jacob barnes designated for assignment

jacob barnes, who was optioned to class aaa san antonio, has been designated for assignment.

the brewers have seven days to try to release or outright barnes to the minors. if barnes clears outright waivers, he will be forced to accept the minor league assignment.

barnes will enter 2020 spring training with no minor league options remaining.

trent grisham takes barnes' spot on the 40-man roster.

I know that the trade deadline has passed, and there are no more waiver trades, but can teams continue to trade players that are in DFA limbo? I would think that would be a way for teams to still make minor August-like moves to fill roster holes.

it appears that barnes would have to be claimed by another team, not traded.

this means that the brewers would have to intend to assign barnes to the minor leagues, but first, they would have to offer him to all 29 teams, any one of whom has the option to submit a waiver claim and add him to their 40-man roster and either recall him or option him.

if barnes clears waivers and is outrighted to the minor leagues, it appears that he cannot be traded until after the world series (but he may be eligible for minor league free agency by that point).

Thanks for the link, so based on that he can't be traded but a team can claim him and put him on the postseason roster still.

That's the way I understood it as well. So in reality they have 7 days to release or outright him, as a trade is out of the question.

thank you as well for clarifying. if i understand correctly, the only hopes that barnes has of getting on a 40-man roster again in 2019 are:

--being claimed by another team after being placed on outright waivers by the brewers; he is then either optioned or recalled

--not being claimed by another team, being forced to accept the outright assignment to the brewers' minor leagues, but then having his contract selected again by the brewers (see jay jackson's transaction history this year)

--given his outright release and then signing a major league contract with another club
