  1. Klements, I obviously agree with you, and in this instance, critics be darned (sometimes not swearing is just so uncool). I don't call him Reggie White, but the potential deal hangs on the element of whether or not he wants to come to WI (or if God tells him to.... sorry Reggie, couldn't resist - We Miss You!!) This would not at all be that same move. What it would be, and what it shares in common with the NFL signing is that it would be a proven, veteran star player recognizing that, with the young talent already in place, his presence can put the team over the proverbial hump of playoff success. I'll gladly stand up to any criticism of that Edit: Cooprules should get a gold star (preschool? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ) for his nice work on the link to the CNNSI story on Schmidt. It's details like that which make BF.net the best place to be on the internet!
  2. yfinn, I think they separate the deals, unless you're talking about a bonafide starter (ie Freddy Garcia) or a proven position player (ie Rowand). Otherwise, it sounds like the Crew has suprisingly become a player in the Jason Schmidt race, which would be much preferable, IMO. Let's not forget one factor that reduces Garcia's trade value for the Brewers --- He's a FA after 2007, and already making $10 mil/year. It's nice to trade guys, to be sure, but it's also nice to have someone around for not just a 1/2 season stop. I'd take Lieber over Garcia for that reason as well -- at worst, Lieber's a RH Doug Davis (w/o all those BBs), and at best he's a solid 3, 4, or 5 guy who could probably be re-signed to a one or two year deal next offseason at roughly $6 mil per year
  3. WOW That's probably the most interesting development of this offseason for the Crew. The Estrada/Vargas/Aquino deal was nice and all, but WOW. I've been saying that the "$10 million puzzle piece" is much more likely to be a pitcher, and this is one guy that I would not even blink at handing a 3/4 year, $35-45 mil contract. Sheets AND Schmidt? Two #1 starters? I think my brain just exploded. I know this isn't even close to being a deal, or even a done deal. But it does sound like it's coming down to LAD, Sea, and US. That's awesome -- this is no Reggie White, but it would be a big step in the right direction
  4. As a fan of the Yankees, I love it. As a fan of the Brewers, I love it. I know Pettite's wife is none too keen of Andy returning to the Yanks, but we'll see if her voice can be heard over all the "CHA-CHING!"s he's gonna be yelling
  5. GenoSeligPrieb - I think the "serious upgrade in our 3-6 hitters" is going to come from simply our own young players improving. I most certainly believe the upgrade via trade will come in our Pitching Rotation. Fielder, Hall, and Hart all will be marked improvements on our offense in 2007. Take Fielder, for example. While he certainly tapered off, batting .221 in August & .239 in Sept., he also went from averaging 9 BBs/month from April to July to 13BBs/mo. the rest of the way. I know that doesn't seem huge, but plate discipline is, IMO, the single greatest element of a slugger going from good to great. Hall, too, went through a similar transformation. Hovering around 7-8 BBs/mo. through July, Hall drew 19 BBs in August & 16 BBs in Sept. While neither sounds like a career-altering shift, consider this: Fielder 2006 BBs: 59 Hall 2006 BBs: 63 A full season for Fielder @ 13 BBs/mo: 78 BBs A full season for Hall @ 17 BBs/mo: 102 BBs I know it's not entirely fair or accurate to take a good stretch and then project that for a full season, but I think for example's sake, this works. This would improve each player's OBP & OPS significantly, and this is the area (BBs) where I see both Fielder & Hall improving in 2007, which will be very impactful & valuable
  6. I like it Splitter. I also agree that it's important to keep in mind that the 'bad' contracts being discussed are not long term (including Lieber) From Lieber's $7.5 mil '07 salary, I think it's in our interest to swing Mench on that one, since we can then feasibly demand that Philly eat some of that number. Let's say Mench gets $2.5 mil in arbitration. I think it's reasonable to ask that we pay $5 mil for Lieber in '07, leaving the Phils with a $5 mil bill for '07. Jenkins, on the other hand, should carry a higher value. I obviously think he should be able to land Kris Benson from the O's (perhaps with another smallish piece) - see the thread. Likewise, it may take a bit more than merely Mench to land Lieber, but in both cases, worthy investments for the Crew. To stay on topic, Lieber is a durable RHP. While he won't pop the radar gun or be a #1 guy, he's 126-115 in his 12-year MLB career. He's exactly the kind of experienced pitcher the rotation could use
  7. Yeah, thumper, I agree (both on Jenks's value and the WBC analysis). Glad I'm not the only one who thinks Jenks could basically land Benson on his own. Just because I can be a cynic on trades, I add Graffanino to be sure the deal gets done Maybe we could get a pen arm in addition (?)
