Use low payroll

Since the Brewers are dropping payroll by trading vets and not signing anyone, they should take advantage of this flexibility in 2 ways :

1- can they sign guys long term and front-load contracts in the next year or 2 to allow flexibility upon contention again?

2- are there any players to trade for as a favor to another team in order to get talent (like Bronson Arroyo last year). Maybe Melvin Upton, who could also be a temporary CF.

Who says they're not signing anyone? Lots of time before that 40 man roster is set.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I meant not signing anyone with a hefty salary that would stop them from being able to take on another teams overpaid player

Melvin Upton, Jr is an interesting option depending on who else the Padres are willing to add in for taking on his contract. Luis Perdomo fits the criteria Stearns is looking for in a pitcher and would be a nice piece to add to our farm system. Maybe we do a Segura and Jeffress for Hedges, Perdomo and Upton, Jr.
