  1. ... the Boston Red Sox Right now the Red Sox only have one catcher on the roster in Jason Varitek. They also lost their SS Alex Gonzales in free agency. They supposedly are on the verge of losing Man-Ram. And while they signed J.D. Drew, they signed him to play CF, so if Ramirez is shipped out they need another OF. And I don't know if they are ready to turn 2B or SS over to Dustin Pedoria. Brewers sign Graffy and get his permission to trade to Boston (I don't think he will mind being traded to Boston to be their starting 2B) along with Miller and Jenkins for CoCo Crisp and a young pitcher (maybe Lester or Pauley). It might take Hardy instead of or in addition to Graffy to get Lester. I'm not sure of the exact combination of players, but these two teams match up well in terms of needs. It also depends on whether Boston resigns Trot Nixon, but he has steadily declined the last four seasons and hasn't been healthy enough to stay on the field, so they may not want him back at $7.5M+ or whatever they would have to resign him for. It also wouldn't surprise me to see Boston sign Graffy at the last minute and give MIL the comp picks.

  3. I know that bandwidth costs $$, however I think we need to address the issue of locking threads that contain links to articles in other threads. This may not be the appropriate forum, but I think some folks are getting a little too picky about which ones to lock, and some folks need to be a little more descriptive about the contents of their thread in the title of the thread. Example - the thread with the link to the article in the USA Today previewing the Brewers 2007 season. It was locked because it was previously linked in this thread entitled "Some Brewers News". First, that is perhaps the most generic thread title I've ever read, and honestly, if the title of the thread does not interest me, I don't read it. Second, the first post in the thread was about Tony Graffanino and Geoff Jenkins (so put that in the title!), so even if I did open the thread, I would have read no further than this post, especially to page 2 where the link was posted. Third, the link had nothing to do with the original post, so it should have been put in a separate thread on it's own with a description that somehow references the "USA Today". Brewerfan.net Law: 1) Please be somewhat descriptive in the title of your new threads as to the content 2) If your post has nothing to do with the original post in the thread, start a new thread with it 3) Let's be a little more lenient with locking threads, especially when the original subject is buried in another thread about something completely different Sorry for the rant. Have a good day.
  4. IIRC, Brazelton was a former top pick (one of the first three taken in that draft), as was Eric Munson. There's lots of names out there. I second the nominations of JR House, Bubba Crosby, and Restovich. The Brewers have nothing in the system outside of A-ball for catchers, so as many House/Closser/Munson's they can sign the better. Ken Harvey would be a nice replacement for Koonce at 1B. Wunsch & VDLS would provide LH bullpen insurance.
  5. I'd venture to say that not too many Americans would know what to do at a place like this, much less young Latin players. I know I'd be lost. 'Zactly. Why does it have to be all Latin players? I grew up in a small town in rural WI, and I sure as hell was never taught any of this.
  6. Mike Loverude Hey SoCal, that sounds like a stage name for someone who "works in the valley" if you know what I mean... Great job guys on the roundtable. I understand where you mentioned that your 1st & 2nd teams were based on production, not prospect status, but two questions/observations on my part: 1) Koonce & Alonso at 1B - if these are your top performing 1B in the minors, it means you're pretty thin in that department. But then again, considering your MLB 1B is one Prince Fielder, who isn't going anywhere anytime soon, it is definitely your position of least need. Any consideration of Chris Errecart here? I would have put Errecart over Chapman for OF also, but I can understand the Chapman selection. B) Thatcher was very deserving for the bullpen, and Patrick Ryan did very well, but Steve Bray would've been my pick for the 2nd team, given he did it at a higher level (AA & AAA) and Ryan, at 23, is no spring chicken in low-A.
  7. Thurman, Valentine, and Lehr definitely, as I believe they are people who could still contribute at the ML level. (I say that of Lehr because he has been much better as a starter than a reliever, yet he hasn't been given a chance as a starter in the bigs.) I think Thurman is a dark-horse candidate to make the club as a long reliever should Helling and Gonzales not be retained. He showed promise before injury derailed his career. Fernandez (because he alone can save wear and tear on an entire pitching staff), Zumwalt, and Hackman would be luxuries to keep around also. Abernathy would be nice, but I think he was disappointed that he didn't get a shot when they traded for Bell and Graffanino, so I think he will decline any offer to come back.
  8. Lehr has not been bad at all as a starter in AAA... maybe he has a better mental mindset/more focus as a starter than as a reliever. I wouldn't be opposed to giving him another shot as a starter (but not a reliever).
  9. By the way, no Stars made the Southern League post-season All-Star team... Not entirely surprising, as most of the "stars" (pardon the pun) of that team were either called up to (Yo, Braun, Parra, Katin) or called up from (Villanueva, Anderson, Bray) Huntsville midway through the season. It is a bit suprising that Anderson and Corey Thurman, who had a great season in every department except for wins/losses/run support, were not named to the team.

