  1. Thank you again Mr. Briggs for some perspective, and davego - excellent reference. You lose 16 starts in a row and have an ERA over 5.00 and, nothing personal, it's just business. You're a great guy Cappy, but we're not in the business of feel-good stories; we're in the business of winning. And frankly, I and a million other Brewers fans waited too long for this. This and Villy's demotion should have happened a month ago. Or at least have them switch roles and see if it helps either. One need not look any further than Kerry Wood and Mark Prior to see what overuse of a young pitcher does. And as for the future, look no further than Clark & Addison in Chicago - how scary good would the Cubs be this year with a healthy Wood & Prior? Don't you think Cubs fans are steaming about how they were treated by Baker?
  2. Gwynn, Aquino, Spurling, V-Rot, and McClung for sure; Spurling means only one open 40-man slot (unless they move Graffy or Jones to the 60-day), so only one of Bray, Crabbe, Rivera, Dickey, Pettyjohn, Stetter, and Nelson and that probably won't happen until Nashville's season is done (my guess is it's Bray or Crabbe based on need). Long shot for Nix and Anderson, with 6 OFs on the roster with Gwynn, but they're going for it so they may not hold back and bring in the cavalry (I think one of the two will get the call). You never know when a game might go 15 innings, and when the race is this tight you don't want to be caught short-handed. Gwynn, Aquino, Spurling, V-Rot, McClung on 9/1 Bray and Nix when Nashville is done The problem is when you call up that many, it causes a chain reaction to fill out the rosters because every team will be in the playoffs. My guess: -Narron, Gulin, Thurman, Moss, Corporan to Nashville to fill the gaps -Welch, Ryan, Roberts, Cain, Hopf to Huntsville to fill the gaps -Bramhall, Mercedes, Pasma, Goetz, Lucroy fill the gaps in A-ball
  3. Guilford? That's Rockford baby! I didn't need to read the article to figure that out.
  4. 1) Free Steve Bray! B) Andrew Lefave, professional hitter. 3) Brad Nelson has quietly had a decent season, and if he can play a decent 3B it gives me the confidence to give him a shot as a 4th/5th OF and/or utility guy. Particularly if Jenkins is not back, they could use some left-handed power on the team. I don't think he will be a superstar, but you could do a lot worse for a backup OF/1B/3B. Gives you some flexibility in PH/double-switch situations.
  5. Well, for about a month now there have been two types of posters - those expressing concerns about the direction the team has been heading, and those who have responded with "the sky is falling, the sky is falling!" Well, has the sky fallen yet? Sorry optimists, but the 800lb gorilla in the room that you've been ignoring for the past month and a half is right in your face and has a grip around your throat. The time to right the ship was weeks ago. They can't seem to give up less than 8 runs a game, so for all the accolades that people bestow upon Maddux, he better get things figured out in a hurry.
  6. Yep - Bray can fill Spurling's role in September. Neither he nor Hackman could be any worse than Spurling and Villy have been lately. And they do need an extra bat for when Prince serves his suspension, particularly a left-handed one. And it is after July 31st, so aquiring a decent bat at this point is going to be extremely difficult, so Gross is the best if not only option. Hopefully Prince can appeal it out until September 1st so they can call up a couple of extra bats and not be short-handed.
  7. Let's not jump to too many conclusions. Brian Adams hasn't worked for the WWE since 2001. A lot can happen in six years. For example - depression (from no longer being able to wrestle or box, or family/marital problems, etc.), which leads to drug/alcohol use or poor diet/exercise habits... let's not make any accusations until details come out.
  8. Another wrestler dead before the age of 50 - Brian Adams, aka "Crush", dead at 44: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/more/08/13/wrestler.ap/index.html
  9. Not what he once was, and I doubt he is better than Dillon at this point, but I think he would make a decent AAA pickup as insurance in case of any other injuries, given that he can play a multitude of positions and has always been good at drawing walks (almost every year his OBP is about .100 higher than his BA). Also would provide a nice boost for Nashville in their playoff run.
