  1. I wouldn't touch Lee with a ten foot pole at that kind of money. He's been very hittable this year.
  2. Veras is right with them. He's walking over 6 guys per nine innings this season, and I'd be willing to bet that he's walked the first batter he's faced at least 25 percent of the time. The guy is pure garbage.
  3. All that I can say after watching Veras this season is that there is a reason that he's on his 5th organization in 4 seasons. I hope that the Brewers send him to his 6th soon. An ERA in the high threes is not very good for a reliever anyway, and his career ERA is over four. Is there such a thing is a trade that was bad for both teams?
  4. That was why it was so crucial to extend Greinke. Now that he's gone, he's not coming back. The Brewers are never going to sign the number one rated free agent. There's really nothing out there to improve the team in free agency outside of some arms for the bullpen. I believe that Peavy has a huge option, but if he keeps dealing I'm sure the White Sox will pick it up. Combine that with the fact that they don't really have the ammo to swing any deals for veterans, and the short term prognosis looks pretty bleak.
  5. I'm glad that they didn't take the Rangers' trash. Let them make do with Oswalt and whatever secondary pitcher they pick up to go with the rest. I'm sure when Roy gets his legs under him, he'll get that ERA under 5.
  6. Interesting, thanks. If they have lost 26 games when handing the bullpen a lead, that has to put them close to record pace. It seems like an insanely high number, but it's got to be close to 10 in July alone.
  7. I don't think that there is a coach in history that could do anything with Wolf at this point. I think that he's just about done. His curveball has now slowed to under 60 MPH, and his velocity overall seems down. He'll have some decent games here and there, but a good chunk of the time, major league hitters are going to hit him like its BP. As we've seen, all it takes is one inning where is location is off, and you have a crooked number up against you in the blink of an eye.
  8. The starting pitching outside of Wolf has been fine, the bullpen has been the issue. Most of the guys out there are veterans, so I don't attribute their sucking to coaching... they are just a vacuum.
  9. I'm not completely immune to blaming coaches for the poor performance of players. That said, in this case, I want to see K-Rod and Veras 'fired' first. Frankly, I never want to see either of them in a Brewer uniform again.
  10. There may be 'worse' bullpens if you use stats or WAR, but keep in mind, that on a lot of teams starters have trouble getting through the fifth inning. That generally hasn't been the case with the Brewers this year. I'd expect a bad team that regularly uses their pen in the 4th inning with mop up guys, etc to have worse bullpen stats than the Brewers. How many times has the bullpen been handed the lead in the 7th inning and gagged it away, with the team to go onto lose? It has to be at least a dozen, and I'm wondering what the record is... they have to be close to the pace.
  11. The bullpen coach basically does nothing. Back in the day, they were just there as kind of emergency bullpen catchers. Now, with full time BP catchers they basically just answer the phone.
  12. OK, I consider myself a fairly reasonable fan. I generally don't call for someone's head after one or a few bad decisions or plays, don't rant and rave too much. I'm pretty patient. That said, if K-Rod and Veras are still on this team on August 1st, I'm going to have a hard time watching for the rest of the season. I'll also lose a lot of faith in the front office.
  13. At this point, I have to think that this is one of the worst bullpens in MLB history. They certainly have to be on pace for the record for most games lost leading after seven innings. Get the Elias Sports Bureau on the line.
  14. I'm fully expecting word soon that Marcum will be going under the knife. I've had a feeling for awhile that this thing is worse than they've been letting on, because no one this side of Teddy Higuera misses six weeks plus with 'discomfort'. Looks like another Sheets situation where they aren't even going to get a pick for him. I just hope that they've learned their lesson and don't play with fire in an attempt to keep the draft choice.
  15. Why do they have to spend it this offseason? They don't have to, but I bet that they will. With all the free agent defections and non tenders, there should be at least 25 million off the books for next season. Trade Hart or Ramirez and you are in the 35-40 million range. Maybe Attanasio would be in for a rebuild and he would consider the drop in attendance to be OK because of the lower payroll, but I doubt it. I fully expect Melvin to be in on the Dempster/Lohse, etc. sweepstakes unless Attanasio tells him to slash payroll. If they do a rebuild, I would greatly prefer a complete one then a partial, that's for sure, and in that case we are looking to be at least three years out.... to me, that means move everyone except for Braun. As we stand right now, there is only one contract that is looking bad down the road. If that means keeping Weeks too, I'm OK with that, because I think he bounces back.
  16. Again, the issue with me is if you save money on a guy like Hart, where do you apply it? Quite frankly, the FA list for the off-season is a tad appalling. The Brewers just traded number one on the list, and let's just say that the list of positional players is 'thin'. Would you want them to trade Hart and Ramirez and then give most of the money to a guy like Hamilton, who has been worse than Rickie Weeks since his early season tear? The pitching is also pretty thin, and because it's so thin, guys are going to be getting overpaid in a big way. If they dump guys like Hart and Ramirez solely for salary relief, they may as well do the old Marlins method and tear the whole thing apart, looking into moving guys like Gallardo, Weeks and Lucroy as well.
  17. From what I've seen, this guy can't be worse than Veras. I'd be happy if they could move him in the next couple of days... I don't care what they get back.
  18. I have to admit that I would take some satisfaction in watching Texas SP implode down the stretch. I get the "win a championship every year, not one year" mantra, but as we've seen with the Brewers this season, injuries and other wrenches can be thrown into things.... easier said than done. As we stand right now, I'd bet that the Rangers will end up trading for Garza (the second time that he is a countermove to a Greinke move, I believe). Then their fans will spin how he is 'just as good' as Greinke and under team control for another year.... plus a better playoff performer.
  19. Hoping that Rogers can contribute to the Brewers down the road, be it as a starter or a reliever. I'd like to say that he's the poster child for my cynicism regarding prospects (particularly pitchers)- but truth be told, just by virtue of a few major league starts, he's probably in the top third of first round drafted pitchers throughout Brewer history.
  20. Let's see if he gets back on the mound again this year first. Did he actually do a bullpen session this week? I thought that was on the docket, but I've heard nothing.
  21. I give this kid tons of credit, and I'm really becoming a fan of how he pitches. I actually see a bit of Bosio in him. Was he ever coached by Bosio in the minors? I'm not ready to anoint him as a top of the rotation guy just yet, but I've got to think that he's exceeded even the loftiest expectations thus far.
  22. What a comeback, I love it. Benny is setting himself up for a decent contract. I really hope that he can stay healthy.
  23. I didn't know Scutaro was part of that deal. I looked up his minor league numbers, and they looked pretty good. what did he do, or not do, to be waived? This was probably the only good trade that Dean Taylor made during in his time in Milwaukee. Have to give him and Bando credit for basically turning Graeme Lloyd into Sexson.
