  1. The Brewers would never take that PR hit. 'You traded Prince for who?', and 'You paid his salary too?'. It would even be worse if it was a bigger market team. Again, I ask, if a team is unwilling to basically acquire Prince and give him a one year deal at a reasonable rate without demanding salary relief, who is going to give him the huge contract that he's seeking? I'd rather keep him, see how the market pans out and take the high draft picks if he leaves. This team cannot afford to be paying guys to play for other teams (Suppan being the rare exception because he was a monumental mistake and was killing the team, giving Hall away was a blunder).
  2. No Moneyball disciples, unless they can bring Hudson, Mulder and Zito in their primes with them. In my opinion, they were the key to Moneyball's success, and the mighty Billy Beane has put together a Bando-esque team ever since they have been gone. Terry Ryan would be a great choice, but he would be very hard to pull out of retirement and/or away from the Twins organization. Perhaps if Mark A. threw a boatload of money at him, he would reconsider.
  3. I can assure you that Fielder won't be traded if the Brewers are required to pick up one red cent of salary. That would be the height of stupidity. EDITED: Unless a guy like Josh Johnson, Greinke, or one of the Tampa Bay studs (not Wade Davis) is on the other end of the deal.
  4. He would give up about 20-ish HR per year, and wound up serving 303 up for his career. (Baseball-Reference tells me it was .7 HR per 9 innings.) Could you imagine hitting that many in your career in not ever having a GS? Not a stat, but I always thought he had the most graceful motion in the game. According to Wikipedia, Palmer never gave up back to back homers either. I was not aware of that, and I'm checking to confirm since Wikipedia is sometimes a little sketchy, but if true, that is almost more impressive.
  5. Jim Palmer never having given up a Grand Slam is probably my favorite oddball stat. Considering the long career he had, I find that absolutely amazing.
  6. Not counting Escobar, I'd run Gomez (though I know you can't steal first) and Weeks more. I'd say both of them could easily have at least 10 more steals this year. Against poor throwing catchers, I'd run anyone more.
  7. Provided Weeks can be extended, I'd do something built around Lawrie and Parra. Obviously, that would just be a start because Parra's value is so low. The Brewers should have acquired Wes Helms so he could have been used as a chip for Ned.
  8. You have perfectly summed up what in my view is the failure of Macha (and to a lesser extent Melvin) to produce a winning team- and that is an unwillingness to take risks. Macha is far too conservative for my tastes, and would be better suited for a pushbutton type team, one like... I don't know, one with Hudson, Mulder and Zito as your 1,2 and 3 starters.
  9. Done. Is Mike's Hard Lemonade off limits?....Just kidding.
  10. I don't look down on anybody for whatever beer they drink, that said I will rib the heck out of them. The fact is that for the price and the hype, in my opinion, Spotted Cow is just not a good beer. If I wanted to drink a 'lighter' beer, may as well just have a Miller product or anything that comes in a 30 pack cube for that matter. If I want a 'real' beer, there are several other great Wisconsin breweries that produce them, and it's frustrating to see Spotted Cow on tap at nearly every bar I go into that has something other than Miller products. May as well put 'Summer Shandy' on tap as well. I am also not looking down on those who drink 'one or two'. That said, I bet that the list of people who have polished off a 12 pack of Spotted Cow is very short. Do I think that Spotted Cow is a little feminine? I can't lie, yes I do... I also think that Corona or any of the 'lime' beers are feminine. Does that make me condescending? Probably. That said, I've probably been a little brainwashed by the thousands of High Life commercials that I've watched over the years.
  11. In my view, successful base stealing equals a greater chance to score runs. Think back to when Estrada was catching for the Brewers. How many runs do you think his pathetic arm cost the team? The point is that if you are playing a team with a poor throwing catcher, you should exploit it. I wonder how many games this season the Brewers have more than one steal. I would guess not many. Just another example of why Macha needs to go. I can hardly wait until Macha is gone, less than 60 days.
  12. No condescension necessary. Simply put, the people in Madison who would have drank Zima in 1993 now drink Spotted Cow.... generally the type that only have a beer or two, poured in a glass of course- so they can stick their pinky in the air while they drink it. Spotted Cow is definitely the trendy brew in Madison, and it is favored by the Yuppie set and served at every 'Mover and Shaker' function. You may think that it's a decent beer, and that's your opinion. Personally, I think it tastes like watered-down Grain Belt, and that's my opinion. In my opinion, it's definitely not worthy of the hype or worthy of the price tag. Going further, it may be locally produced, but there are several local microbreweries that actually brew a more 'authentic' beer.
