  1. In my opinion, if this team keeps this Jekyll and Hyde stuff up (look like they might be finally putting it together then lose 3 or 4 in a row), the first thing that needs to be done is to fire Macha- and soon. He's not coming back next year anyway if they don't have a winning record, so why not try to catch lightning in a bottle like in '82 or with the Rockies a couple of years ago? As I've said before, I'd prefer Sveum to Randolph, but that's not going to happen. If nothing else, this will give the team a chance to audition Randolph, and then have no qualms about showing him the door if there is no improvement. I also agree with those who feel that it's time to get Parra in the rotation. Davis can take his role in the bullpen, whatever the heck that is. After the season is over, depending on how bad things are, Melvin may need to go as well- especially if Sheets and Hardy have good years, because in my view, he bungled the handling of both of them. He is the one who hired Macha, and since the Carlos Lee trade with the Sox, his trade accumen has been closer to Dean Taylor than Sal Bando. I'm not sure if I want him to be the one to trade Prince, if that has to happen.
  2. I admittedly haven't been following him much, but if that's all Arnett projects to be, seems like a wasted first round pick already less than a year out.
  3. The problem with this team has been an incredibly inconsistent offense, poor defense, a brutal bullpen, and spotty starting pitching. Eventually, I think the offense and defense will kind of even things out, I think the bullpen could be somewhat improved simply by Macha changing his philosophy (e.g. going to the guys who have been effective), and I'm somewhat heartened with Narveson's progress thus far. Hopefully, his improvement over Suppan will bolster the confidence of management to replace Davis with a better option if he keeps scuffling.
  4. So far, I'm very impressed with his progress. That said, I temper my enthusiasm a bit, because any pitcher who is in the majors not named Suppan should be able to dominate A ball hitters.
  5. Since they have nearly nothing invested in McGehee, this isn't one of those 'sell high' situations in my opinion. I say that you ride him out. The only scenario that I could see him as a piece to bring back a good pitcher would be if a team like Florida was salary dumping anyway, and wanted someone cheap and productive coming back.
  6. Joe Inglett and Edmonds both starting in the OF tonight? For the love of God, I hope Macha has the brains to give Gerut some regular time. Let's see what he's got for once and for all, because I think he's an OK player. Some guys don't do well pinch hitting and getting 5 starts a month. Let him start for a week or so.
  7. Say what you want about Zito, but he's never been 'Suppan bad' during this obscene contract, at least the Giants have gotten something for their money. Zito's looked like Steve Carlton in his prime over the past 3 years when you compare him with Soup.
  8. It seems that a lot of people are taking some glee in Sheets' performance to this point. Keep in mind however that he's only a few months removed from basically not pitching against live hitters for a year and a half. There has to be some rust, especially considering that his best pitch, the curveball is a feel pitch. I'm pretty confident that he will bounce back, and yes- I'd most certainly rather have him at $10 million than Jeff Suppan out there polluting the bullpen for $13 million.
  9. First, I offer Fielder 5 years/$126 million, which is symbolically more than Howard got. If he doesn't bite, things are looking like the Brewers may very well be sellers at the deadline this year, so I think that you have to maximize his value and move him then. I'm just not sure that I want Melvin making the trade- his record on trades hasn't been very good since, well the Sexson trade, I guess- which in retrospect now really only looks good because Sexson fell off the face of the earth so quickly. I'm not sure if I want some interim lame duck GM doing the trade either though.
  10. If Macha doesn't get this team to win at least a few games this week, I'm with the others who are thinking that next Monday might be a 'busy day' around here. It's not really 'early' anymore and we have the precedence of Lopes being canned about 2 weeks into the season.
  11. Do you really want Sveum when he believes in bunting in the first inning. Dale showed exactly what kind of manager he is when he took over from Ned and it was unimpressive to save the least. He is the ultimate believer in small ball and we dont need a manager looking to give away outs to try to squeeze out a run when we should be trying to score a lot more than that. I'm maybe the only 'small ball' guy on this board, so yes that's one of the big reasons that I like Sveum. The other being that I think this team needs a player's manager to loosen up that clubhouse a bit.