  8. Mothership - I agree that it'd be a stretch to hope for Benson as a #2 kind of guy. In my mind, adding him would be for the #4 or 5 role, with the other role being filled, most likely, by Vargas. We learned last year that you can never have enough SPing, and having Villanueva as a long reliever/spot starter/injury fill-in would be a great luxury. I'd love to just trust CV as a starter for the full 2007 season, but I know it's a risk to trust that a rookie can both stay healthy for a full season and produce at a competitive level (such as his very small experience in 2006)
  9. More fuel to the fire (this from Ken Rosenthal) -
  10. Any opinion on the value of the trade I proposed? I am leery to think, however fair I think it sounds, that a deal could go down without us giving up a pitching prospect. I for one am worried about trading away any more of our young arms. I know we have depth, but we're now one trade away from losing another top LHP prospect, and falling to the ranks of 'average' young pitching depth.
  11. Ok, more to add - according to his orioles.com Player Bio: I know, especially from The Doug Davis Experience, that close losses are the pitcher's fault almost as often as the Offense's, but thought it was an interesting tidbit to add. If you move 3 of those 7 games to the win column - as it seems fair to not take 4 - that gives Benson a 14-9 record in 2006, as opposed to his 11-12. That's quite a difference
  12. From FoxSports' Ben Maller: Benson is a Superior, WI native, born there in 1974. Since breaking into MLB in 1999, he has averaged 172 IP. His career record is 68-73, but since being traded from Pit. in mid-2004, it's 25-24 (43-49 in Pit.). Benson over the last three seasons (averages): IP = 185 2/3 ERA = 4.42 ERA+ = 97 WHIP = 1.326 BBs = 56 I know the O's are trying to sign Luis Gonzalez, but if they miss on him and one or two others, I'd bet Jenkins would carry significant value. Perhaps (probably) not enough alone to net Benson, but I'd definitely be willing to add on another player to make it work (Graffanino?). Does anyone think it would really take much more than that? I hope I'm not being biased in feeling like it wouldn't take a pitching prospect Benson's contract info: 2007 - $7.5 mil 2008 - $7.5 mil club option ($500K buyout)
  13. It makes me want to cry that this topic is even being seriously discussed. This is not only the worst human being in sports, this is just a plain, outright horrible person. Not only is this not going to happen, there's a 0% chance this happens. Please lock this thread! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
  14. It's important to note that many teams are "working to sign" FAs like Lofton right now. Melvin has mentioned being in discussion with his agent, and it seems the Cubs desire to throw offers at as many FAs as possible, since they have not had a contingency plan for life without Prior & Wood for years now. Julio Lugo is also mentioned constantly for the Cubs' CF vacancy, then eventually going back to SS when Cubs prospect Felix Pie is ready to play CF in the MLB. Lugo has played for Pinella before, and Lou is supposedly sweet on Julio. We'll see what happens. I for one, would love to see the Crew land K-Lo for a 2-year deal. I believe that 2 years & $12-14 mil would land him, and I hope it's with us. He's still a darn good ballplayer, and would buy us a year or two to figure out what we can do in CF, for the long-term
  15. End - thanks for clarifying http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif add-on -- perhaps it's just me, but a difference of .020 in OPS seems small, not pickin' a fight though. So the theory is that, since Chavez has yet to hit his theoretically best years, that gap in OPS is only going to get greater, esp. as Huff declines (?)
