  1. I'd rather have a .225 hitter with the defensive acumen of Maldonado then a .225 hitter who is poor defensively like Kottaras.... meaning that even if Maldonado tails off with the bat in a big way, he will still have value.
  2. Referring to Jurrjens, Guthrie, Sanchez.....I wouldn't have interest in any of those guys right now. Based on what they are making, I'd be willing to bet that all three will be non-tendered this winter, and will be available on the cheap come next spring. I'm not sure that I'd give any of them more than a NRI at this point though.
  3. I've never been the biggest fan of Parra, but I'd actually be inclined to keep him at this point. As for Veras and Loe, I'll help them pack, because neither will be worth what they will get in arby next year.
  4. Why would you trade Maldonado at this point? Maybe at some point down the road in a year or two you trade either Lucroy or Maldonado, but I don't see the point right now - especially as a throw in on a bigger deal. Just DFA Kottaras already. The guy is easily replaceable if necessary. It seems like he hasn't gotten a hit since mid-April.
  5. But jolly good was steady and consistent Not necessarily. I always felt that the cola left something to be desired. I thought that the orange wasn't quite up to the level of Crush either. At the same time, there were quite a few 'home runs' in their cornucopia of flavors.
  6. Well, retribution is illegal too and I'm not sure what he could do other than try to screw us out of our security deposit. Not all forms of retribution are illegal.... I'm sure if he was petty enough, you could expect lots of 'visits' for 'maintenance', etc.. These sorts of things would not only be annoying, but he could use them to spy on you to make sure that you are following the lease to the letter. If it were me, I'd feel the guy out a bit to see what direction he may take things. Maybe he's a perfectly reasonable guy who is unaware of the fact that leases are legally binding... maybe he's an unreasonable fool that isn't worth the stress and trouble. Since the lease is on your side, it probably wouldn't hurt to give him a call to let him know your side of things.
  7. Do you have any legal service benefits through your work or school? Often, you can get services for little to no cost. In this case, all that it would take to stop this would be for an attorney to review your lease and draft a letter to the new owner. However, you should be prepared for possible retribution from the property owner though, so it may not even be worth your while to stay. Maybe the guy would be willing to pay relocation expenses in the form of a month or two of free rent to get you out of there.
  8. Jolly Good was the Corey Hart of soda, that's for sure. Great bargain, underrated and underappreciated. I used to love putting together my own case with a hodge-podge of varieties. Beside the aforementioned cream soda, my personal favorite was the cherry soda. It's a crying shame that you can still find Faygo products in nearly every grocery store, but Jolly Good is no more.
  9. I wouldn't take him for 'free' given that contract, let alone trade anything of value for him.
  10. I'm not giving the Dodgers a nickel of salary relief. Actually, I'd insist on Hairston plus a decent prospect for Ramirez. Trading Hairston would give them some savings. Somebody will need to play third base for the near future, and I'm not as enamored with Green as a lot of people here are.
  11. Let Greinke walk, and what do you do with the money? Look at the free agents for the coming off-season. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/04/2013-mlb-free-agents.html Pretty brutal. If Greinke is allowed to leave, I think that given the state of the farm system, they may as well do a complete rebuild, putting guys like Gallardo and Lucroy out there (basically anyone but Braun). Unfortunately, Melvin would not be in the position to do that, so it's a given that they will spend the money by overpaying someone like Dempster/Lohse and some other mediocre and/or old free agent starting pitcher.
  12. The Rockies must have wanted to dump a bit of salary. I see no other reason to trade anything for Sanchez when he almost certainly would have been available for free in a couple of days. Guthrie might be OK in Kansas City, but I shudder to think how bad Sanchez will be in Colorado.
  13. Hindsight is 20/20. Trades that result in a post season run are always more forgiving. Losing talent in a trade that doesn't is painful, in contrast. That's exactly the point. Does anyone think that the Brewers make the run they do last year without making those deals?
