Good thing these meaningless bowl games get the 'best' players playing in them. I realize why they do it, but finish the season at least.

I don't look down on the profession, I look down at most of the teachers. Which is a shame, because I have a ton of respect for the really good ones. Like any job, there are bad people that work there. An odd thing to say regardless. How many teachers do you know? Yes, pay and benefits may have been tweaked a little but by and large you knew what you were getting when you started. So the claim of "I have to work summer because I don't get paid a lot" is exactly the type of whining I'm talking about. I'm pretty sure I didnt whine. I simply responded to your post about how I work year round. You admit pay and benefits have changed, yet we knew what we were getting into? Hardly. I turned down a higher paying job with worse benefits right out of college in part, because of the benefits. "Welcome to the real world" is exactly right. Every other position people work full time all year AND take continuing education courses that are required. (And rarely have any pension at all. I'm curious how you would feel if the company you worked slashed your benefits after 10 years, had you on a pay freeze for 5 years, and changed your payscale? The pension is great, but I also wouldn't mind a match system instead, but I'd have to look into it more. Your comments sound like people I know who think teachers have it great. Why should they get something I dont get!? We just want to be compensated as experts in the field.

Pay schedule has changed multiple times. Benefits have changed twice. I have to work during the summer since I dont get paid a lot. I also have to take classes and training over the summer, but yea, you nailed it. These are the types of responses that I hear often and why the profession is looked down upon.

Or leaving the profession altogether. We had one teacher quit the day before Thanksgiving to take a job elsewhere and another announce he's leaving at the end of the semester. A few other teachers in my school have left the profession in the past two years, but they left at the end of the school year. I'm to the point where I am looking for a new job and would consider leaving mid-year if I found the right job. that's pretty awful, but I understand based on here in AZ. My district pays alright in AZ. We received a whopping 14% raise this year, which brings our average salary to just under $48,000. But we also contribute 11.64% to our pensions (11.94% next year). I don't consider leaving...I enjoy it. This year our Association is really hoping we can get the district to return to a salary schedule with steps. Of course there needs to be money from the legislature/governor. Our district is moving away from steps and lanes into something else. They haven't told us yet, but I've heard we arent going to like it. I imagine it will be based around our SLO and test scores...which is just ridiculous. I can make an easy goal if that's what they want.

I just don't think they will keep it at 4 for much longer. I thought having a one loss Ohio State/(other high profile team with 1 loss) not in the playoff might start the boulder.

My district does not pay out anything upon retiring for the sick days banked up. They also just changed it so we went from full benefits until medicare to like 1,500 a year for 20 years of service. Part of the problem with my district is they are having sub-shortages. I suggested that they change it to PTO so people wouldnt be calling in sick last minute. That way subs can be gotten ahead of time as well. My other suggestion was to earn PTO by not using any sick days for a month/period of time. Hopefully this would get some teachers who are feeling a little crummy to still make it in to work. I think part of my frustration comes from the district continuing to take away from the teachers as opposed to making us feel wanted and as experts in the field. I went into teaching in part of the perks. Sure, who wouldn't. Those perks have changed a massive amount over the 10 years I have been teaching.

I realize that, but every other sport has the same question, doesn't it? I imagine part of that reason is because there is an imbalance of schedules, resources, etc. Part of the reason why I argue for an 8 team tournament is that the bowl season is boring. It is a holiday, sure, but most of the games are just background noise. In my opinion, I think there are between 6-8 teams every year that could possibly be the best team on any given day, but they don't get the same mulligan that other teams get.

I looked at the rest of the bowl schedule, and I would be shocked if many people really got a match-up they wanted. I saw like...2 intriguing match-ups. I would rather watch an underdog team taking on a top team. That is way more interesting to me. That's part of why people like March Madness so much.

Not that it means anything one way or the other, but Auburn was 10.5 point favorite over UCF last year. I imagine part of the massive spread is that UCF lost their starting QB. It would still be big, but probably not as big. And no, I don't think this years UCF team would win against either of the top 4.

My district is awful in that regard. They just took away insurance for retirees upon retiring. I've taught 10 years in this district and if I stay and retire I get 1500 per year for insurance. We get 10 sick days and 1 personal day. We dont earn extra sick or personal days and like I said, once you retire your days are all gone. The funny thing is, we have sub shortages here and I tried to tell them that compensating the sick days would get people to save them. I also brought up the idea of earning extra personal days by not using sick days. My district has really stuck it to the teachers in the last 2 years and it's really frustrating seeing the lack of support from the higher up admins and school board.

Interesting that you bring up Boise when they beat the number 4 team in the BCS back in like...2010? I mean, under this current system that TCU team would have been the 4 seed. Boise beat them that year. Last year UCF beat Auburn...who beat Alabama. You don't think that they should have even had a shot? It really does seem silly that you are so against a system that, to me and so many others, seems much better. EDIT: Paul and I are in the same boat, and he has explained my thoughts clearly as well, so I think I'll just let him keep explaining it.

That's a good question and I don't know the answer. I would guess not. My wife works for Kohl's corporate and they get unlimited sick days. She also gets 5 weeks of vacation with an option to buy 2 more weeks of vacation. I have another friend that can carry over like...5 sick days or something each year. In my district a lot of older(near retirement age) workers end up gifting some of their unused days to people who have medical emergencies, but don't have enough time banked. I know I have my days saved up, but I have to use them for paternity leave come April. I would be curious how paternity leave works at other businesses. My wife gets 8 weeks paid and then has to use her vacation time.

What kept fans interested before there was any national title game at all? They're going to continue to preserve the bowl system while trying to crown a true, deserving national champion based on regular season results, as they should. Letting 8 teams in the playoffs gives undeserving teams a shot. More teams with a shot means more fans staying tuned in...which means more $. I obviously haven't researched anything, so I have nothing to back it up except my own personal experience, but many in my circle have tuned out much of the season since the Badgers have had no shot. Over 13 games and not having an opportunity to play other teams is why I think there should be an 8 team playoff. So, we think the SEC is the top conference which means Alabama is probably the best team from the best conference, but why should't the top teams from the other conferences get a shot at Alabama? They don't have that opportunity during the regular season. Why have playoffs at all? In any sport. Why not just crown the team that had the best regular season...I mean, they were the best the longest. I am sure that crappy Cardinals team didn't 'deserve' a shot, but they went on to win it all. I am sure Loyola from last year didn't 'deserve' a shot, but they made a run.

If nothing else, paul's idea would create more buzz and keep fans interested longer. I tuned out once I knew the Badgers weren't that good and had no shot. If they would have still had a shot at the Big 10 title and a shot at the playoff I would have watched the games until they were out of it. I prefer an 8 team playoff. Otherwise it feels like its the same 4 teams every year(I realize it's slightly different). That's boring.

We are only allowed to bank 100. When teachers are retiring they become sick twice a week since our district gives you no compensation for saving days.

Slots is luck. Is what Schoop did luck? Perhaps. Schoop did have a solid year hitting just a few years ago. I would liken it to playing poker. Yea...I played a hand poorly, but I think I can make that money back and then some. I do realize your point though, and I do agree. I just hated the trade and would like to see it work out better. Or would have LIKED it to work out better.

As someone who hated the trade, I hope they don't cut ties with him. It's only a one year deal and he could reach those gaudy numbers...I guess. Mainly I hope they dont cut ties with him simply because then it REALLY seems like we blew that trade. If he comes back and has a solid year... it wont sting as bad.

Maybe, I've heard people use burger for much longer than 4 months though. Guys playing call of duty have said I just got a 30 burger. 30 kills. That's been happening for over a year.