  10. You need something like 3.1 plate appearances for every game played to qualify for the batting title, so what splitter is referring to is that after 116 games, 360 plate appearances are needed to qualify at this point. By the end of the year it will be much higher. If Braun averages 4.5 plate appearances per game the rest of the way out, he will come very close to qualifying.
  11. Well, I've tried this twice before and someone's been able to nail it, so here goes... Over the last six months or so I've heard several DJs during their mix play either a cover of or just a sample from Kim Carnes' "Bette Davis Eyes". I've searched many sources and haven't been able to find out who is doing that cover or sampling it. Then I was in San Francisco on Wednesday evening, and the DJ at the bar I was at played it; I asked him who did it and he said Fergie(???). Yeah, that Fergie. Well... I checked every track on Fergie's album, at least the 30 second clips that are available on the web, and couldn't find anything with that sample in it. I've checked music download sites and resources, and no luck. Unless it was a rare "mash-up" (checked some of those sites too), I haven't been able to find it on anything available to the public. But I've heard at least 3 or 4 DJs utilize it in the last six months. Anyone know of whom the artist is that is covering or just using a sample of Bette Davis Eyes? A link to an album or download would be great. Thanks in advance. (added tag --1992)
  12. .685 OPS in June, .559 OPS in July, .633 OPS in August so far... I'll take the larger sample then the last 10 games. Let's face it, Weeks, Hardy, and Jenkins have been stinking up the joint the last couple of months. Counsell has out OPS'd and OBP's Hardy the last two months, so I could definitely buy giving Hardy a few more days off (but I am NOT calling for Counsell to be the starter).
  13. I'd guess Cirillo would be pretty close to as good or better than Dillon for the rest of the year. A 37-year-old with a .327 OBP and a .386 SLG who can't play everyday... meh. I'll take my chances with the guy with the 1.010 OPS in AAA, even if he is 32. Even if their production would be the same through the rest of the season, the upside with Dillon is far better and it can reap future benefits in that it could entice better minor league free agents to sign with the Brewers, because it shows that if you have a great season and the opportunity becomes available there is a chance you will get rewarded. Besides, I'm pretty sure that the move was made before Cirillo was put through waivers, so at that point there was no going back.
  14. I just hope its not optioning... Villanueva. For those who have not been watching, Villy in the month of July had a 6.75 ERA with 10 walks and 15 hits in 17.1 innings, and since the All-Star break has a 9.00 ERA with 9 walks and 9 hits in 11 IP. I'm all for sending him to the DL and bringing Gross back up. He has not been good at all lately. The runs Spurling gave up on Thursday didn't mean a darn thing since they were already down 8-3, and lost 12-4. His other bad outing was in garbage time too, in a game they lost 8-0 and got 4 hits. When the game has been on the line lately, Spurling has come through; CV has not. And I hope R.A. Dickey is getting paid a boatload of money for all of the innings he has been eating at AAA. Innings at AAA are just as taxing as they are in the big leagues, and having a guy like Dickey (or Fernandez last year) is just invaluable.
  15. Considering his line so far this year has been .261/.327/.386, he hasn't exactly earned a whole lot of respect. Not as bad as Punto, but not real good either.
  16. In case anyone was wondering, Gross was sent down 7/21, and Gwynn on 7/25. My guess is that Dillon is getting a few days at the ML level as a bit of a reward, but ultimately as a place-holder for one of these two for a few days. Little late on that one BJ: Just call me Magic 8-ball. (edit: repaired LE's link --1992 http://static.yuku.com/v2//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/smile.gif)
  17. The problem is, it's not simple to decide when a player is TOO hurt to justify playing him. Players play hurt all the time and it hurts their production, to a certain degree. They are allowed to continue to play if their lowered production is still better than the alternative and/or their health is expected to improve. OK Russ, then you tell us - what is the threshold for Weeks at which it justifies benching him? What stats do you need to see to say that he is not the best option right now? .600 OPS since May 1st... what do you need to see? .550OPS? .500OPS? At what point, Russ, is Graffy the better option for right now? You are the stats guru - please be specific with what stats you need to see to justify benching Weeks for the time being.
