Sounds Blanked by RailRiders as Series Evens - Nashville Held to Just Four Hits in 1-0 Loss
RHP Carlos Rodriguez was great for two consecutive 1-2-3 frames in the second and third innings. He was not so great in his first and fourth innings - he lasted all of 3 2/3 IP of 2 H, 4 BB, 1 HB, 3 K work. The fact he needed 74 pitches while only throwing 35 strikes tells you all you really need to know. His strikeouts all came via his four-seamer - touching 93 and 94 mph on two K's above the zone and one K inside belt high. It was a slog, however. The deeper numbers and the peripherals tell you exactly what happened. His return from the IL has been anything but smooth. He continues to search for his stuff amidst the roller coaster that has been reintegrating into the Sounds starting pitching staff. Despite LHP Josh Maciejewski taking the loss (falling to 2-2 as a Sound), Rodriguez still owes him a high five for stranding all three of his bases loaded inherited runners in the fourth inning. Maciejewski struck out his only batter to end that threat. That was also the second time the RailRiders had left the bases juiced with not a single run crossing in the first four frames - both came in Rodriguez's first and last innings of work. This explains Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's 0-for-7 mark with RISP. It's hard to fault Maciejewski for the loss as none of the four hits he suffered in his two innings of work were hit particularly hard - one even completely fractured the bat in two. It was a case of flares and soft bloops. The old baseball dink and doink. Unfortunately, that was all the RailRiders needed in the end.
The game the Sounds gained just one night earlier was gifted right back - the Sounds fell back to 6.5 GB of these same Scranton/Wilkes-Barre foes as they fell to 16-13 in their second half. The sole XBH off the Sounds bats came via C Nick Kahle - with the outfield in he managed to hit a deep fly to the right field warning track for a double. He was obviously stranded. LF Tyler Black struck out twice on six pitches in a 1-for-4 evening at the dish. He did manage to get aboard in the ninth and final inning before 3B Bobby Dalbec lined out weakly to shortstop. A night after I lauded SS Freddy Zamora's increasingly steady veteran-like play, he gave solid defense in the hole and hit a patented ground ball up the middle in a 1-for-3 evening at the dish. With the series knotted 1-1, the Sounds will look to bounce back tomorrow evening.
Final: Pensacola (Marlins) 8, Biloxi 4
Spain Makes History in Shuckers Loss to Blue Wahoos - Spain Tallies Three Outfield Assists Joining Three Others Since 2005
The Shuckers led 4-3 in the middle innings. And, then, well RHP Nick Merkel had his roughest outing in quite some time in a five-run seventh inning. Game. Set. Match. The Pensacola game feed is mirroring early 2024 Keesler Park in Biloxi: it's all behind home plate. It's a tough watch as you can't really tell how a pitcher is throwing. To that tune, RHP Brett Wichrowski labored through 3.0 IP of 4 H, 4 BB, 3 K work. He was pulled at 60 pitches having only thrown 30 strikes. Even from behind home plate it was quite easy to convey: it was pretty ugly and consistently inconsistent. Here in his second season as a Brewer, I can't help but wonder when the light will truly turn on for Wichrowski. As is, at present, what we have is an incredibly talented but incredibly inconsistent starting pitcher. He is far from a finished product.
Three Quick Strikes:
1) The Shuckers led 4-3, but, really they can thank their lucky stars. The right field/catcher battery mates of Garrett Spain and Darrien Miller prevented three more runs from crossing. It was truly something. By the by, with three more Assists tonight, Spain is now officially tied with Trent Grisham (2018) in the Shuckers record books at 11 on his season. The difference here is: Spain has done it in 78 GP whereas Grisham did it in 106. The three Assists tonight were not cheap in any fashion. He grabbed two in the third inning salvaging Wichrowski's bottom line. Then he grabbed this one in the seventh frame helping stop Merkel's bleeding:
Kudos are deserved for C Darrien Miller as he handled every one of these throws cleanly and applied fantastic tags.
2) DH Mike Boeve returned. Yet, DH Mike Boeve exhibited much of the same ineffectiveness at the dish we've seen throughout the majority of 2025. Obviously, he's coming back from a significant injury this past off-season. None the less, Boeve just isn't catching the eye in 2025. This is the baseball god's honest truth. 1-for-5, 1 K. The batting average is down. The OBP is down. The SLG is down. The OPS is down. The strikeouts are up. Is this a mulligan year? I'm going to treat it as such. Kudos for grinding through the physical maladies and working through it in live action.
