  1. Let's go team. 2. I know I'm late to this little party, but Ben Grieve did have a helmet on and was "swinging" (not really, just sort of stretching and doing the usual right-before-you-pinch-hit-drill) a bat next to Kieschnick as the ninth started yesterday. I presume they went to Kieschnick when he became the tying run, as has been Nedley's MO all year. Grieve was certainly available and ready to pinch-hit for Magruder, though. ~Bill
  3. And when Obermueller gets lit up like a blunt in Rickey Williams's rumpus room, was Ned actually surprised? That's beautiful. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif The dumbest part is that the justification for bringing back Obermueller was that Matt Wise couldn't pitch today, or at least couldn't pitch enough to start. If that was true, what changed in the one inning that Obermueller pitched? Was that extra 20 minutes of rest critical? If they needed another pitcher in case Wise struggled, that's fine. But why start Obermueller? Leave him in the bullpen and use him if Wise struggles, not the other way around. Just dumb. And those numbers are hilarious and disturbing at the same time, MB. ~Bill
  4. That inning lacked coolness. ~Bill
  5. Ok, this definitely qualifies for "weirdest lineup of 2004". MILWAUKEE FLORIDA AVG HR RBI AVG HR RBI Craig Counsell SS .265 2 19 Juan Pierre CF .313 2 31 Trent Durrington 3B .211 2 2 Luis Castillo 2B .298 2 36 Geoff Jenkins LF .251 17 61 Damion Easley 3B .239 5 21 Ben Grieve RF .267 7 27 Miguel Cabrera LF .317 23 77 Lyle Overbay 1B .324 11 69 Jeff Conine 1B .272 8 49 Bill Hall 2B .263 7 38 Juan Encarnacion RF .233 13 44 Brady Clark CF .271 5 26 Alex Gonzalez SS .233 16 58 Gary Bennett C .190 1 13 Mike Redmond C .245 2 24 Wes Obermueller RHP .381 0 4 Ismael Valdez RHP .171 0 5 (3-5, 6.69) (9-6, 5.53) I thought Brady Clark was the perfect #2 hitter. Why is he batting seventh? ~Bill
  6. 08/07/2004: Brewers (Obermueller) at Marlins (Valdez) Not exactly Johan Santana vs. Tim Hudson, eh? Lineups to come. First pitch shortly after 5PM central time. Go team. ~Bill
  7. But I don't see why you bring the infield in. I hope someone asks Ned about that. Adam McCalvy isn't on this trip, I don't think, so our chances of getting the answer straight from the horse's mouth aren't very high. Yost plays the infield in *a lot*, probably more than most other managers, just from personal observation. I don't know if that's really true, but it sure seems like it. Usually he talks about how we're having trouble scoring runs and he wants to limit the opposing team's runs as much as possible, but that doesn't apply tonight. ~Bill
  8. How many unearned runs in this game? Five, pending any changes in official scoring. ~Bill
  9. "He's as good as there is at what he does. He's the best ever at what he does. He's a weapon. At the end of games, he's a guy that can come in and give you a hit and get something started. That's not an easy job to do." -- Davey Lopes, 02/27/2002 Fear Lenny Harris. ~Bill
  10. Does anybody know the story behind the relief pitchers' new shoes? There are a handful of them that just recently started sporting these reeboks like Luis is wearing... black with the "swoosh"-style Reebok thing. Did the Brewers' sign a contract with Reebok that I didn't know about? Did one of the rookies have to buy everyone new shoes? I don't know why I noticed, but I did. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I hope Vizco is okay... that ball hit him pretty hard in the ribs/back. ~Bill
  11. "The guys have been struggling a little bit at the plate, but the great thing about baseball is that a slump can end at any time. Today our guys went out there, took a good approach, didn't try to do too much, and good things happen. Now we've just got to build on this and keep battling, keep working hard day in and day out, giving it 100%, and good things will happen." -- Nedley Yost I'm going to win. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif EDIT: ja002h is going to win, actually. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ~Bill
  12. Say it with me, folks: Grieve sucks. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ~Bill
  13. Makes sense, deeswan, and it looks like that was the plan. Good job, Nedley. ~Bill
  14. LOL, RoCo... that's great. The funniest part is that I actually *could* picture Big Ben saying that. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif So now he's at 107 pitches. That's got to be enough, doesn't it? ~Bill
  15. Bill, Ben is our horse. I know, that's why I don't want him to get injured. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif It's a tough call. I still don't understand why he's wearing a sweatshirt, BTW. Chad Moeller's injury according to Uecker is a sprained ankle, x-rays negative, and he is listed as day-to-day. That's good news, but it doesn't tell us that much about how long he'll be out. Hopefully not at all! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ~Bill
  16. Great inning, but that's 96 pitches for Big Ben. I know it's a close game and he's pitching well, but if he gets another inning he's going to be well over 100 on a hot/humid day in which he threw 29 pitches in a very high-stress inning. This is a tough call, but I'd opt for removing him now. He *could* pitch another inning or even two, and that might not have any negative effect on him at all, but I've just got to think that this has been an awfully tough outing for him already. What do you guys think? ~Bill
  17. To answer my own questions, I think Sheets threw 29 pitches that inning. He's up to 81 total... that's worrisome given the weather and the number of high-leverage pitches he threw last inning. I hope Nedley takes him out early tonight... one more inning is more than enough. ~Bill
  18. Errors, etc., yada yada yada, but what's up with Sheets? They're not really putting many good swings together against him, so I don't think there's anything wrong. The fact that he's wearing a sweatshirt under his jersey and it's like 300 degrees with 100% humidity has me worried about him, though... I might just take him out right now if I was his manager. I mean, this is the kind of inning/environment that causes injuries. How many pitches has he thrown this inning? ~Bill
  19. Jesus. Helms is playing in at third, and a ball hit like six inches to his right gets by because his reaction time plus range is worse than Grieve's. Ben Sheets should throw a 95mph fastball at Caveman's head. It's way too hot in Miami for our franchise pitcher to be laboring like this for no reason other than our third-baseman's incompetence. ~Bill
  20. LOL, what the heck was that, Wes? Good effort, but not so good on the "pretty" scale. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ~Bill
  21. Gary Bennett is such a gritty team leader. I mean, he's from a different era. He's a hardnosed ballplayer. But his hitting? And his fielding? And his baserunning? Well, not so good. But did I mention he's a gritty team leader? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ~Bill
  22. That was a pretty ugly ankle-turn by Moeller... everybody do whatever it is you do for good luck for him to be okay. The infield dirt at no-one-watches-games-here-park seems to be pretty terrible... Counsell had trouble earlier and Castilla had trouble with it on the very play that sent Moeller out of the game. I'm afraid that even if it is just a sprain, Chad will be out for several days. Especially given that he's a catcher, a DL stint doesn't seem out of the question. Maybe Chris Coste will get a chance? Anyway, that sucked. ~Bill
  23. Lovely defense, wouldn't you say? ~Bill
  24. At least we don't have Juan Encarnacion, right? AVG OBA SLG OPS HR BI ----------------------------------------------- Juan Encarnacion .236 .294 .412 706 13 44 Scott Podsednik .252 .318 .391 709 10 29 ----------------------------------------------- Eek. That's disturbing to look at. ~Bill
