How have free agent contracts the last two years changed MLB free agency landscape

Posted

Owners such as Cohen in New York, Middleton in Philadelphia, Seidler in San Diego, and the Texas Ranger ownership conglomerate to name a few have changed MLB free agency the past 2 years signing single players to exhorbitant contracts.  These owners have forever changed free agency.  In the long run I think these teams will regret these contracts just wondering if anyone else has any thoughts on the craziness.

Everyone knows they will regret these contracts, even they know it, but that doesn't stop them from handing them out anyway.

Most of the GMS handing out millions like candy probably won't be around for the really bad parts of those contracts, so they just continue feeding their instant gratification in the quest for a world series title.

I have to admit I never looked at it that way before.  So, you are saying that these new owners are most likely short time owners who build up rosters of expensive players to hopefully win the World Series then sell the team near that APEX.  Got to say that is an interesting idea.  That makes a lot of sense.

Yes, it is a possibility, right?  Not the owners, but the GMs.  I'm assuming most owners have a long range plan in place for owning the teams, I'm talking about the GMs who know they probably won't be around as long as it takes for these horrible contracts to expire.

I mean, they all want to win now, and the majority will not be around when those contracts get bad, so why not rob Peter to pay Paul 10 years from now?

It will be interesting to watch these teams the next ten years.  Do you remember the GM Dave Dombrowski?  Teams always looking to win now would hire this guy, he would spend tons of money on salary and trade lots of minor league talent but he always brought home a pennant and sometimes a WS.  If you ask me he left a trail of destruction because those teams were horrible for about 10 years after he left.  But he made a good name for himself doing this.  Thanks for the heads up.
