  1. Al, Tucker isn't exactly an apples-to-apples comparison. I think Jameer Nelson is a better comparison for Dominic James. Nelson was a late first pick, but that draft was fairly lean after the top 10 guys. Had Nelson been in the 2007 draft he probably would not go in the first round. If anything, this draft is deep, so waiting a year should help.
  2. COOOOP, Call up the horticulture/botany/earth science department at ASU and have them send over a couple of co-eds to help you identify the tree. I'm sure they'd do it for free as part of a learning experience. Hey, a UTO is better than an UDI (Unidentified Drinking Injury).
  3. It also sets up the possibility of a Nuclear Monday, with the chances of Yovani Gallardo debuting in Milwaukee, Manny Parra debuting in Nashville, and Inman starting the Stars' porion of his career all on the same day. "My thesis is complete!!"
  4. Does anyone think Parra has a real shot of joining the Crew's pen sometime this year. Depends on the number of innings he has pitched and what his limit is. If he is under the target limit, I'd say the odds of him being called up in September are about 95%.
  5. 2 across leather seating will be gone. I think they had been going away from that for some time now. When I moved to LA three years ago I flew Midwest one-way from Madison to MKE to LAX because it was the cheapest ticket by $100; I saw why - the flight was half empty and I had a whole row to myself. I was flying in one of their new Boeing 717 aircraft (basically the same as the MD-80 from their takeover of McDonnell-Douglas). And I swear that the row that I had all to myself had three seats - I'm sure it was the 2/3 seating that is/was used on all MD-80s. Granted I was towards the back of the plane (four or five from the end, but I think that was on purpose so I could have the whole row to myself) and didn't notice the front of the plane, so maybe from the emergency exit row forward it was 2/2. But I'm sure it was 2/3. Sad news. I was hoping it would be Jet Blue, because they have no presence in the midwest (Long Beach to Chicago O'Hare, but that's it). But the odds of that were very low because of incompatible fleet (Jet Blue uses Airbus 320s).
  6. Whats worse, is that we've now wasted Villanueva basically for the entire Minnesota series for nothing Any chance Villy and Vargas swap roles until the next off day? Maybe not w/Cappy's tweaked hammie. But with Villy throwing five today and being out for probably the next two days, I think Vargas could stay as the long man until Cappy's next start, or they swap Oxspring or Yo for TGJ on Cappy's next start. The key is going to be Bush's start. If every they needed him to go at least 7, this is it. Who wants to come to San Fran and drink a beer with me? Round's on me! I'm a week too late - I'll be there next week. Don't they play SF next week though? We could watch the game on Tuesday and be the only fans in the bar rooting for the Brewers. Send me an email if you want to meet somewhere.
  7. Berry Weiss is nothing like a true beer, and therefore can't be a happy medium Berry Weiss is a wine cooler. Nothing more. Leinie's is well aware of this, decided to make their own wine cooler and called it a beer so guys wouldn't feel like any less of a man drinking it. Well, you go sit over there with the "guys" and drink your "real" beer; I'll be over here introducing Miller Chill and Berry Weiss (or wine coolers or margartabeers or whatever you want to call them) to the ladies. And when they tell me how much they like it, I'll be asking them if they would like to come back to my place to have some more. Good luck picking up any ladies with your beer breath! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif
  8. But if you want to have beer while at the same time having something that may kind of quench your thirst too, Chill would serve that purpose. Yep. There's times when I want true beer, and times when I want something to quench my thirst (particularly during the summer), and this finds a happy medium. Like Berry Weiss. Funny though - for the person who said they couldn't drink a case of it (I lost the desire to drink mass quantities of beer when I graduated college), I'm not one that can drink mass quantities of true beer; if I'm going to have more than two or three beers I'll need something to quench my thirst somewhere in between. I couldn't drink a lot of Chill either, but if I'm going to have six or more beers I could easily see this as an every-other-beer selection to stay refreshed.
  9. By the way, I put together that Nashville post during the Texas Ranger 9th inning -- did I miss anything? If I could reach through this ethernet cable and fiber optic phone line and smack you I would. Notice how that is in navy so I'm only half kidding...
  10. Methinks Ford's promotion means so long to Anderson Delarosa or Freddy Parejo. Delarosa could go to Helena though, as they will be ready to start soon.
