  1. Chris Dickerson... " The gap between Nieves and Kottaras' defense is far greater than the gap between their offensive production." This is the major question at hand in this case. Unfortunately since both are bad at one and horrible at the other, there is no satisfying option. Kottaras has the worst arm from a catcher that I've seen in Brewer history next to Johnny Estrada and perhaps a 1985 Ted Simmons, and it's maddening to see singles and walks turned into almost automatic doubles. That said, has Nieves gotten a hit since opening day? This is why I'm almost more worried about catcher than shortstop or center field. If LuCroy goes down again for an extended period- or if he falters- there will be some major issues.
  2. How can you be against this? I would guess that the Brewers secured some kind of injury insurance on the back end of the deal. At any rate, outside of injury, I don't see any risk of Braun significantly declining. Even in the unlikely occurrence that he loses his swing, I'll start worrying about things in about 4 years. Now let's hope that Sal Bando, Jr. doesn't let him walk in 2021 so he can get his ring with the Tokyo team or something.
  3. I think you just described the vast majority of closers in baseball. There are very few guys who are very good from year-to-year. That's not to say we shouldn't worry about Axford a bit (especially with his minor league history), but it isn't like what we've seen through 6 innings this year is normal for Axford, either. There are a lot of things out of whack with his numbers so far (less first pitch strikes, less swinging strikes, more pitches in the zone in hitter's counts, more contact made by opponents, etc.), but most of it goes back to fastball location. If he can get the ball down regularly again, he'll be fine. I wouldn't worry about him becoming "the next Turnbow." Turnbow had control problems, too, but they were mostly psychological towards the end. Axford's are more mechanical. That's a lot easier to remedy. True, but it is odd that the Brewers haven't really had an in house closer for more than 2 years in ages (since Mike Fetters I forgot about him). It's been a big time revolving door, but from memory, the Brewers have had good success with guys stepping in after the pre-season favorite for closer flamed out early in the season. I'd bet that their closers have well outperformed the MLB average during this time with guys like Doug Henry, Doug Jones, Kolb, Turnbow, Torres, Axford and the like coming from no where to pitch lights out (only to flame out as quickly as they came onto the scene).
  4. Brandon Wood is pure garbage. Not even mentioning the .952 career fielding percentage at shortstop, at the plate, he makes Betancourt look like ARod in his prime. I'd rather call up whoever is playing short in Appleton at this point than relying on Wood for anything. Alex Gordon has Phil Nevin written all over him. Not a bad thing, but no where near the hype either.
  5. No to Canning. I don't want any Chicago interests owning the Brewers after what happened with the Braves. Hopefully Attanasio is well-entrenched here and happy with the new stadium and attendance. I'm assuming that the Dodger franchise is drowning in debt as well.
  6. Because one 2-3 game hot streak at the plate, or multi-error game could change everything dramatically in this case, I'm not going to get into the stats debate.... but from what I've seen, Betancourt reminds me of an aging Shawon Dunston. In the field generally makes the routine play with a strong arm.. probably a little below average due to limited range. At the plate, will never walk, but doesn't strike out much either, with a little pop. Below average hitter in general, but probably about average for a shortstop.
  7. My guess is that's the case with all pro games, though I get your point. From watching games on TV, it looked like there were tons of 'attendees' dressed as an empty seat. They were probably home watching (something else) on TV.
  8. It certainly was during the 70's and 80's, and even for a brief time at the turn of the century. Obviously the downfall started when Kohl (though he deserves credit for saving the team along with the Pettit's) ran Don Nelson out of town. Letting George Karl ascend to dictator status pretty much sealed things. I still rate the Anthony Mason trade as one of the worst blunders in Wisconsin sports history.
  9. I'm not ready to get the pitchforks out yet with Axford, especially considering that Saito is injured. I want no part of Hawkins closing games. Just ask Cub or Twins fans how that works. I'll go with Saito at this point, but as I said- based on past Brewers history, look for a dark-horse to emerge (Mitre has quietly been putting up nice numbers).
  10. Here you go, getting me to use an avatar is quite an accomplishment. Thanks for the creativity! I will try to do it justice with a few Dickerson rants a month.
  11. I'd be a little interested in bringing Hall back, but I don't see it happening. His defense would probably be a slight upgrade, but I really don't want to see him up there striking out every 3 something plate appearances. One thing I like about Betancourt is that he hardly ever strikes out- without hitting a ton of weak grounders either.