3) Let's end on a positive note here: RHP Abdiel Mendoza, yet again, had a plus relief outing. It is seriously a trend and the Shuckers pitching staff desperately needs it. 3.0 IP, 1 H, 2 K, 0 R. 40 pitches. 28 strikes. He's absolutely hit his stride as a multi-inning utility knife out of the Shuckers bullpen. He has come light years since his early struggles after a solid debut opener.
Final: Lake County (Guardians) 3, Wisconsin 1
Rattlers Victorious in Return Home - Wisconsin Erases 3-0 Deficit with Late Runs to Win 4-3
The ongoing themes for LHP Sam Garcia and tonight's starter, RHP Jaron DeBerry is small steps in the right direction and a semblance of progress. In tonight's 5 2/3 IP of 5 H, 3 BB, 5 K, 3 ER work we saw just that from DeBerry. As a matter of fact, I'd tend to think his 92 pitches were the most by any Brewer arm since the All Star Break where the vast majority have been pulled in the 70-to-75 range. 51 strikes landed. This was definitely a positive step in the right direction for DeBerry. And, as is almost always the case, the trick now becomes: can he stack similar or better outings in the final month and a half? We shall have to wait and see.

Post-Game Podcast:
Three Quick Strikes:
1) The T-Rats may have lost 3-1, but they'll rue their missed opportunities throughout. 2-for-9 with RISP and 10 LOB. They left the sacks dripping in both the eighth and ninth innings with one out. Their sole run in that span? A bases loaded walk by 1B Blake Burke. Earlier in the game, Burke was robbed of an RBI line drive in the gap when CF Jaison Chourio made a beautiful sliding catch in the right center field gap. He would have made his brother Jackson proud even if it made us Brewers fans moan in disbelief. The come back last night was nice, but with the loss of INF Jadher Areinamo this offense is likely going to continue struggling until promotions and draft assignments roll in post-deadline. Speaking of Jadher: 2-for-5, 1 RBI tonight in his Southern League debut batting in the two spot for the Montgomery Biscuits. You love to see it!
2) Kudos are deserved for the three scoreless bullpen innings shared by RHP Stiven Cruz (1 1/3 IP, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K), LHP Anthony Flores (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K) and RHP Yerlin Rodriguez who gave us his four-leaf clover outing of 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 WP, 0 HB, 1 K. I can't remember the last time Yerlin pitched a truly unblemished inning of work out of the Timber Rattlers bullpen. I may need to grab a Kleenex and share a nostalgic moment with myself.
3) SS Eduardo Garcia continues to be a shining light in what has been an extremely frustrating Timber Rattlers season for the most part. With C Marco Dinges gone for the foreseeable future and with 1B/DH Blake Burke mired in an RBI and XBH slump since the All Star Break, Garcia continues to provide steady play and leadership wherever his playing defensively and wherever he is batting in the batting order. Two more pokes tonight in a 2-for-4 evening. His season as a whole continues to be a breath of fresh air on a team where not many seasons catch your eye in any capacity.
Final: Augusta (Braves) 5, Carolina 2
An evening after the Mudcats opened their road series with a 5-2 win of their own, the GreenJackets came back and took a 5-2 game two. RHP Travis Smith continues to shine in July as he stacks solid outing after solid outing. This is far and away his best month of the 2025 season and I am absolutely here for it. After a 5.0 IP, 4 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 1 ER evening, Smith closes his July with a stupendous 0.55 ERA over five starts. Thats a mere two earned runs over 26.0 IP for the month. 24 K to just 7 BB over that span. A 0.180 BAA with a fantastic 0.88 WHIP. Do you think he is starting to figure things out? I sure do. It is truly night and day for the 22-year-old righty.
