  2. Figgins is actually, statistically very impressive on D. 244 career games in CF - Fielding % of .986 Range factor just over league average Career stolen base rate - 75% I know that SB% is not up to some people's liking, but he swipes a LOT of bags -- avg. of 49/yr. His OBP is pretty solid (career .345), and he is durable. He's not a power guy, but neither is Roberts. The idea of Figgins, obviously, gets me pretty excited -- younger, and cheaper (but also proven at the MLB level)
  3. I don't know if I'm the only one that noticed this (I doubt it), but Graffy had at least a couple heated run-ins with Fielder last year (as in on-field btw innings). I don't know whether or not that plays a role in determining G's fate, but feel like it's interesting. I admit bias too, though. Loretta is a class act, and is the better hitter, for sure. He has proven his durability over the past 4 years, missing time only in 2005 (104 gms). I'd love this chance, certainly over Graffanino.
  4. Ok, gonna go on a limb. I don't want this to be one of those random guys thrown on a page trade idea, but here goes Chone Figgins Juan Rivera for Doug Davis Geoff Jenkins (we would eat some salary, for sure) Corey Koskie ps --- I personally would just be happy with Davis for Figgins
  5. Did anyone else hear Tim Purpura crap his pants when he saw the numbers on that Soriano deal? Savvy move by the Cubbies (maybe, maybe just the coincidental impact of overspending), who have now either priced their divisional rivals out of a slugger, or made them break the bank to land him. Here's another thought. I know there are no rumors on this, but please consider. A lot of talk out of NYY circles is that Matsui should play 1B in 2007. With the game-changing amount of Soriano's deal, I personally do not count the Yankees out of contention, even if they aren't 'rumored'
  6. Not so fast brettac. The Brewers have a much better team than the Giants right now. Where SF is old and has players departing like the next quake is on the way, the Crew is young and improving. Call me an optimist, but I can't see Roberts liking the SF squad even equally to ours at this point. Their ace is headed out the door, Bonds is either gone or playing 87.362873 games next year, and the Dodgers & Padres are actively improving and maintaining their teams this offseason, not to mention the NL Cy Young winner plays for the other team in the division - the young and improving D'Backs I think Sabean would have to really really overpay to make Roberts consider playing for a team that is not going to be that good next year. Roberts has played on winning teams every season in his 8 year career, and I think it's a pretty safe bet that the Giants will not be in that category in 2007. Add in the fact that he's played most recently on the two good teams in that division (LAD & SD), and it just doesn't seem to make a lot of sense for him to jump ship to a sinking one. It'd be like seeing Tomo Ohka sign with the Pirates. It's a possibility, but it just doesn't make sense for the player. I know SF has some $$$ to throw around, but I bet our bigger competition is the Rangers. All that being said, it sounds like we have a dang good shot of landing Roberts. But I am an optimist. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  7. Anderson is on the White Sox, not Rangers. It sounds like the Rangers' desire for Anderson as well, without a clear piece to add on with Danks, might be the snag here. This deal has been talked about for a while now, and seems likely. I just don't see a proven MLB starter going for merely one prospect. I wonder who the Rangers can offer, in addition to Danks, that can net them both Garland & Anderson.
  8. This is exactly why I've been talking up Doug Davis's trade value. He's healthy, durable, and affordable. I am anxiously waiting to see what the Moustache can swing this offseason
  9. I don't know specifically of Beltre's stats, but ESPN has the 2006 Park Factors ranking Dodger Stadium at 10 out of 30 (1.046), while SAFECO is 29th (.881). sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/parkfactor
  10. I referenced those guys in terms of a full lineup. Taveras brings incredible speed, and Biggio will surpass 3,000 hits this season - on his way to the HOF. Ensberg can hit, and the notion that that offense is a joke is just ridiculous! Houston is a big spender, and can easily add a decent RF hitter (Trot Nixon would probably come cheap, for example). Everett's & Ausmus's D clearly compensate for any offensive shortcomings. Having a duo like Berkman & Lee puts the Astros O in another category. It's so important to put together at least two stud big-time run producers. BoSux, Yanks, Cards, Mets, White Sox, and Jays (w/Thomas) all qualify, and all are serious 2007 playoff teams. I know there's more to baseball than two guys, but when those two are as strong of run producers as Lee & Berkman, that's an advantage that clearly only a handful of teams possess
  11. Jenkins certainly is a proven run producer, but plays the OF, where the Crew has a surplus of players, and a nice starting OF if Dave Roberts is signed, which doesn't include Jenks. Additionally, Jenks has what is for us a big contract, and his best years are most likely behind him. I didn't at first consider Beltre's contract. But moving Davis & Jenkins frees up a lot of space. I know I don't have the perfect answer, but after another year of mediocrity with the pieces we have, it's time to mix things up and take some risks.
