  1. First of all, welcome to the board. "Forgive me if I'm unnecessarily bumping a dead topic (newbie here!) but I never cared for Lopez. My husband seems to like him for some reason, but I'm not a big fan of guys who don't hustle and even less of a fan of guys who can't be good teammates. Seems like Lopez fails at both. That is definitely a concern based on his reputation, but I never really saw that as an issue when he was here a few years ago. Though I wasn't privy to the goings on in the locker room, he seemed to fit on the team just fine.
  2. Thank god that bullet was dodged. Pavano only pitches well in contract years, and I don't think it's a coincidence. Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
  3. With my Brewers blinders on, Gomez is in my view the best defensive CF in the game today. I haven't seen every inning of every game, but can recall only one (for sure) or two balls hit over his head all year. If the ballpark will hold it, he's almost always going to run it down, the guy is a regular gazelle out there. I'm not sure if it's due to the coaching, but another thing I've noticed is that he seems to always be in perfect position. Frankly, I think that the reason that people get so down on him is that he is so 'toolsy' he could be a star player if only he could do something offensively.
  4. Well, in my opinion, he's better out there then Cammy was. Based on how highly regarded Cammy's defense was here, that may make Cargo the best defensive centerfielder that ever played.
  5. Mergers/acquisitions/takeovers are basically never a good thing for consumers. Southwest is 'low fare' if you want to fly at an odd time and book months ahead of time (to get the 'advertised' prices). Otherwise, I've never found them any cheaper than the other airlines. It will be interesting to see if they start cutting destinations as Frontier has been doing. I wonder if they will try to consolidate things toward Midway where they have made significant investments. In my view, this is a bad thing for those who fly out of Milwaukee, just as the Frontier acquisition was.
  6. Sveum isn't going anywhere. He's outlasted two regimes already, and I don't think that this brief funk will cause his ouster. By the way, those 90's teams were pretty stocked offensively. Especially when Seitzer, Vaughn and Jaha were there. Too bad that Eldred got hurt and Ricky Bones was the ace (and I use that term loosely) of the pitching staff for a few years.
  7. As evidenced by his work in KC, Yost is a good manager. My main issue with him here was that he couldn't handle the bullpen to save his life. As for Macha, I'd be shocked if he ever gets a MLB managerial job again. He's OK as far as his decision making goes, but his people skills are lacking in a big way. Obviously, the jury is still out on Roenicke, hopefully he can get the ship righted.
  8. Way too early to freak out about things, especially to the point of pining for Macha. As for the 'running game', as it was said above, you can't steal first. The offense has been absolutely atrocious. Does Bud Norris own these guys that much that he can mess them up for over a week? It's like he's the Soup for this decade or something. Hopefully they don't give him $40 some million when he hits free agency.
  9. My prediction.... Yuni breaks up the game with two outs in the 8th. He will be scorned here for doing so. Poor guy can't do anything right.
  10. I don't think that's enough. Let's kick in LaTroy Hawkins as well.
  11. Sometimes, you have to bunt when you have been averaging about 1 run scored per game for nearly a week.
  12. Good god, people are blaming Roenecke for this? In little league, you are taught how to bunt without getting your fingers pinched.
  13. That game could have went 15 innings and the Brewers probably wouldn't have scored unless someone hit a solo jack, so the errors were pretty moot. I will grant that the defense has been horrendous since last weekend and it's definitely hurting the team, but not as much as the total offensive dissipation has. Could poor defensive play put the team between the eight ball, deflate the spirits and possibly even carry over to offense? Sure, but the major problem in my eyes is that this team looks exactly like last year in that they will likely not score unless someone hits a home run. They'll have some big offensive games and score a lot of runs when everything is clicking (thus making the team stats look better than they actually are). I'm not saying the defense isn't an issue, but the offense is at least twice the problem right now.
  14. The defense was mostly brutal last season as well, and Escobar played a big role in that.
  15. As I've said before, I think defense is overrated here. I will grant you that the defense has been atrocious as of late, but it hasn't really mattered because you aren't going to win any games if you can't score any runs. The offense is the bigger issue here. If these guys were losing a bunch of 4-3 games with all the errors, it would be one thing, but they've scored 6 runs in 5 games. Pathetic, but I feared it was coming once Braun and Fielder cooled off a bit.
  16. How do you know Melvin isn't interested? He made no effort to re-sign Lopez last year and made no effort to sign him this off-season even though he could have been had for a song and a NRI. Lopez didn't sign with Tampa until very late in the game.
  17. I don't want to make this a political epidemic, but DWI is an epidemic in this society. Just check the news, almost every day you either have a death attributable to it or someone getting arrested for their gazillionth time. I think we need to start making the penalties (legal and other) more severe. I would guess that the McDowell incident (deplorable if true) has gotten 10 times the coverage the Lowe arrest received.
  18. Hanson better not drill him again today. It was about this time last year, wasn't it?
  19. Sleep disorders are a huge cash cow for the medical machine these days. Most hospitals have a center devoted to them, so I think that they're legit. I've known a lot of people who go in overnight for 'sleep studies' and such. I had insomnia once, and Ambien knocked that out of me after a week or so.
  20. Exactly. Lopez is the picture of versatility. Why would they keep Almonte around as a back-up OF just because he can 'play the infield' in an emergency. I'd much rather get Lopez who can play the three tough infield positions and could 'play the outfield' as well in an emergency. I don't remember any issues regarding hustle or anything else during Felipe's last stint here. Frankly, he was one of the few bright spots on the team during that collapse. Let's see if Rickie can put a call into him and get him in the fold.
  21. I'm guilty of the 'Betencourt' thing sometimes as well, but I'm getting better the more that I post in 'the thread'.... At any rate, I agree that Gallardo is a 'bigger issue' than Yuni, he's been hurting the team more. If Estrada pitches well again today, I think there's going to be a really tough decision to make.
  22. This sucks. There is a reason for the nickname 'Southworst'. AirTran was always pretty dependable for a good price. Look for diminished services and higher prices overall.
  23. I'm guessing that you are right. The 'innocent until proven guilty' card will be played. I think that MLB should institute a mandatory suspension for anyone found guilty of DWI, though I'm sure it would be a nightmare with the players union and the deep pockets of the players which get them the best DWI defense lawyers that money can buy.
  24. I think that you need to compare this year and last year to 2009. There are some major differences when you do that, in both pitch mix and results. Most notably, it looks like he is less efective changing speeds, and he is also throwing a ton of sliders, which I don't think is a good pitch for him.
  25. This is more than a bad 6 game stretch though. Outside of a handful of games, Gallardo is been pretty much brutal since last summer. Velocity is down a tad, walks are about the same and strikeouts are way down. My guess is the major issue is that his curveball has went from a plus pitch to a non factor, making him a one pitch pitcher in essence. Without the curve, if command is off just a tad, Gallardo will get rocked- especially if he isn't able to keep the hitters off balance by changing speeds.
