Tigers call up Maybin; Monroe DFA (Latest: Monroe to Cubs for PTBNL)

Seems like a panic type move to me, but who knows maybe the kid is ready. Monroe's fairly similar to Mench, stats-wise. I would think he'd have decent value. Plus the Tigers have Thames who I thought was playing well. Maybin has only played in 6 games above Single A. Monroe is making over 4.7 million this season.

What I don't get is if they were even considering this move, why not put him in AAA a month ago so he can at least see pitchers that throw breaking balls for strikes? I assume he's just going to be used as a role player, and would have been up in a couple weeks anyway, but it seems like like a lack of planning overall.

Wow - I didnt think Maybin was going to be ready till next year at the earliest. This kid is going to be THE Superstar once he is a every day fixture.

I hope to God we can get Monroe somehow. I wanted him so bad last year when we were dangling Carlos Lee.

He'd be available for the proverbial bag of balls. And he's basically terrible. Last year was his "good" year and he had a .301 OBP. He'll be 31 on opening day next year.

Huh? You know he's 20 years old right? And he's just been called up to play LF and bat 2nd for a team in the middle of the playoff race.

I'd have thought a nearly .390 OBP in two years in the minor leagues would be pretty good. I know his OPS hasn't been superstar level but you're forgetting that he's 20. His SLG is going to go up.

 

Believe me when I tell you the kid has better raw power than Braun. When he figures out how to use it at the big league level he's going to be Griffey-esque.

 

He's a superstar. He's also a really grounded and humble kid. He's a guy fans will love for years. Detroit is lucky to have him.

It takes a lot to convince me that an A/A+ baller is going to be a "superstar" like a Pujols, Manny, A-Rod type. Like I said, he has produced very well, but as a 19 year old in the midwest league his OPS was .843, a bit lower than Fielder's .935 at the same age and league. I thought at the time that Prince had the potential to project to be a great hitter, but there was nothing that even came close to ensuring that. 19 year-old Delmon Young had an OPS of .968 in over a half season at AA. 18 year-old Griffey had a 1.006 OPS at A+.

 

Like I said, Maybin has been a very good player, but he's nowhere near being in uncharted territory.

I was watching the Cubs on WGN this afternoon, and they were talking about how apparently the Cubs like that Monroe can play all 3 OF positions. I guess that could explain the move, but at the same time, couldn't Jacque Jones, Felix Pie, or even Alfonso Soriano when he gets back play all 3 OF positions? I'm not complaining too much, though...I'm in favor of any panic move the Cubs make without thinking twice. Didn't they almost trade for Scott Podsednik a week or two ago?

Yup, but he's making over a million dollars the rest of the way to be a mediocre player, so I'm guessing you didn't have teams foaming at the mouth over him.

I agree -- he's average, and he strikes out a ton. What's funny, though, is that his career numbers (.751 OPS) are only a little bit worse than those of Eric Byrnes (.786 OPS).

Supposedly Monroe is a lefty killer, and that could explain why the Cubs have an interest in him. They have been abysmal against lefties this year.