  12. I hate both of those prospects, but I'll take Astros over Cubs 1,000,000 times out of 10!
  13. Wow, nice creative work UWRyan. The only possible flaw I can find is that the White Sox clearly come out far ahead in terms of 2007 players. I like the combination you've worked out here, man. All players have been made "available", even though I don't know the 3B prospect from the White Sox. I agree that this trade totally kicks butt for the Crew. Dumping Jenks's salary, and moving Davis in return for a starter as solid & proven as Vasquez makes me drool
  14. I like that, too, AJ. Here's where I really think Davis's trade value comes into play. Being able to send Davis, Koskie, & Jenkins/Clark/Mench is almost certain to land Beltre. Even though Beltre isn't the OBP machine the lineup so desperately needs, his O combined with steady D (and the fact that he's 28 on Opening Day 2007) makes up for any lack in OBP. Even if he doesn't hit for a high BA, Beltre still drives in runs (.240 avg & 80 RBI in 2003, 87 RBI in 2005, & 89 in 2006). He's a proven run producer just into his MLB prime, and his D is, at worst, a neutral factor
  15. Sorry guys, I've always loved the nickname for the Astros, I didn't even look at it as vulgar. I just really hate the Crawford Boxes. I didn't recognize being out of line, sorry! p.s. -- the reason I didn't hesitate is that when i've typed things in line with these before, they were automatically cartoon-swear-ized. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/embarassed.gif
  16. I've heard this too, and not just from ESPN. The lineup that goes from Lance Berkman (career OBP = .416, OPS = .983) to Carlos Lee (avg. 115 RBI past two seasons) makes me crap my pants. Add in Biggio, Ensberg, and Taveras, and suddenly the Astros don't struggle to score runs, they thrive upon doing so. And those damn Crawford Boxes!!! WHY?!?! EDIT: Yeah, that word is not allowed. -PF
  17. The speculation to which I referred is based upon the new expensive market. What was once the second-highest contract in MLB is now only on a par with what Carlos Lee and Alfonso Soriano will receive. Here's what Manny is owed: 2007: $18 mil 2008: $20 mil 2009: Club option ($20 mil) 2010: Club option ($20 mil) While that's still pricey, Ramirez is definitely a superior player, especially since both aforementioned FAs play D about on par with Manny. Both Lee's and Soriano's career OPS is .835. Manny's career OPS ---- 1.011. His eye at the plate is phenomenal. Starting with his first full season in 1995, he has averaged 84 BBs per season. Manny certainly strikes out more than Lee, but his career BA is .314 to Lee's .286. The only area in which Manny trails the two FAs is that he's 35 on Opening Day 2007, to Lee's 30 & Soriano's 31. If Manny's game were speed, that would be critical. Since he's a power guy, it's much much less important. I agree that Manny always creates drama, be it "Trade me!" or disappearing into the Green Monster between & during innings. However, the talk of the industry is now not merely that he's a candidate for trade, but that his contract is no longer the roadblock it has been. It's additionally very important to keep in mind that the BoSux would most likely be willing to eat a portion of Manny's money to facilitate a trade.
  18. I guess this comes down to difference in opinion. I don't like the addition, especially if it had to be at the expense of Hardy. I agree that the possibility of Wells departing will make Toronto very reluctant to deal Rios. I don't think your idea of Davis's trade value is accurate, which is again my own opinion. I'm basing that on what Lyle Overbay returned, primarily, since I was shocked we got so much. Additionally basing it on the over-inflated FA market, and general difficulty in finding a dependable LH starter. I think the Brewers are fortunate to have 2 such pitchers, so dealing one is not handcuffing the rotation's diversity/balance. Toronto feels it can plausibly win the AL East in 2007, so the Wells situation looks to play out much like Carlos Lee's in 2006 (team performance-based). Having Rios as an affordable insurance policy is something I wouldn't give up as Toronto.
  19. shootkick, the speculation (since he has again requested a trade, and one early in the offseason) is that the BoSux will trade Manny. That said, the regulars would be Drew, Crisp, and Pena. Unless Nixon re-signs for minimal $$$, the Sux will let him walk. It doesn't seem like Crisp would be available, but you never know. If they move Manny, they'd get a huge return, and Crisp offers a nice element of speed to the team - at an affordable price. This is the team that is going to commit appx. $20 mil/yr to Matsuzaka, so bargains already on their roster would be unlikely to get shipped off.