  14. Exactly. I don't remember hearing people whining about giving up Kevin Bass for Don Sutton throughout the 80's, even when Paul Householder was starting in the OF a few years later. Bottom line, even though Sutton was close to washed up at that point, the Brewers most likely don't even make the playoffs without him in '82. You have to give to get. Maybe it's just me, but neither Lawrie or Escobar look like future HOF at this point.
  15. He's definitely worn out his welcome in Arizona. I wouldn't see the harm in trading a fringe prospect for him if that's all it took, but I agree that it'd probably be better to pursue him in the off season.
  16. No almost about it for me. I told myself before this stretch that unless they went 8-1 or 9-0, I absolutely want them selling. I'm rooting against them to protect the FO from themselves. Ditto. I understand how it would look to the "casual fan" if they traded away Greinke after sweeping or taking 2 of 3 so I hope they lose. If most fans understood how important it is to be constantly cycling talent into the organization, I don't think there would be a problem with selling even if they win a little. Unfortunately, most people are only fixated on the present and I bet the jsonline posters would be going crazy if they traded Greinke after winning 2 of 3, even though this team would likely lose the 1st round/play-in game if they even managed to squeak in. I think that you guys set the bar too high. During the vast majority of my Brewer fandom, the odds have been long against them before the season started. In a lot of seasons, I'd have been pumped if they were coming off a 4-2 homestand even if they were 7.5 back in July. Bottom line, I see no reason to cheer for them to lose so trades can be made. Most of the names bandied about have pretty minimal trade value, and teams are going to hold back their best stuff even for Greinke. Let's not delude ourselves into thinking that the Brewers are going to pick up a ton of impact prospects at the trade deadline if the 'sell'. Why make Dean Taylor type trades just to pick up 'guys'? I'll take my chances on going on a run and stand pat.
  17. The Dodgers are sinking like a bag of bricks. Their lineup is brutal and they have some major issues with their pitching staff. I'll actually be surprised if they are over .500 at the end of the year.
  18. I remember seeing Conway Twitty with the parents at the fair back in the late 70's. Not too many memories about the concert except the fact that it seemed like it took forever.
  19. It's very hard to get your nose in the door these days without elbow rubbing, butt kissing or, ahem, 'networking'. You are learning fast. All that I can say from my experience is that the buddy system is alive and well. I can't remember the last time that my department had a job opening in which someone's friend/former co-worker, etc. didn't get an interview. Often, that person ended up getting the job over someone more qualified, sometimes this was to the detriment of the company. Even if they didn't get the job, the politics involved throw a real wrench in the hiring process.
  20. Last year, everyone complained about the defense, but I think that this year proves that a good bullpen with a bad defense trumps a good defense with a bad bullpen. Nothing worse than a horrible pen in my view. I've got to think with last years bullpen, this team probably has at least half a dozen more wins. With an average bullpen, the 3-5 estimate seems about right.
  21. Macha didn't 'pull' Hoffman either... from what I remember at least. Didn't Hoffman go to him, and ask to be taken from the role.
  22. Has anyone else noticed that Hamilton has been horrible since May? I know that he's had some injury issues, so I wonder if they've been affecting him. I think that any team giving him a huge contract will be taking a major risk. I can't see any scenario in which the Brewers would sign him though.
  23. Well trading someone with a known injury, even a small one, is taboo in MLB. You just don't see GMs hide things like that- certainly not Melvin. Plus, he would have to pass a physical anyhow. It could be something as simple as a blister or a cracked fingernail or something that would heal quickly. Even a small thing like that could be used by a trade suitor to ding his value.
  24. I like HP or Toshiba. Though they last only 2-3 years, they are cheap enough to treat them almost as a disposable item. I'm sure there are choices galore on the net for under $400.
  25. Escobar hasn't been much better than the mess that the Brewers have had this season. My target for next year is Stephen Drew as a J.J. Hardy make-good type guy.
