  1. Pretty sweet pitching matchup... these guys have a combined 414 strikeouts and only 84 walks, a ratio of 4.93-1. That's pretty darned good. ~Bill
  2. 3. When JT Snow and Deivi Cruz hit homers against you in the same game, you know you're not going to win. At least the Giants are going to stay ahead of the Cubs. ~Bill
  4. Keith Ginter owns Barry Bonds. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif ~Bill
  5. I vote Ben Ford for two pitches, then Jeff Bennett for two pitches, and the remaining pitches from Travis Phelps. That'll get 'er done. EDIT: A hanging splitter or slider = boom 700. ~Bill
  6. I wonder if a sports psychologist could help Wes cope with this little (well, ok... big) hurdle he's facing. It doesn't seem like it's a physical thing, at least not in the sense that he loses velocity or movement after 80 or so pitches. He just loses his composure and confidence and looks nervous... it's like he says to himself... OMG OMG OMG I'm almost going to have a quality start WOOOOO HOOOO but don't blow it OMG OMG OMG I'm going to blow it and then I'm going to lose my job OMG OMG OMG ... or something like that. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif In other news, it looks like Bonds will get one more and maybe two more plate appearances. Once again, he'll be leading off... that's three of his first four (only four, probably) plate appearances coming to leadoff an inning. Good job, Brewers. ~Bill
  7. Fact or Fiction: "I respect their opinion," Yost said. "The front office has never, ever, even one time since I've been here, called down and said, 'Do this' or 'Do that.' They haven't even suggested anything." Interesting. ~Bill
  8. They should just use De La Rosa and Hendrickson as "buddies" with Obermueller. Four or five innings of good baseball is valuable... it's like a really good long relief pitcher. If you can get four good innings from Wes and two or three from one of the aforementioned duo (or Liriano, perhaps), then it's just like having a "regular" starter. That's if we don't have a superior option to Wes in the rotation next year, which I hope we do. But if he can be a consistently good pitcher for two-five innings, then he's still going to be pretty valuable. And hopefully he can eventually get over this hump where he gets shelled in the fifth or sixth EVERY TIME, and then he'll be really valuable. Or maybe he won't. I dunno... there's just so much promise there when he pitches well for a few innings in a row that it's disappointing to see him fall apart all the time. ~Bill
  9. That's 'cause he's scared out of his mind. The poor guy looked like he was almost trembling. And there's the limit, huh? Your prediction was one batter too late, Toby. Boo. ~Bill
  10. More good work from Mr. Obermueller. I'd really like to see him have success, but at this point it's just not there yet, at least not on a consistent basis. His stuff is good, speaking particularly of his sinking fastball, and if he can throw strikes and get groundballs, he'll have a long and productive career. That's all in the future, though. Tonight he's just got to get some more outs! ~Bill
  11. Who is this pitcher and what has he done with Wes Obermueller?? It's Roger Clemens, and he ate him. I think. ~Bill
  12. I love the softball shift. Bonds is now 0-for-2, and the Brewers continue to pitch to him. Good job, Ned (and Wes)! ~Bill
  13. Good job by Mr. Obermueller so far. Bonds will now be leading off the inning in his first two plate appearances... that's how it's s'posed to work, no? Branyan reaching base on a ball he fouled off his foot is pretty funny. Ed Rapuano has missed two obvious calls already, but both went the way of the Crew... the Branyan play, and the Obermueller (non-) balk. Good karma, hopefully. Looks like a nice-sized crowd again. Maybe 30k, although it is hard to tell from the TV. ~Bill
  14. Wow... missed it by [...........] that much. I was pretty close. So I lose the Question of the Night game... who wants to take a stab? Post your prediction and the winner gets to be King for a Day (or something like that). ~Bill
