Will DS be able to make an Aug 31 trade

There's always hope:

8/30/82

The #Astros trade Don Sutton to the #Brewers for players to be named later and cash. Milwaukee later sent Kevin Bass, Frank DiPino, and Mike Madden to Houston to complete the trade.

Sutton goes 4-1 in 7 starts for the Brewers down the stretch

This is completely made-up fan fiction, but I like this deal. I could handle Zimmermann at $24 million through 2020.

That seems like a bit much for me. They'd have to kick in even more.

We have probably 6 or 7 guys that are the caliber of Zimmermann already for next season. He may be a slight upgrade this year but there are far too many similar or superior options the following years to be paying him $10-12 million/year for 2 more years.

August 31 is just the deadline for playoff rosters, you can still trade for someone after August 31. Obviously any player you trade for you would like to have for the playoffs but you need to get there first. And they could really need some pitching help in any role to get there.

With the caveat that the price is really high, so the risk is a lot more than I would do if I was GM, Jordan Zimmermann does seem a bit like a guy who might be helped moving back to the NL It's also encouraging that his whip has gone down this year and his Ks have recovered to (better than) career average. DET, besides being in the AL, is also a bit below average defensively, so if the Brewers were to put in the A-team defense for him, I could easily see him matching Chacin, who has been our best starter this year (Miley's missed a bit too much time to take that trophy), and would probably have the highest ceiling for a post season run this year. It's also great that he barely walks anybody.

Curtis Granderson. You heard it here first n
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Granted, this is the first time we've really been going this well towards a playoff push since 2011, but I can't remember ever seeing this many ML level trade acquisitions in a single year by the Brewers, since I've started following them seriously in '02. 6 deadline moves, 3 for each deadline!

7 if you count the Jordan Lyles claim.

I agree ... that's a lot of turnover for a team that has been near the top of the standings all season. I love that they aren't being complacent, though. Going to make for an exciting September.

As we all know, though, our team that's near the top of the standings has lost 2 SPs to lengthy injuries since the season started (Davies, Suter) and had many other guys perform below expectations (Santana, Arcia, Villar, Pina for the 3 months before he went on the DL, even Braun, not to mention Barnes, Knebel, & another pitcher or two).

I think if anyone had predicted around Opening Day that we'd add Moustakas, Schoop, Granderson, Soria, Lyles, Cedeno, & Gio Gonzalez between Memorial & Labor Days.... well, I'd ask them for Powerball number suggestions, too.

If anything is perplexing, though, it's this: How in the world did Stearns make all those trades today and forget to get us another infielder?
