  1. I've argued this many times before, but would you rather have had Sheets extended for 3.5 years (the first of which he would have been hurt) than sign Suppan for 4 years after 2006? I'm not Monday morning QBing either- I felt at the time that the Suppan signing would likely lead to the loss of Sheets. Say what you want about him, but Sheets was a once in a decade (generation for the Brewers) pitching talent for a franchise, and you don't let guys like that walk. I blame Melvin for the 'ice bridge' that formed between the team and Sheets. Losing Maddux probably didn't help matters either, and really hurt the team in other ways. I think we've seen the value in a good pitching coach the past few years.
  2. Benny just tossed another gem today. 8 K's in 6 innings with only four baserunners allowed. Not bad for a guy still working off some rust. His ERA now stands a bit over 5- better than Randy Wolf. Who would you rather have? It's an easy answer for me. In 10 years, I think Sheets is going to be linked with Melvin as Molitor is to Bando.
  3. That's actually a good idea. They could have the 'Suppan rule' where if the team falls behind by more then 5 runs, Soup finishes the game. This rule is in effect until his arm falls off.
  4. This isn't the NFL or NBA. First round picks- especially those out of the Top 3 generally mean squat in the short term of 3 years and less (and actually generally mean squat in the long run too). Guys like Braun, are the exception, not the rule. Losing Sabathia and not attempting to retain Sheets was the huge blow.
  5. I think that it was 64-65 several times on Friday though.
  6. Referring to the Suppan DFI comment, I believe DFI stands for 'Discard For Ineptitude". Now on to Bush. Something is up with him, I don't know if it's mechanics, age, injury or a 'dead arm'. I've been a booster of his in the past, but last night he looked terrible. He reminded me of Ben Hendrickson out there. Every 86 MPH 'fastball' was belt high or above. You could just tell that he was going to get pounded. His curveball seemed slow too, almost like an eephus pitch. It looked like it was breaking, but I'm not sure if that was just the arch on the pitch. He also looked really awkward throwing it. Perhaps it would be best putting him in the pen for awhile
  7. Well, 7 of 8 got Yost fired- with two weeks left in the season, none the less. Now we have Macha (who has accomplished far less with far more than Yost) who has lost 11 of 12 and is looking 12 of 13 square in the face. Let's face it, he has to go if for no other reason than to change things up a bit. He's not coming back next year anyway, so you may as well see what Randolph can do. This year, you can blame the bullpen, last year you can blame the starting pitching, etc., etc. The fact is that it's Macha's job to utilize his talent in the best possible way, and I don't feel that he's doing that. Obviously, there is some questionable talent on the roster as well, and that falls to Melvin and is directly attributable to some of his mistakes. He needs to be held accountable for that at the end of the season, what 'held accountable' means, I don't know exactly at this point. Personally, every good start that Sheets makes pushes me closer to the 'fire Melvin' crowd.
  8. Remember, Melvin has a 'thing' for Macha, going back to the days where they were minor league teammates. I'm sure he is still lobbying hard with Attanasio on his behalf. That's all we need is cronyism on this sinking ship. Melvin wanted Macha before he hired Yost, and thank god he turned the job down. If Macha had taken the job, Weeks would probably be playing elsewhere a la Brandon Phillips, and Braun and Fielder would have been mishandled too. The more I watch how Macha operates, the more I realize that Yost wasn't really that bad outside of how he handled the bullpen. Macha on the other hand is terrible in both strategy and demeanor, you can just sense that the players just don't want to play for the guy. He's a terrible manager, and he never would have won in Oakland had he not had 3 studs in the rotation. For what it's worth, despite the lip service we have been getting, I still say Macha is gone on Monday or Tuesday morning.
  9. Ugh. Ugly situation brewin'... Mark A goes on to say that it will take more than just one bad season for Melvin to be fired, too... Perhaps if Mark A won't listen to fans complaining then maybe he'll pay more attention when fans stop showing up at Miller Park I don't care how clear Attanasio was, what was he supposed to say- "Yes, we are deciding who will be our interim manager who we will introduce on Monday." If the Crew doesn't win these two games, I say Macha is toast. If these guys get embarrassed for the rest of the weekend and Macha is retained, I will lose a lot of respect for Attanasio, especially considering how Ned was treated.
  10. I would bet there is a 95% chance of Randolph managing Tuesday's game at this point. As someone else mentioned, Mark A. was a Yankee fan, so I'm sure he's enamored with the guy. I didn't watch many Mets games when he was there, so I have no opinion on him. Apparently, he worked wonders with Weeks, so I wouldn't be dead set against giving him a chance, especially considering the season is pretty much over already. If he's as bad as many claim, he will be comparable to Royster in 2002, and we won't have to worry about him being a candidate for the full time job. If that happens, once the season is over, both he and Melvin will be gone. I agree with those who say that Sveum should get the job, but I don't see it happening. On the slight chance that it does, Willie will be gone in a couple of days as well.
  11. I keep hearing this 'small ball' complaint about Sveum, but what people are conveniently forgetting that when he took over the club, they were barely scoring any runs. I just looked it up, and for the 14 games that Yost managed in September, the Brewers scored a TOTAL of 38 runs- only hitting five once. That's barely 2.5 runs per game- absolutely pathetic. Why not try to manufacture some runs if your offense is that bad? It's not like you can sit back and wait for the team to string together 3-4 hits or be ripping doubles and homers. When you have the rare occaision of getting a guy on base, why not move him over, so you only need one hit to score a run?
  12. Bring him up and cut Suppan. It would probably be good for Capuano to be scheduled to be used out of the bullpen every 5th day or so. The way this rotation is, finding him opportunities to work in the 4th or 5th inning should not be a problem. This way, he can probably get 3 or 4 innings in regualarly.
