcher Kevin Martinez back to Maryvale after a "Hitless in Montana" stint (0-for-17), the natural Big Sky country sequel to "Sleepless in Seattle".

So all it took was one Maryvale appearance for 6th round RHP Eric Hanhold (Brewerfan Draft Forum Link) to get bumped not to Helena, but to Appleton, where he joins 2nd round RHP Cody Ponce, 5th round SS Blake Allemand, and 27th round RHP Jon Perrin.

 

LHP David Carver (35th round, 2014, Lamar) turns 24 in October, so the bump to Wisconsin makes sense in that regard.

We'd be remiss in not acknowledging that RHP Eric Marzec had a pretty darn good run with the Brewers organization, especially for a 30th round pick (2010, Youngstown State). Career 3.12 ERA, did well in his mini-glimpses at AAA (16.1 innings), and was an entertaining follow in terms of refining his craft in Australia and Venezuela in recent winters.

 

Eric was always a good Twitter follow, sharing pictures from exotic locales on training hikes and such.

 

Truly wishing him the best in his baseball pursuits and other interests, hopefully we see him in another affiliated uniform soon.

By referring to our Deadline Day Thread in the Draft Forum, you'll see that there are three new Brewers today (Nathan Kirby, Max McDowell, Michael Petersen).

Baseball America's Matt Eddy reported that the Brewers have released 24-year-old 2009 2nd round pick catcher Cameron Garfield.

 

Garfield, as we had mentioned earlier this week, was scheduled to become a minor league free agent at season's end, despite never reaching AA (.609 career OPS in 259 games with Brevard County).

 

Nothing has been indicated on MiLB.com yet, and the Manatees staff is always on top of reporting and processing those transactions when they become official.

man, too bad about Garfield. his 2012 year as a 21 year old in A ball .910 OPS really had many hoping he'd be our catcher for the future. and although the brewers found some impact players in latter rounds, the 2009 draft continues to disappoint- now all our six picks in the first three rounds are out of the system, and none of them to date have made it to the majors. combine that with the well documented Mike Trout debacle, and well, disappointing. good luck Cameron and Eric Marzec, too

The top of the 2009 draft was awful... no doubt.

 

However it's hard to complain about a draft that produced Khris Davis, Scooter Gennett, Tyler Cravy, Caleb Theilbar, and Mike Fiers.

 

No impact talent there but plenty of averagish MLB role players.

Dodgers release Drillers saves leader Jeremy Horst

In a season filled with surprising roster moves for the Tulsa Drillers, there was another Wednesday as saves leader and Texas League all-star lefty Jeremy Horst (career stats, major and minor) was released by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

 

Horst, 29, had a 1.64 ERA and nine saves in 32 appearances for Tulsa. He had a 3.33 ERA in 72 relief outings in the majors from 2011-13.

 

Considering his performance and experience, it was stunning he never was promoted from Tulsa.

 

Horst was a team leader with the Drillers and had organized a team outing the previous day.

 

It shouldn't take very long for Horst to hook on with another organization. For example, St. Louis would have been better off with Horst, who has better stuff than lefty Nick Greenwood, who gave up a walkoff homer on Saturday at Pittsburgh.

 

To replace Horst, the Dodgers are sending Tulsa another reliever with major league experience, hard-throwing Juan Jaime.

The reason we post this is that Devan Fink, one of the new breed of teenage transaction news gatherers, tweets "Source: #Brewers agree to sign LHP Jeremy Horst on a minor league deal. Will likely sign Monday and report to Triple-A Colorado Springs."

Horst most recently pitched in the big leagues (not particularly well) with the Phillies in 2013, as his linked stat page above indicates. He was stellar during a 32-game run with Philadelphia in 2012, however.

At Colorado Springs, infielder Luis Sardinas, out since July 6th with what we've learned was an ankle injury, has been activated from the Sky Sox DL.

 

Sardinas is active for tonight's game, but not in the starting lineup.

 

To make room on the AAA roster, OF Bryan Petersen was placed on the Temporary Inactive List.