  18. Too bad we traded for Linebrink, as it's not like we need the bullpen help. The problem is that Ned took Linebrink out because he has to use his formula. Maybe Ned should try something different.
  19. Robert Hinton's miserable season continues -- has any top prospect taken a harder tumble in 2007? He was a 40th round pick in '03, had barely more than a K per inning in A+ and A ball, a mediocre 1.28 WHIP last year for a very pitching-friendly park and league, and did nothing in Helena. He had a very good WHIP in WV, but that's low A ball - nothing to get excited about. Taking everything into consideration... was he ever really a "top prospect" to begin with?
  20. Platooning Russ and Cirillo at 3rd would probably give them a pretty cost-effective and good 3rd baseman. Somewhere from two years ago there has to be about a 23 page thread discussing this exact sentence for the Brewers.
  21. Day game on channel 658 outside Milwaukee Not here in LA. "This program is not available in your area."
  22. People here really dislike Yost's use of the pen, and more specifically using inferior relievers in tough situations, so there should be relief that those inferior options are being replaced by better ones. Well said Peavey. Less inferior relievers = more success in close games. Towers told The Associated Press that Thatcher was the player they were after. ?Thatcher is the one guy we hope will help us,? he said in an AP story. ?It?s an acquisition similar to the one we made last year when we got Cla Meredith. [Thatcher] hasn?t had a chance yet, but has a tremendous strikeout-to-walk ratio and gets left-handers and right-handers out. I find this statement, in particular the words "the one guy", by Towers to be very, very interesting. To me this connotates that he may view Thatcher to have more ML potential than Inman. Before you laugh/flame me too much, consider this: had he said "a guy", that would lead me to believe that he considers the other guys to have legit ML potential. But saying "the one guy" in reference to the trade... He could mean "the one guy who will help us this year", but to me this is a very interesting choice of words.
  23. When you also consider that the Brewers will drop their 13th pitcher soon, there could be some surprising roster moves coming up at AAA. The Brewers dropping their 13th pitcher won't cause Nashville to release anyone, as it will probably be Parra down and Gross back up since MKE only has 4 OFs right now. (Depending on when - if they make the change before Gross' mandatory time in AAA is up it could be V-Rot, NIx, or Dillon up for a couple of days until Gross can come back up.) Unless by "surprising" you mean V-Rot, Nix, or Dillon being called up. If anyone is released, my bet is that it is Charles Thomas or Jose Macias, but I'd think they could find a creative way to put someone on the DL first. They could easily move Salas or DiFelice back down to AA as well. One thing that is interesting that I just noticed - every one of Nashville's OFs bats left-handed.
  24. Welch Flirts with Perfection That's my boy! THAT'S MY BOY!!! I wonder if the error, which ruined the perfect game, distracted him and led to the double to the next batter. It's a shame when a perfect game so late is ruined by an error before a hit or even a walk.
  25. I hope that the people in charge of news departments take a look at how they cover these types of events. I doubt this will change anything, but it's stupid to risk lives for something so trivial as a police change for ratings. My thoughts exactly. Long ago the news deteriorated from being about reporting the news to being about whatever draws ratings, and thus, advertising dollars. Like And That said, I can't say much more without getting political, however I find it hypocritical whenever the media criticizes anyone or anything for being profit motivated. sensationalism and reality based TV have much more to do with the pilots being there than the chase. If there weren't ratings involved, every local new copter wouldn't have been in the air. Spot-on. Let me pay sympathies to the families of all that died in this needless, vouyerstic debacle. Just... absolutely needless. Amen. And because of that, I refuse to watch the footage. I will not contribute to this desire to show stuff as despicable as this just to get ratings.
