Is there any chance Alex Gordon, the 3rd baseman, will fall to us at #5??? If so, is there any reason to either not take him or take someone instead of him?

There's always a chance any player could fall further than expected. The draft is 6 months away, and the college (and high school) season hasn't even started yet. Gordon could slump, get injured, or even worse; be advised by Scott Boras. If he stays healthy, has a good spring and isn't represented by Boras I have a hard time believing he would fall to #5.

But if he does, and there aren't any other major concerns, the only reason we shouldn't take him is if Justin Upton also falls for some reason.

Snippet about Gordon from today's Mariner System chat on BA

Quote:
Q: &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Ian from Jersey asks:

Yesterday Alex Gordon had to be considered the favorite for the M's #3 draft pick come June. However, with Adrian Beltre on board, has that changed?

A: &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp

Jim Callis: Not sure Nebraska 3B Alex Gordon is the definitive favorite for the Mariners, but the Beltre signing shouldn't change things. Teams draft for the future, not the immediate present, and a lot of scouts aren't sold on Gordon staying at the hot corner anyway

darn...looks like we are going to have to settle for another HS righthander

Unless you're being sarcastic, why? There are going to be plenty of good players available that aren't high school pitchers.

what pick do we have??? 5???

Yup. I mention the 5th pick in my response just above, plus you can always check out the draft order which is part of the draft coverage on this site, or even view the draft order thread pinned towards the top of this thread.

How big are the question marks about him being able to stick a third? Puss for an arm? No range or what?

How much of his value is in his position? Does he have a high enough ceiling that he would be a top 10 pick at another position?

I think Gordon stays at 3B from what I've seen of him. I know Kat, who has seen him play over the course of an entire game (or two) thinks he can stick at 3B as well. His arm is very strong, and he has good quickness for a man his size. CarolinaTommy is another poster that has seen him play at 3B without expressing much, if any, concern about his defense. I'm not really sure why this is coming up now, unless this is the effect of him playing 1B for Team USA, which had more to do with Ryan Zimmerman's presence on the team (who could be a Gold Glover at the hot corner).

And I think his bat could play anywhere.

Yup, I've seen him play on turf and he looked just fine to me over there. Had very good range to his left and a strong arm. I was impressed with ever aspect of his game. I would be suprised if he didn't stay at 3B.

Yeah i was being sarcastic.....its nice seemingly not having any major needs like we have in the past, excluding third base of course, so we can go back to the best player available strategy. What are some thoughts about the catcher, Clement? I have a strange feeling about palmisano not working out. i hope he does, but it would be nice to have some insurance