  11. Here's 51-60: So you're saying there's a chance... (for David Welch)
  12. I think your top six are pretty close, but the rest I have to disagree with you a little Pogo. I'd flip Villanueva and Jackson, but that's splitting hairs. I'd replace Fermaint & Gillespie with Gwynn and Hammond, but I give a lot more weight to AA & AAA performance. Nothing against those guys, but Fermaint has been slumping the last few months, and I don't get excited about college hitters tearing up Rookie ball. Same w/Rogers & Jeffress - I've seen too many guys flame out in AA & AAA, so they have to be VERY impressive for me to put anyone in low-A or rookie ball in my top 10. Next 10 - Rogers, Jeffress, Sarfate, Gillespie, Parra, Fermaint, Irribarren, V-Rot, Jones, Moss (there HAS to be someone better than him to put at #20)
  13. Gwynn goes yard two nights in a row. No power you say? Of course they had to point out that Drew Anderson was the lone starter who didn't get a hit, but he did get an RBI. And will somebody please talk to Brewers brass and find out what the heck Joe Thatcher is still doing in A+ ball? He could be another Jack Krawczyck (mentioned in my friend Steve Sullivan's book "Talking Baseball Amongst Friends), but for crying out loud, the dude's dominating A-ball. Move him up and let's see what he can do.
  14. Al, nobody is proclaiming Drew Anderson to be the next Ken Griffey Jr.; what we are saying is that it is very possible that he could have a Mark Sweeney, 5th OF/LH PH specialist career (and at a fraction of the salary that Sweeney and Lenny Harris and the like command, leaving that money to put towards other players). Plus, unlike Sweeney, he's not a plodder as he has recorded 18 steals so far this season on top of 19 last year (plus hit for a bunt single today), so he has the wheels to cover some ground in the OF even though he may not have the strongest arm. At this point, it's much more likely that he will see Milwaukee at some point in the future than Krynzel or Steve Moss. That may not be an apples-to-apples comparison, as he is a corner OF and they are CF's, but his OPS is almost .100 higher than Moss at AA, and Krynzel is having an atrocious season in AAA.

  16. After the home plate umpire Dan Oliver left in the seventh inning, his partner Tim Bretzke took over behind home plate, Delmarva pitcher Josh Potter became the third base umpire and Delmarva outfielder Danny Figueroa became the first base umpire. Wow. You would have thought they would have pulled guys out of the stands before they would have allowed players from the home team to umpire. But it is a game of integrity, and if they compromised their integrity their names would be soiled forever. The fact that the Power lost by nine though says that it didn't make much of a difference.
  17. is Ryan Crew officially an outfielder now? Well, when your infield is Heether-Escobar-Irribaren, who is he going to replace? I know some will argue that he is more of a prospect than Heether at this point, but I don't think the Brewers are ready to give up on Heether just yet.
  18. According to the box score, Drew Anderson (ours) went yard off of Homer Bailey in the 2nd inning, but no mention of it in any of the recaps. Were they confusing it with the other Drew Anderson's HR, or is our Drew Anderson still not getting any love?
  19. Looks like Errecart's found his mojo. He's been on quite a tear the last 2-3 weeks. Hopefully Clem will soon follow suit.
  20. this guy is regarded as one of the fastest players in the minors - he has the tools But the thing is, baseball is perhaps the one sport where being ultra athletic and "toolsy" won't get you anywhere. The bottom line is that you have to hit the ball on offense and get people out on defense; in order to get to the majors you have to do one of those really, really well. (Where is that five-tool Guerrero kid they signed a few years back?) This isn't football or basketball where athleticism can dominate; this is baseball, where skill dominates. Just look at David Wells, John Kruk, etc.
  21. Our minor league pitching blows my mind. Wasn't too long ago we left off the words "my mind". Still no sign of Drew Anderson in Huntsville... anybody?
  22. Tonight is the second game in a row that Cole Gillespie isn't in the lineup. I feel I missed something... I haven't seen Drew Anderson's name in the box score in a few days also. Did we miss something there too?
  23. Nice to see Errecart's two dingers tonight. He's been heating up lately - hopefully the last week or so has been a sign that he's starting to find his mojo again. Great outing by Parillo too. Hopefully the bad start in West Virginia was a result of being hurt, and hopefully he's starting to find his mojo again also.
  24. 36000+ fans at SF tonight. Most of them probably disappointed. But not this guy!!
  25. Symbolic passing of the torch with first rounder Jeremy Jeffress taking over for first rounder Ben Sheets; Dewon Brazelton was the Padres' starter Anyone else find it odd that Jeffress, Sheets, and first rounder and #3 overall pick Brazelton all pitched in the same Arizona rookie league game?