Three Quick Strikes:
1) 2B Josh Adamczewski has returned to the Mudcats line up, assumed the lead-off role for the young squad, and has hit the ground running since his return from Arizona. His hitting prowess knows no bounds. Tonight's 2-for-3, 2 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 HR evening atop the line up pushed his season BA to 0.352 and his season OPS back to 1.000. Folks, that's a 1.000 OPS in the Carolina League in just shy of 200 PA's. Do you think he's ready for High-A? At 20 years old, the only thing (and I do mean only thing) that has kept him in Carolina this long is a sequence of absolute freak injuries. Now that he's healthy? It is past time we move him along and take the training wheels off. He has played ten games since finishing his ACL rehab stint. Over that span: 36 AB, 12 H, 3 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 6 BB, 6 K. Tonight's 107 mph rocket was his fourth long ball in 2025:
If you know, you know. I've known since 2024. What's your excuse?
2) A night after touting 1B Eric Bitonti for his all around game and productivity, despite his elevated 2025 K rate, he rewards us all with a 2-for-4, 1 BB, 1 K evening batting clean-up. On the other end of the spectrum, just when we thought 3B Filippo Di Turi may have turned his July around with his recent grand salami, he reverted to an 0-for-4, 3 K evening. Di Turi now has 52 K's over 151 AB's in June and July. This is two seasons in a row where Di Turi has slumped fairly hard in the latter part of the season. I will say once again: there may not be a more important month and a half for a young player in the Brewers system than this sprint to the finish means for Di Turi. Let's keep rooting him on as he looks to find that next level of stamina. He is always available. He has the talent.
3) RF Reece Walling's single in the eighth inning broke a brutal 0-for-38 stretch. Congratulations, Reece! Keep grinding! In the middle of the outfield grass. CF Jose Anderson had a night of highs and lows. He made a handful of very tough plays ranging the alleys. Very impressive plays, might I add - and that's consecutive nights flashing the leather out there. However, he also made a routine fielding error conceding a free base on a slow rolling single that somehow snuck under his glove. Then, he absolutely airmailed a ball into the Augusta dugout when carelessly trying to unleash a cannon from deep CF as all runners tagged on the base paths. He landed back at the Mendoza Line with an 0-for-3, 1 BB, 1 K effort at the dish. Anderson is a mixed bag of raw upside but he needs to polish his rough edges in the season(s) ahead.
With the loss, and with the Fredericksburg loss, the Mudcats maintained a 3.5 G lead in first place atop the Carolina League North division.
Final: DSL Rays 5, DSL Brewers Blue 2
Box Score/Game Log
Picking up Monday's rain postponed game (lightning) in the bottom of the fourth inning trailing 5-1 to open today's tilt is not exactly an ideal way to hit the diamond. None the less, the Brewers and Rays played five innings of 1-0 DSL Brewers Blue (moral) victory.
The real shining light in the Blue's line-up was none other than 1B Joan Gutierrez. In his third season at the Brewers Dominican Academy, batting ninth, Gutierrez managed a 3-for-3, 2 R, 1 BB , 1 2B day of work. One of his runs came via the second Brewers Blue XBH in a double for lead-off RF Carlos Done (1-for-4, 1 RBI, 1 2B). The other run scored off the bat of C Yoneiker Lugo (1-for-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB). All in all, despite leading the hit advantage 7-to-6 and despite earning seven free passes, the DSL Brewers Blue will definitely lament their 1-for-11 mark with RISP. That was clearly the difference in this loss.
RHP Manuel Moreno picked up the slight mess left by the original start of one RHP Josue Toledo (3.0 IP, 7 H, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 WP, 1 HB, 1 Balk, 4 ER), and pounded out five scoreless frames of 0 H, 1 BB, 1 HB, 2 K work. It was Moreno's efforts that gave the DSL Brewers a chance to come back.
Unfortunately, the Blue were only capable of sending the one run across over today's five innings. The game ended when CF Brailyn Antunez (0-for-4, 1 BB, 2 K) grounded out to third base stranding Done at second base. With the loss, the DSL Brewers Blue fell to 20-19 overall. They also have fallen to fourth place overall in the DSL Northwest division.
We will see a full six-game slate of action tomorrow. Both DSL squads will take to work in the Dominican morning. In the evening, RHP Chad Patrick will take the bump for the Sounds as they look to take a 2-1 series lead. LHP Wande Torres will take the bump for Carolina on the road in Augusta. RHP Manuel Rodriguez will return to action for the Timber Rattlers. And, at this time, Biloxi's starting pitchers is our old friend 'TBD'.
As always, thanks for reading and thanks for supporting Brewers Minor League baseball.