  15. 1-2-3 for Obermueller, 1-2-3 for Tomko. Bonds is next. Make yourself a cheese sandwich and join the fun. No sucky game thread tonight... bring your A game. Question of the Night: In what inning, and against what pitcher, and in what game... will Bonds hit 700? I'll take the first inning, against Obermueller, tonight. That means in like 2 minutes. ~Bill
  16. Let's go team. Um, right. ~Bill
  17. Thanks davego, I appreciate it. I just got some nice new antiobiotics and so hopefully I'll be back at 'em soon. Remember, cheese sandwiches and Wes Obermueller tonight at 6:35. We need to channel the spirit of the extra-innings win in Anaheim. Fun will be had by all. Be there. ~Bill
  18. 09/15/2004 - Brewers (Wes O.) vs. Giants (Tomko & Bonds) Last night was fun, if ultimately unsatisfying. Tonight Barry will again go for #700, this time against Wes Obermueller. Sporting a 6.42 ERA, Obermueller has faced 467 batters this season and allowed 14 home runs, a ratio of about one longball every 33 batters. That's not bad, but opposing hitters are batting .303/.360/.510 or an 869 OPS against Obie, or almost exactly the line Jose Guillen is producing in Anaheim (.303/.360/.515, 875 OPS). In other words, when Obie is on the mound the opposing team, pitchers included, become hitters of Guillen's caliber. And that's pretty good... for the hitters, not Wes Obermueller. I'm fighting through a nasty illness, so no game for me tonight. I encourage anyone "on the fence" to head out to Miller Park, though... the Brewers are doing a nice job with their fandemonium thing and seeing the stadium rise to its collective feet when Barry steps to the plate is something to behold. It really is quite an awesome experience, something I won't soon forget even though he didn't go yard. Anyway, that's all I got. If you won't be at MP, be here or be square... 6:35 PM CDT is the first pitch, cheese sandwiches will be served, and you get to see Wes Obermueller. What could be better? ~Bill
  19. 09/14/2004 - Brewers (Davis) vs. Giants (Reuter & Bonds) Early start time tonight... 6:35 CDT. Pre-game show starts at six on FSN for those that won't be in attendance. The best baseball player in the world will go for #700 tonight. And, err, I think Chad Moeller is probably going to catch for the Brewers. Go team. ~Bill
  20. Sheets is at 98 pitches, thanks mostly to his 11 strikeouts. Time to call it a day? EDIT: Yep. Good job, Ned... you might be lacking in many things, but your willingness to manage your pitchers' workloads is not one of them. You da' man. ~Bill
  21. I wonder if we will see one of the Reds position players come in and pitch. Juan Padilla is close enough. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ~Bill
  22. Judging by the size of many of the game threads, I think there's a good chance you were, endaround. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Big Ben has been dealing today. Remember when we were all worried about him regressing back into pre-2004 form? Hopefully those concerns have been answered... he might never pitch as well as he did in the first half, but he's been on fire again for four starts in a row. Today he's allowed just three hits, no walks, and has fanned ten. And he's not done yet. Love is an appropriate emotional response. ~Bill
  23. Boom for Jenks. This is fun! And the Evil-Doers are losing, too. EDIT: And so Todd Van Poppel hits Brady Clark intentionally with a pitch. That's one of those "old school" norms that I just don't understand. The opposing team knocks you around and takes you deep four times, so you hit them? Why don't you hit yourself - you're the one who can't get anybody out. And the Muscle walks. 3-for-3 with 2 HR, a 2B, and a BB. Nice. ~Bill
  24. So JP and Bob both want Branyan back, with JP lobbying pretty hard. I really do think that if he got 500 at-bats, he'd hit 40-50 homers. 3-for-3 with two bombs and a double that Ueck said would have gone in the river if he had elevated it. Beautiful. ~Bill
  25. That sounds about right, DHonks... hopefully new ownership makes that, or even a higher total, a feasible number. Brady Clark has been insane lately... another home run today. He must be eating his Wheaties. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ~Bill