  16. Right, end. My point is in response to your Your criticism is (please clarify if this is not what you meant) that, since Huff is older, he will have better numbers over a 5 year period that assumedly included years in which Chavez was not at peak performance. I included 2000 & 2001 to show that, although younger, Chavez was already at prime performance
  17. Not to disagree with you for the sake of disagreeing, end (and not that I particularly care about Huff) - 2002 (the first year in Rosenthal's 5-year window) was Chavez's third full time season (4th overall) in MLB. Additionally, 2000 & 2001 yielded outstanding offensive production from Chavez, so I don't think Rosenthal is nit-picking. Chavez hit 2000 - .277/.355/.495/.850 (89 runs, 26 HRs, 86 RBI) 2001 - .288/.338/.540/.878 (91 runs, 32 HRs, 114 RBI) I think, in this instance, Rosenthal is being very fair
  18. You mean like Jenkins? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  19. I agree. If Jennings is legitimately available, Jenks + Clark is a much, much better offer than Jones. Especially given that the Rockies have been reported as interested in Clark to fill their CF role. A pitching rotation of Sheets, Cap, Jennings, Bush, and Vargas (CV & YoGa waiting in the wings) gets me all hot & bothered, I must say!
  20. I know this isn't relevant directly to the Crew, but the Cubs possibly adding Jennings doesn't exactly help us. I know the assessment of him on this site is about 50-50, but he could significantly help the Cubs (who could certainly afford to re-sign him) msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6226820 Good updates from Rosenthal across the league
  21. glad to know I'm not the only one that thinks those numbers are straight garbage! You'd do better merely speculating, and I can't put any stock in those numbers. Is there a formula behind this? I seriously can't stop thinking how poor those projections are (the 2006 numbers prove the infrequency of accurate projections - they got Fielder's about right, so I'm sure that makes them look better)
  22. I'm late to the thread, but here goes: I don't think players are necessarily being stockpiled to move. What I love about Melvin & Co. is that we all learned in 2006 that there is always a possibility, however small, that many, or even all of your key players can be lost to injury. If players are being compiled to swing a deal, cool. I have total trust in Melvin & Co. I would be surprised if this is the case, since the players we're adding are not eligible for free agency for years. This is such a simple, yet brilliant strategy. Our star players, our "big bat"s that are constantly discussed, are already here -- Prince, Bill, Braun, Rickie. We, as fans, just have to realize that we need to be patient. I know this is frustrating to some, but this strategy is what the Brewers have to follow in order to be continually competitive. We are entering the 3d year of new ownership, and a true commitment to building a consistent winner. A good, strong house is not built in one day. Although it may be harder work to do a job right, the rewards far outweigh the relatively miniscule patience involved for us. I know many will argue "I've been waiting my whole life for a winner! I'm tired of waiting!" etc, etc. (see the thread 'Does this team owe you a winner?') Well, we have been waiting. Now, the first step is here -- ownership with a true plan for winning. We're in the second phase now, with our well-drafted talent finally ready to go (with MUCH more help on the way - mostly pitching). Relax, everyone, the sky is not falling!
  23. Pogo, I don't suggest we trade both. My suggestion is either/or. I agree it's foolish to give up both those guys for one player, no matter how good he is
  24. diomedeh2, first off, were there really two other people who took diomedeh & diomedeh1? Secondly, you rock. Strawboss -- I don't like what that does to our pitching depth either, but in my lifetime (vol. 1) the Brewers have not had a hitter like Cabrera He hits for an awesome BA He Slugs the @#%$ outta the ball He drives in runs, he scores runs He draws BBs He draws way more BBs than he Ks AND he can play 3B or LF He's like Hall except with plate discipline. Mmmmmmm, plaaaaayyyyte discipline. *Homer Simpson drooling noise* p.s. -- BillyHallfan: I am also a huge Hall fan, and I think trading him is nonsense. Except in this case. This is one trade in which I think dealing Hall actually makes sense, even though I hate to admit it. If I have my druthers, whatever those are, I'd do Braun instead. But if FLA would prefer Hall over Braun, I'll fire off another Simpsons quote with "Okiley-dokiley"