  13. I still say Macha needs two wins in Minnesota to save his job. If the Twins sweep, I'd say it's 99% that he's gone Monday morning, regardless of what Melvin wants.
  14. I wasn't even talking about Sleep Gate. He just looks brutal at the plate. You guys have awakened him. Walk off pinch hit today.
  15. Is that really what caused his abrupt dismissal? Any details? In hindsight, I think he would have been a good option.
  16. The Brewers are now 70-92 in their last 162 games. Absolutely pathetic. Maybe Ken could be left home in Pittsubrgh, and his things could be sent to him? I think that it's pretty tough for anybody to defend Macha at this point. I agree with those that Sveum has the better chance to get this team playing well than Randolph (I would have hired Sveum full time in the first place), but I'd say 90% that if/when a change is made, Willie will be the guy. I'm OK with that, because this will be a short term audition, and he won't be the #1 candidate after the season ends, as he would if Macha was kept until the season was over. Macha has been an utter failure as a manager of this team. Everyone loves to bash Yost, but I shudder to think what would have happened had Macha not turned Melvin down the first time. Macha's record with Oakland was much more attributable to Zito, Hudson and Mulder than his managerial accumen.
  17. That's a good point. Though it's a nice dream, the only two guys I can think of in the past 20 years that walked away from big contracts mid-season were Mike Schmidt and Ryne Sandberg (though he came back later). That said, both those guys are Hall of Famers, so maybe Hoffman would want to preserve his 'legacy' in the eyes of voters and not leave them with the impression that he hung on too long.....so maybe there is a slim chance with him. Sadly, the odds that Suppan would retire are the same as his HOF chances.
  18. I think that Macha needs at least 3 wins by the end of the week, or next week at this time, Randolph will be manager. I posted this after the San Diego debacle a few weeks ago and they got 5 out of 6, hopefully it works again...
  19. Sheets was a Bando pick. Taylor was just a horrible GM. He hired Lopes and made stupid trade after stupid signing. Trades like Vina for Acevedo, Valentin/Eldred for Snyder/Navarro, Cirillo/Karl for Wright/Haynes/Blanco, Burnitz/D'Amico for Rusch/Ochoa, etc., etc. Yes, he traded for Sexson but the main piece in that deal,Wickman was a Bando acquisition. Outside of the Sheffield and Vaughn trades in which the team's hand was pretty much forced, most of Bando's deals worked out pretty well.
  20. Exactly why I have a tough time defending him. I still lay the blame more on Selig for either using Molitor as a sacrificial lamb for the small market plight and/or being asleep at the wheel due to his new job as 'Interim Commissioner'. Bando spewing the company 'just a DH' line, plus the way he drafted makes him hard to defend. That said, if you look the majority of his major league trades, and they weren't too bad. Taylor was horrible with player moves (outside of Sexson) and he didn't exactly build the Dodgers farm system of the 60's and 70's.
  21. I hate to be a Bando apologist, but in my opinion, he was a much better GM than Dean Taylor, especially at the MLB level. In 7 plus seasons, the team was about 50 some games under during his tenure, under Taylor they were nearly 100 games under in four years. Say what you want about the drafting and minor leagues under Bando, he drafted Sheets and Jenkins. Now seven years later, not much has come from Taylor's drafting/development either outside of Fielder. Dean Taylor was the definition of an 'utter failure'. He gave away most of what little talent that Bando had assembled (Cirillo, Vina, Valentin, etc.) for garbage, and signed guys like Jose K and Hammonds, basically leaving the team in shambles.
  22. I think that it's time for Macha to go. Say what you want about the dearth of pitching, I feel that the team has underachieved at least slightly under Macha, and it's looking more and more like he is a lame duck anyway. They have been pretty brutal since Weeks' injury last season. The fact is that Macha has done far less than Yost, and management had no qualms showing Yost the door in a pretty humiliating way. I say fire Macha, and do the inevitable and promote Randolph to interim manager for the remainder of the season (although I would prefer Sveum). One of two things will happen, the change will spark the team, or they will continue their descent down the toilet as happened under Royster a la 2002. If the team does collapse, they will then have no qualms letting Randolph and Melvin go like the purge of '02. Melvin has done many good things, but as someone mentioned, we are talking about two winning seasons and a Wild Card berth. Supposedly Melvin was the driving force behind the Macha hire as well, which he has to take accountability for. If all goes down, I would think that Attanasio would go for 'name' guys like Valentine, etc. when looking to fill the GM and manager roles.
  23. I wouldn't say that it was terrible, but it wasn't the heist that many believe. In a way we acted as waste management for the D-Backs. Moeller was horrendous, Counsell '1' was brutal at the plate, Spivey was mediocre to bad (although he did net Ohka who was OK until the injury), Overbay and Capuano (until he got hurt) were solid. DeLaRosa, was supposedly the 'blue chipper' in the deal and busted here because he was not given a chance. I can see what Melvin was trying to do in filling holes in the wreckage created by Dean Taylor though. All in all, if Sexson kept doing 80% of what he was doing here, this trade looks pretty bad for the Brewers. On the other hand, if Capuano stays healthy it was probably an OK deal no matter what. That said, I don't want another 'Waste Management' deal for Fielder. There is enough mediocrity on this roster as it stands now. I want at least two guys that have high ceilings, preferably both pitchers. If that can't be done, keep him and let him walk if he gets a better offer.
  24. Exactly. I don't want to see another Sexson-type deal 6 for 1 or whatever (In retrospect, the only reason that trade looks good is because Sexson got hurt and then totally flopped.). I don't want multiple 'guys', I want quality not quantity. If teams are not willing to give up anything good, I'd rather just keep Fielder and let the chips fall where they may.
