RIP Joe Nuxhall

Joe Nuxhall, youngest pitcher in major league baseball history and longtime Reds radio announcer, died Thursday of cancer at Mercy Fairfield Hospital. He was 79.

By all accounts, he was a terrific guy.

 

And think about how different MLB is today vs. during his playing days.

 

Admittedly it was wartime, and most of the major leaguers were in some form of national service, but to think about a guy pitching in the MAJORS today at age 15 is stunning.

I grew up in Cincy listening to Nuxhall and Marty Brennaman doing the Reds broadcast and I really enjoyed listening to Nuxhall. I was sad to hear about his passing today. I remember when I was at Marquette listening to some Reds games late at night as the Reds flagship has a powerful signal and would love to listen to the end of his star of the game postgame show when he would say his tagline of 'This is the old lefthander rounding third and heading for home.'