  11. LouisEly, what does behavior have to do with managing people? Are you serious? You are kidding, right? Managing people has everything to do with managing behavior. Pick up any book or take any course in people management. Start with anything by Ferdinand Fournies: Ferdinand Fournies THE TOP 10 REASONS EMPLOYEES DON'T DO WHAT THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO DO: 10. They don't know why they should do it; 9. They don't know how to do it 8. They don't know what they are supposed to do 7. They think your way will not work 6. They think their way is better 5. They think something else is more important 5. They think they are doing it 4. They are punished for doing it 3. They are rewarded for not doing it 2. It's beyond their personal limits 1. No one could do it You reward good production and you don't reward bad production. People aren't dogs. You don't give treats to those that obey you just because they sit when you say. You give incentive to those that are smarter, faster and produce more. No, you reward good intentions/behavior and you punish bad intentions/behavior. Sometimes bad outcomes come from good intentions/behavior, and sometimes good outcomes come from bad intentions/behavior. Yes, you reward those who produce more, but not if they do it unethically or illegally or are a cancer who causes others to reduce their production. And 95% of the time the reason those who produce more do so is because of their behaviors/actions/habits (i.e. what they do), and that is what management is - managing people's actions, not their outcomes. If their actions are in line, the outcomes almost always follow. In my industry there is a growing list of companies and people who have been fined by the government hundreds of millions of dollars because they increased sales as a result of unethical or illegal behavior. That is a list you don't want to be on. Maybe I took your comments too literal. Ah... that's it. You are not taking "behavior" too literal; you are taking too narrow of a definition of it. You are thinking of "behavior" as good or bad, like a child. I am referring to the broader definition of behavior - people's actions, habits, what they do. That, by definition, is behavior.
  12. Aracko - if you read the article, they are moving him because he can't hit. Both his OBP and SLG were under .300 as a pro - and that was in the low minors. A .571 career OPS in the low minors gets you released if you are not a high pick. They are moving him to pitcher because his arm was ranked an 80 on strength. Prince Fielder was rated an 80 on hitting power, and 80 is the maximum score someone can be rated in a category. He was a two way standout (pitching and hitting) who threw 95... so back to pitching. Could still make a heck of a reliever if he can regain and refine his pitching. Frankly between him and that guy Hamilton? a few years back.. I never understood why they tried to be position players because there is always a much greater need for pitching.
  13. BraunsB - if you go back to the original post, the poster said that it was not the fact that this guy lipped back that was bothering him/her. What the poster was really upset about was that he/she vented on another co-worker. You are correct in that you need to handle these situations with tact (even though it is human nature to turn around and give that guy the same attitude he gave you). However, that is not what really was bugging the poster. I agree that the best course of action to make you (the original poster) feel better is to apologize to the person you vented on and explain why. Be the better person. If you apologize, you will feel so much better, and it will not bother you anymore. As for the guy who lipped off to you, if it is your job to monitor that, you did the right thing. If he reacts with that attitude towards you, then you have every right to call the police. The fact is that people like this, like others said, will not change their behavior until they are taught a lesson. I am a manager, and chapter one of Management 101 is that you reward good behavior and you NEVER, EVER reward bad behavior. If you reward bad behavior, or ignore it, it will only encourage them to continue that behavior.
  14. Anybody ready for some Joe Thatcher in Milwaukee after watching Brian Shouse's recent struggles? Wouldn't he have more value that Chris Spurling, for instance? Wouldn't Thatcher have more value than Brian Shouse, for instance?
  15. The Cubs have to be loving their investment in Samardzija so far... not exactly dominating in high A. They spent hundreds of millions in the offseason... and so far nothing to show for it.
  16. On Aug. 9 that season, in the first game of a twilight doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox, Meyer struck out twice in his first three appearances against 26- year-old Roger Clemens, already a two- time Cy Young Award winner. But he redeemed himself leading off the bottom of the ninth by knocking the first pitch he saw - it was a 95-mph Clemens fastball - into the right-field seats to seal a 3-2 Brewers win. I was at that game! Yep, Joey Meyer. Given all of 520 ABs in the majors to prove himself (for those of you complaining that Corey Hart isn't being given enough playing time, think about that). Let's see... we have Joey Meyer, Billy Joe Robidoux, and Steve Stanicek all coming up in the minors... so let's go out and sign Greg Brock!
  17. Yeah, I think it is going after the Corona/Mexican beer market. The beauty of it though is that you don't have to fart around with the lime - it's already in it. Not a big deal if you are out at a bar/restaurant, but if at home or at a friend's house you don't need to get the lime from the grocery store or need a knife to cut it up. Series - I didn't make it down on Saturday. Just Sunday. A friend of mine who was living in Australia made a short-notice stopover in LA for the weekend on his way to Sweden, so I stuck around on Saturday to hang out with him. When did you go to RBL? I was there Sunday after the game. Did you hang around Sunday and if so where did you go?
