Minor league depth

Posted

As part of my top 25, I have a spreadsheet that organizes all the players I ranked by position. It gives some interesting insights to our minor league strengths and weaknesses. Don't worry if these aren't ranked the way you agree with... the point is to show depth.

RHSP depth is the strength as 10 of my top 20 and 12 of my top 25 are RH starting pitchers.

LHSP conversely was really weak. I think Kodi will bounce back, but still better chance as a reliever. Kirby and Lemons have a chance, but are a long way away

C - Interesting depth, but no can't miss prospects. But I'm guessing at least one of them makes the MLB level.

Thanks for compiling this. Things that jump out...

- Orlando Arcia isn't going anywhere anytime soon

- could use a big year from a catcher or two, hopefully we see some big leaps there this year

- here's hoping a LH starter falls to our slot in round 1 of the June draft

- impressive OF and RHP depth

RHSP is so deep that list didn't even include the likes of Perrin, Supak, Herrera, Zack Brown, and Missaki among others. (Although I would move Taylor Williams off the list.)

Yes, Perrin and Brown were in my top 25, but couldn't crack the top 10 RHSP list. I'm hoping for Missaki, but given his arm issues I have little faith that he makes the MLB squad.

When I did the ratings, I debated Williams at RP or SP, but left him at SP. Its a small chance they use him at SP anymore, but I'll give up that hope when he is pitching out of a BP this year (MLB or AAA).

Pretty sure Lemons and Vassalloti are righty's, which speaks more to the lack of lefty depth in the system. Could throw in Murphy, Lillis or Fox (probably in that order). Having seen Orf enough times now, he doesn't really have the arm for 3b in any real capacity other than off-day coverage. Which again speaks to a very large dearth of talent at another position.

Nick Ramirez and Brad Kuntz should be 1-2 on the LHRP list. I'd have KJ Harrison on top of my catcher list. He was a 3 time All Pac Ten Catcher. That's no small feat and he adjusted well with the bat to pro ball. If he can stick at catcher, I think he might be the steal of the 2017 draft. Henry's got a chance to be really good too. Will be fun to follow those two.

Clint Terry was released last year at some point.

Before the season, he didn't even pitch in 2017.

Nuts... I thought I had vetted all of them... I did just dust this off after 1.5 years. New job and moving to a new city will do that to you.