  13. If Prince charged the mound once and beat down the pitcher, I have a feeling that the HBP variance would shrink. I wonder if Boras told Prince not to charge the mound.....he wouldn't want to hurt his rep with prospective employers, now would he?
  14. Basically, the answer to your question is that Macha is a dolt. Gomez, Escobar, Weeks, Hart and even Braun have above average speed, but it is not utilized. This team is stealing bases at about a 75% clip, so even the Moneyballers should admit that is a plus. A Tom Trebelhorn or Phil Garner managed team would have at least twice as many steals as this one (and likely many more wins too, but I digress).
  15. Not to derail this thread, but why is Spotted Cow so incredibly popular? I have tried it and it's just not my "thing." There's a local bar down the road from my house, and they won't take Spotted Cow off their taps. And it's an Irish pub with only six taps (they do have Guinness, Harp, and Smithwick's, so at least they have the essentials covered). I just don't get what is so great about it. As I tell my friends who drink it, Spotted Cow is for girls and 'girl drink drunks', basically for people who 'don't like the taste of beer'. I'm not sure why... it tastes like flat swill to me. But, it's the trendy thing I guess.
  16. So Cuban trying to make a splash initially and bidding up player salaries helps the Brewers how? I'm pretty sure that he would be against revenue sharing as well, even though I'm not convinced that he has still the assets that he once had. Despite the hype, how many NBA championships has Dallas won since he took ownership?
  17. I looked him up in the World Book Encyclopedia once and it referred me to "Bag, Douche". No, I don't want him in baseball, he's a publicity 'hound', and would do a poor Charlie O. Finley impersonation.
  18. I disagree. There is a reason that the Brewers get hit so much. They have the reputation of cocky young punks without the brass (and now skills) to back it up.Where are you getting that information?Oh. I don't know, the 'untucking', the 'grenade' home run celebration, the 'run off' homerun....mostly the fact that I've seen these guys 'admire' scores of home runs, but I don't remember a one of them ever charging the mound (Prince's under the stands rampage flanked by security at Dodger stadium doesn't count). I guess that the fact they are getting drilled a full 2/3 over the major league average is just some weird statistical anomaly - especially when you combine that with the fact that they are leading the league in home runs.
  19. I disagree. There is a reason that the Brewers get hit so much. They have the reputation of cocky young punks without the brass (and now skills) to back it up.
  20. Well, you definitely want beer. And wine and Spotted Cow for the non-beer drinkers.
  21. Once again....Like the often lackadaisical play on the field, this is a reflection of the manager. In many clubhouses, guys would get guff for not charging the mound or a pitcher not protecting the hitters. Macha has probably told the players not to do either. This team looks like it is one made of several small cliques (some of one), most of which probably hate Macha (with a few that love him)- as opposed to the 2008 team that seemed to actually be pretty tight. What a difference a manager makes, and it will be the second best day (next to the Suppan release) of the Brewer year this year when Macha is canned.
  22. If they could win 20 in a row, they might get back into things.....Seriously, I was one of the few here who thought they had a chance prior to the Reds series, but after Monday, they needed to win 5 in a row, not lose them in mostly embarrassing fashion. The only race left now, is whether they can finish ahead of the Cubs. Time to fire Macha and give Sveum the job for the rest of the year. If Randolph doesn't like it, he can go home as well.
  23. As I said above, the developments of this trade deadline don't exactly bode well for Prince's future earning potential (relatively speaking, of course). You can't say that there was heavy interest for Prince, because the Brewers weren't exactly beating suitors away with a stick. Going further, teams were cutting salary, and even the Yankees were demanding money back for some guys. Prince was probably downtrodden about that and came off a little sullen. Maybe he is second-guessing Boras for turning down the $100 million or whatever and that deal is now off the table- who knows?
  24. I don't even know if I'd do a Randy Wolf for Kazmir deal at this point. Kazmir is fairly young, but his performance has been pretty bad the past couple of seasons. Going further he has had some issues with 'shoulder fatigue'. I'd probably stay away,.
  25. They are still paying a lot of salary for the guys they traded.Exactly. It seemed like they were cutting their losses or something. I couldn't believe that they ate some of Oswalt's salary and then they ate a big chunk of Berkman's salary - to the Yankees, none the less. It doesn't make any sense, unless they are up against some cash flow issues in the next few years. If I'm a team GM, I'm not sending the Yankees any money along with a player on principal alone...... I suppose I'd have made an exception for Suppan though.