  18. So I was down in SD last weekend watching the Brewers put out a pathetic three hits against Jake Peavey and the Padres (and the first two of those were bloop hits that, had the fielders been positioned differently, would not have landed darn near making it a no-hitter). Needless to say after the game I needed a beverage. I went to Dick's Last Resort, an old favorite of mine from my time in Chicago, but it was crowded. So a couple doors down 5th St. is the Rockin' Baja Lobster - not a favorite place of mine, but if you had seen the girl minding the beer cooler out on the patio you would have stopped there too. On the side of the cooler/beer stand was a banner for Miller Chill - a "light beer with a hint of lime and salt". I had never seen this before, and couldn't tell if it was a joke or a real beer. So I asked the girl ("Can I ask you a dumb question?...), and sure enough she pulled one out. It has kind of a clearish greenish yellow bottle and says "Miller Chill". On the neck label it says 110 calories and 6.5g carbs (so more than Miller Lite). And it was actually tasty - I feared too much lime or salt but not the case. It was really just a hint of lime and salt that made the beer just a little more refreshing. I'd buy it again. Funny thing is that I haven't seen it anywhere. They didn't have it at BevMo on Monday, and that's saying something, because they have to have over 100 beers there. (I asked the manager and he said they didn't have it, and if presented it "would reject it" because they already have plenty of Miller product.) Have any of you had, seen, or heard of it yet? Or is it just being test-marketed in select locations like San Diego?
  19. How about some pictures of you in one of your suits? When you click on the link, my profile comes up. Click on the red button that says "View Photos". Then look towards the bottom of my picture - you should see three boxes with the numbers 1, 2, and 3 on it. Click on those three boxes to see different pics (including one in a suit). A fourth box has an "X" in it - that will take you out of the pics and back to the profile. Thanks for your vote!
  20. So...that avatar picture isn't you? Brian had that same question (ironically that question was directed at the last person to reply in this post, chkyhks2and0), but a little research on this site will reveal whom my avatar is. Your lucky I know you! Against my better judgment I gave you a 5 And that person chimes in! It takes a special post to get Craig to come out of hiding.
  21. If you click on the link in the original post my profile should come up... it may take a minute, because Esquire loads a video. I just clicked on it and it came up but it took a minute. Thanks for voting!
  22. Thanks to everyone who voted - I'm doing good so far. Unfortunately they extended the contest until 5/30, so that has allowed more people to enter, so I don't like my chances so much. Also, there's a lot of "haters" out there who vote poorly for the other entrants. With one more day of voting left I could really use some more five star votes from the BF.net nation. They have set up the voting to be "Chicago-style" - vote early and often. Another hundred or so votes from you would really help! Thanks again!
  23. I've been to two Brewers games in the last week (Mon 3/21 at LA and Sun 3/27 at SD) in which Gwynn started. I have not seen either Ford or Cain play in person, however on Monday Gwynn hit the third hardest ball of any Brewer (other than Prince's 900 feet worth of HRs) and yesterday Gwynn hit the second hardest ball of any Brewer (next to Jenkins warning track fly). Both were line drives. Gwynn doesn't have an upper cut swing - he has a very level line-drive generating swing. But he hits the ball hard - just not for home runs.
  24. Corey Thurman needs to be promoted. So far this year, 25.2 IP, 19H, 3BB, 31K, 0.86 WHIP, after last year's 140 IP, 129 H, 42 BB, 124K, and 1.22 WHIP as a starter. Hard to believe he is still in AA, but Yo, Z-Jack, Dillard, Oxspring, Balfour, Sarfate and Bray are higher priorities, and Dickey is the designated rotation stooge/rubber arm that saves the rotation from pitching meaningless innings (and Hackman is the closer and Thatcher and Stetter are the lefties, and that makes ten). I had been calling for Thurman to be a replacement for Dessens as the long man. I don't think he could do any worse. IIRC, the Brewers 40 man is still at 37, which leaves room for Thurman to be added without having to remove anyone if indeed the need arises. That being said, I think they would add Thatcher first if they need bullpen help, perhaps Hackman or Bray second, but if they needed a long man in the pen I wouldn't be upset to see Thurman.
  25. I think the setting would lead me to believe it was Walt or even is dad. I don't think it is Walt because Walt's mother is a very successful international executive/lawywer, so I doubt she would allow his funeral to be in that type of neighborhood.