  20. Doug Davis alone could net at LEAST Rios. JJ Hardy is so disrespected on this forum, it's ridiculous. I understand people are frustrated with his injuries, but the second half of 2005 truly showed us what Hardy can do. He got injured this year by running into a beast at the plate, and needs to be respected for giving up his body for the win, the team, and the fans. Hardy will be back in 2006, and I personally can't wait to see him make his critics eat crow. Melvin clearly has 100% confidence in him, as Hall will be playing LF, not SS. Rios is just another guy who strikes out too frequently, and would not improve our offense that much. His BB-K ratio is horrendous, and his career base-stealing % is at 71. The threads on Juan Pierre point out just how much negative impact getting caught stealing has. Rios has good physical ability, including a solid OF arm. However, his production on the field is just not the impact the Brewers need. We already have enough guys that need to drastically reduce their Ks and increase their BBs. We don't need another.
  21. Why is it that some people just find the worst for the Crew? If Melvin & co went out this offseason and signed Lee or Soriano or Drew, the same people would be complaining next offseason about having overpaid and now we can't get Vernon Wells or Jake Westbrook or Adam Dunn or Andruw Jones or Freddy Garcia. The young guys we have are the nucleus to which the Brewers have committed. We can't afford to keep them, and try to create a new core via free agency. What we can do is spend wisely this offseason (ie Roberts), and let Melvin make more great trades to bring in pitching. I can't stomach Brewer fans finally getting what is needed, and then complaining how it isn't good or fast enough. Expanding our market takes time, and if you look at the progress made since regime change, it has happened pretty quickly. No matter who they add for 2007, the Brewers are still at least a year away from seriously contending. Could we make a playoff push? Certainly, but we don't have a combo like Pujols-Edmonds-Rolen or Beltran-Delgado-Wright just yet. The core of the team has finally experienced, first-hand, just how tough the MLB is. What deal is it that makes you not trust Melvin & co.'s talent assesment? I just don't understand! You can rip the Lee trade all day long, but it was the right move. The ticket increase is going to facilitate bringing a big stud, and I can't wait to hear what these pessimists have to say when they see how wise we were to avoid the carnage of this year's FA market
  22. You're my boy, TeamCanada!! You're my boy! Yeah, the market is jaw-dropping, eye-popping, and SUPERSEXY
  23. The lack of rumors is no fault of Melvin's. We do hear rumors -- Roberts, Lopez (Bal), Pierre -- but what does Melvin have to work with? You guys try trading our excess of declining OFs and see what you can get! Personally, I'm glad we're not getting in for the sake of "competing" this offseason. The FA crop is terrible, and guys are making money that's just insane - not at all in line with talent or production, merely the market -- which sucks! The FA market after next season is bonkers. Mlbtraderumors.com gives a look: www.mlbtraderumors.com/20...ree_a.html Roberts fits the main position player need, and the solid pitchers are out of our price range. Trading will be how the pitching help is brought in, and we'll have to wait for the winter meetings for the bulk of those to go down. Spending intelligently, and saving money this offseason will have us salivating next offseason.
  24. Look, I don't want to dump Davis for the sake of dumping Davis. I really feel that moving him is beneficial to the team. With pitching, and especially LHPing at a premium, the Brewers can offer a relatively inexpensive (enhancing his value even more) LHP who has proven his durability. If there is nothing out there in terms of an OF or other kind of big-ish bat, let's keep Davis. I have no illusions that Davis will bring us the kind of bat that so many on this site beg for. However, I do think that Davis is worth a nice, solid & dependable bat to iron out some of the wrinkles of the 2007 Brewers. If we can move Mench & Clark & Jenks for some reliable SPs, then the Davis move becomes super nice. Obviously I am not endorsing a Doug Davis cut-and-run policy; I just feel that he's a great puzzle piece to establish the Brewers of the future -- the Playoff push years
  25. I know a lot of people here don't like the Roberts idea, bc of Gwynn Jr. This is precisely why I like the deal. Gwynn Jr is by no means ready to play MLB everday. He is, however, a strong defender, bunter, and speed burner. He would figure very well coming off the Brewers' bench in both 2007 & 2008. Sign Roberts to his 3 years, and make sure there's a relatively affordable ($1 mil or less) buyout on the 3d year. I really don't see how a 34 year old speed (not power) player could argue against that provision. It would be fair for the Crew and the Roberts. I really like him at 3/15, but ONLY with a 3d year buyout provision. If Gwynn Jr is ready at that time, we've still got him. And in the meantime, he makes for a pretty strong backup OF and pinchruner/bench player!
