Winter Baseball Leagues

Brewer Fanatic Contributor

While the Arizona Fall League (8 players assigned) and Australian Winter League (7 players assigned) already have separate threads, I thought we could note other leagues here:

RHP's Matt Hardy and Carlos Luna were on the September Panama roster that qualified for the World Baseball Classic (this explains Hardy's placement on the Temp Inactive List late in Nashville's season). Hardy apparently has some Panamanian bloodlines, hopefully both pitchers are on the spring WBC roster.

In addition, Hardy has found a winter ball home in Puerto Rico - article:

Creoles sign Triple-A pitcher from Milwaukee Brewers

Luna, it should be noted, will be a minor league free agent this fall unless signed back.

This looks like a good place to post that the Brewers have 3-4 players participating in the WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup: P Michele Vassalotti, 1B Jesus Chirinos and SS Antonio Pinero for Venezuela, plus C Alex Hall for Australia. Actually, Pinero was announced, but is not presently listed on the website roster.

Chirinos had a nice first game (2-for-3, double, 2 RBIs) as Venezuela romped 9-0 over South Africa. Hall batted clean-up in Australia's opening game, but went hitless in a 3-2 loss to Mexico.

After winning its opener, Venezuela fell 5-2 today against Japan, but don't blame the Brewers' prospects. 1B Jesus Chirinos delivered another 2-for-3, 2-RBI day including a double, while Michele Vassalotti pitched 3 scoreless innings (1 hit, no walks, no Ks).

The Dominican Winter League (LIDOM) commenced yesterday. I only noted one Brewer in action (C Brian Navarreto), but of course he went 3-for-4 with a homer and was the player of the game in a 5-2 victory for Toros Del Este.

RHP JC Mejia is also playing in the Dominican Winter League. Thus far, he’s thrown 2 innings of scoreless relief in 2 games for Tigres del Licey, getting credited for one win.

Not so much a winter ball update, but will note:

"This week we have received the visit of former Astros Valencia player Delson Guzmán, who is currently a player in the Milwaukee Brewers organization. A pleasure to receive you in what is your home (Spain) and that you have been able to train with our first team"

Recently-turned-20-year-old RHP Delson Guzman signed in October 2019 and though listed as Dominican-born, was signed out of Spain's baseball programs, where he grew up. He missed nearly a year of action from mid-2021 to mid-2022, but debuted stateside briefly this summer. The site mister-baseball.com, which tracks European players, lists Guzmán as such.

Venezuela's U-23 team lost 1-run games to Columbia and Chinese Taipei, dropping to 2-3 in Group A in the first stage and costing themselves a spot in the Super Round Group.

  • 1B Jesus Chirinos went 9-for-19 with an incredible 7 doubles, 2 home runs and 8 RBIs. His 22 total bases are two times any other player in the 12-team tournament and his 8 RBIs also lead all players (second place has 5).
  • RHP Michele Vassalotti has also been terrific, pitching 5 scoreless innings.
  • Venezuela will play three games for pride against 2-3 Netherlands, 2-3 Cuba and 2-3 Puerto Rico in the "Placement Round Group".

Australia's U-23 team also went 2-3, but did so in Group B, where five teams actually tied with identical records. I'm not sure what tiebreaker was used, but C Alex Hall's team officially took 3rd place in that group and advanced to the Super Round Group.

  • Hall went 4-for-14 in the first stage, with a double and 3 RBIs.
  • Australia will likely need to win 2 of 3 games against 4-1 Japan, 3-2 Columbia and 5-0 Chinese Taipei to qualify for the Bronze Medal game.

In addition to OF Jackson Chourio playing for Aguilas del Zulia, I’ve noted 4 other Brewer minor leaguers on Venezuelan Winter League rosters:

- INF Andruw Monasterio for Caribes de Anzoategui
- C Jason Lopez for Bravos de Margarita
- C Jose Sibrian for Cardenales de Lara
- RHP Arnaldo Hernandez for Tiburones de la Guaira

That is interesting.  Maybe he is going to get an invite to spring training with the MLB team?

He will, undoubtedly, see some action in big league camp (if healthy, knock on wood).  However, a big league invite is improbable and unnecessary honestly.  I suppose it is in the realm of possibility, just not likely.  This is more about the fact he just finished his first full-season campaign and they would like him to take some time to rest this offseason.  Allowing him to play for a month is more of just a reward for his great season (similar to his promotion to Biloxi for a week) since he clearly would love the opportunity to play some winter ball.  It is truly a testament to his attitude and work ethic how he wants to find every opportunity to be on the field and continue to improve.

I know some managers want to see prospects play in an actual game that they are at so they can get a feel for them.