  12. The shelf life for a successful Brewers closer is usually .5-1.5 seasons before Plan B takes over and pitches lights out only to falter or be traded during/after the next season. It's been this way basically since Plesac imploded in '91. I'm starting to worry to the point where I'm wondering who plan B will be this season.
  13. Deep down, I do have some man-love for Dickerson just waiting to come out.... I still have to get your avatar up and running. Thanks again for that.
  14. I saw Yuni make a pretty solid play tonight ranging to his left with a strong throw. I really don't think he's that bad, certainly no worse than Escobar was last season. Sure he's hitting south of the Mendoza line right now, but I think that will change, he's been putting the bat on the ball, and hitting a lot of at 'em balls pretty hard. All that said, Felipe Lopez, who could have been had on a minor league deal, is knocking the crap out of the ball for the Rays and has been playing a passable short. He was one option that I wish that Melvin had looked into as an alternative to Counsell.
  15. Yuni just made a nice play, but that was TWIB material. Who was running to first though, Eric Munson? Even I could have gotten out of the box quck enough to at least been on the screen when the 1B caught the ball.
  16. Like Chris Dickerson! I'd take Dickerson in a heartbeat at the MLB minimum over McLouth even if the Brewers only had to pay a small fraction of the contract.
  17. I guess I'm not seeing how any of the options above would be an upgrade over Betencourt. I have a lot of friends who are Twins fans, and they are all in concurrence that Punto is pure garbage, apparently he was Gardenhire's pet a la Jason Kendall and Yost... check his sponsor on Baseball-reference for confirmation. He does nothing particularly well, including defense at short, going further he is an atrocious hitter (Yuni has probably hit more balls hard in two weeks than Punto would in two months). What would Punto bring to the table that Counsell doesn't?
  18. Jack Wilson absolutely killed the Brewers.... 10 years ago or so. I wouldn't be too upset if they traded for him, but does he really do anything that Counsell can't at this point? My guess is that a 'bigger name' guy will be brought in if the Brewers are in contention and Yuni is tanking.
  19. McLouth is horrible, not even mentioning his salary. There are better one year wonders out there to pursue.
  20. I'm still leaning slightly to Yuni's side on this one, but I got a kick out of this statement.. "I just don't get all the "there's no one better so stop complaining" stuff from the Betencourt defenders." It brought me back to the good old days of the Suppan arguments. I wonder if the same people who hated Soup hate Yuni. It would be interesting to go back into the threads and look. For some reason, though I detested Soup, I feel that Yuni is doing much less damage to the team so far.
  21. In my experience Packers/Cubs fans have generally been old fogies who were around pre-Milwaukee Braves.
  22. I agree, I dislike the incessant music ('walk up' music- what is this the WWF?), in between promo 'games', and yes, even the sausage race. How I long for the days of Bob Betts when Frank Charles' organ music was reserved for between innings and pitching changes. An occasional 'Charge' was fine as well, I used to like the guys who brought their own bugles to the game. Even later, simple things like the attendance game, 'Baseball Trivia' and the 'what year did this song come out game' were cool as well. Ads were played on the scoreboard, but could be easily ignored due to the poor resolution of the scoreboard and poor sound system of County Stadium. Things started to turn in the late 80's early 90's. Now there is just too much fluff for my tastes. Sometimes I feel like I'm at a Madison Mallards game or something.
  23. I'm old school, so don't have an avatar. I thought that Dickerson's poor performance was relevant here because Gomez was brought up. When Dickerson was traded, many here were whining and complaining that he was an above average 4th outfielder, and some even argued an adequate starter. I will agree that the leash for Gomez should be getting shorter by the day, especially with Morgan in the fold. I will agree to stop dumping on Dickerson when people admit that he flat out sucks and/or that Morgan was a huge upgrade.
  24. I think he's done better than expected at short, he seems to make all the routine plays just fine. He's no great shakes, but he could morph into Ozzie Smith v2.0 and there would still be haters. Offensively he needs to improve some, but I'm willing to give him some time. At any rate, at least he's been putting the bat on the ball and basically performing up to what Escobar and/or Counsell have been doing over the past year plus.
  25. It's not.... Chris Dickerson, who was a lot of people's season saver for Gomez, ironically is hitting in the 2 hole.... for the International League's Scranton Red Barons, with an OPS of .505. I'm still waiting for that first dinger from him, no extra base hits either. Yes, I know, small sample, and he's probably still playing through that injury from last season. I'm sure that he's playing tremendous defense though.