  12. I really don't want Randolph to get the job either (though he'd probably be better than Macha). Ironically enough, I remember being quite upset when Lopes was hired instead of Randolph- but I digress. I wish they could go with Sveum again if the wheels start to come off, but that's not going to happen because of Randolph's presence.
  13. In my opinion, Bamberger 1 was the best manager the team ever had and it's not even close. He'd be the perfect manager for this team now, I wonder what he could do with some of the young pitchers like Parra, etc. For his second go round in 85 and 86, he just didn't have the horses. He had a lot of old guys past their primes and the young talent was just getting to the majors. Obviously he had a good effect on them, because 1987 was a great year. Which brings me to Trebelhorn, who was also a pretty good manager. The only real problem that I had with him was like Yost, he often had no clue when to pull a starter. Might as well go back on the others as far as I can form an educated opinion... Lachemann..... tried 'new' things- most didn't work. Injuries and age sunk him after one season. Kuenn.... the right guy at the right time. Let the guys play. His health problems pretty much ensured a short reign. Rodgers... at the time, I didn't think he got a fair shake, but the team was underachieving and probably wouldn't have gotten to the World Series with him. Apparently not too popular with the players (sound familiar?) Grammas..... I was kind of young, but he seemed pretty stubborn to me, always seemed to be feuding with a player, kind of came off as a loud mouthed idiot
  14. Well, I've never liked Macha. I liked Yost the first two years. Royster was a joke. Hated Lopes. Garner was the last good manager they had. It seemed like he had those undermanned teams competitive almost every year at least into August or so.
  15. You know, that's a heck of a good point. If he could bring his buddy TK with him, I'd be on board.
  16. I'm pretty sure that Larivee worked WGN Cubs broadcasts for a few years back in the day. He'd be a good replacement, but I'm hoping he takes a break in the summer. During pro/college football and college basketball, that guy must have like ten million frequent flyer miles. During the basketball season, he will be in Iowa City one day and State College the next. I actually think Gorman Thomas would be a good choice to fill the Uecker role. He'd be very raw - Santo like. That said, I've always been thoroughly entertained with his stories when he has sat in the booth. He has a very good sense of humor and gift of gab.
  17. I don't think he's hurt. As others have said, he's missing his spots right now, falling behind, and then throwing 'Jerry Augustine' fastballs right down the pipe that get crushed. If he doesn't have pinpoint control, he's in trouble.
  18. I'm not on the Fire Melvin bandwagon just yet, but if he is let go, this has to be the season to do it. The Brewers are probably coming up towards one of their most pivotal off-seasons ever, and I don't want anybody with a smidgen of lame duck in them making those decisions.
  19. I think about 5 years ago, Michaels did fill in- for I believe Ueck's Hall of Fame induction during a weekend series against the Rockies. Powell was gone too. It was brutal, positively brutal.
  20. It does make you wonder if he could have been had in the Hardy deal. He was definitely not a slam dunk to make the rotation up there at the beginning of the spring
  21. You know what, you are absolutely right. Have you ever watched the 'Sports Show' or whatever it's called, where the sports writers discuss the 'issues of the day' in Wisconsin sports on weekend TV? True looks like a deer in the headlights, and has trouble stringing four coherent words together without at least thrice as many 'um's'. That's my only exposure to him as I won't listen to his dreck on the radio, but he does seem a brutal trainwreck.
  22. Please God, no Matt Lepay. The only worse option would be Bill Michaels.
  23. All that I have to say is that Ben Sheets would look nice in a Brewers uniform now. I don't want to see any sabermetrics saying he's been 'lucky' to this point either. On another note, someone mentioned David Riske as a closer. The only thing David Riske may be closing now is on a mansion bought with the salary that he's stealing from the Brewers. Outside of Doug Jones and Trevor Hoffman, most closers can break 90 mph at least, not the 87 that Riske maxes out on.
  24. Considering the team is already spending 30% of their payroll on the garbage that is Suppan, Riske, and Hall, I'd have no problem doing the same with Prince. What else are they going to spend it on, the next soft tossing veteran starter coming off a career year and a middle reliever doing the same?
