    yeah, in general the Brewers seem to stink at challenging ball/strike calls when they're hitting this season...way too many pitches they opt not to challenge when they still have two to burn as games move along

    I agree with this sentiment 95% of the time.....but in this particular case, a 0.5 season of one of the best 2 pitchers in baseball when he's healthy is worth giving up a volume-based prospect haul if: 1 - Skubal is healthy post surgery and has no limitations on innings the rest of the stretch as he gets himself ready to chase a title and free agent payday 2 - the CBA strife doesn't appear to be headed towards a resolution before impacting the 2027 season 3 - the package the Brewers assemble for Skubal could include 1 young MLB arm that Skubal would naturally need to replace on the 40 man (Gasser, Sproat, Henderson, Crow) plus an array of younger prospects who may be positionally blocked by current core Brewer players or more touted prospects. Many of those prospects will need to be dealt in the coming years to avoid losing them in the rule 5 draft (assuming that element remains in the new CBA, whenever that is signed). The Brewers system is as deeply layered in talent as it's ever been, IMO - now is the time to make a splash that could turn their playoff rotation into a monster against anyone, especially since at the moment the Brewers are leaning on younger arms who may need innings restrictions/extra rest so they're as strong as possible in the postseason.

    I think the one way this team could be viewed as a postseason favorite over the LAD is if they went bonkers at the deadline and picked up in impact starter and closer to set up their rotation and bullpen to be nails. That would mean the LAD would also lose out on said impact starter/bullpen piece when their pitching injuries at the moment are their biggest weakness. I wouldn't mind seemingly overpaying in terms of prospect value this year of all years - given the fact that the economic landscape in baseball is likely to change in the next CBA, which may also include a lost season in 2027 if owners/MLBPA don't figure out things with the right mix of full broadcast revenue sharing paired with reasonable salary floor/cap ranges. Go get Skubal (assuming good health) and Chapman, win a World Series, and restock the system as needed once you know what you will need to do with Contreras/Turang and plenty of other young MLB talent/remaining prospects under a new CBA. There would need to be a few untouchables in the system, but the Brewers have the ammo to make those trades happen when the Tigers and Red Sox are ready to sell.

    At some point the projection systems need to add a BRZ factor that takes their output for Brewer wins and just multiplies it by 1.1 to get closer to the actual number of wins the Brewers wind up with.

    I was bullish on Coun$ell not seeing the end of his Cub contract before he would get fired, mainly because i thought their front office was overrated and would eventually need to throw someone off the cliff when their roster decisions never amounted to a clear division-winning roster despite their enormous financial advantages over the rest of the NL Central... Now I'm convinced CC is going to be canned before the end of this season. I dont think he ever really won their fanbase over - but I think he has certainly lost them at this point.

    What the Brewers have done is not rely on a "wave" of prospects opening a window of mlb success - they have a steady stream of talent at all levels and continue to add more to the system every year. They are doing everything right as a small market wanting to contend within this godforsaken economic system that is far from even.

    To also be fair, missing Koenig, not having Priester thus far, and having a sort of shell of Woodruff to start the year, plus seeing one of their other primary late inning leftys in Zerba blow out his elbow (likely another WBC casualty) on top of aforementioned issues with Chourio, Vaughn, and Yelich more than equal any injuries the Cubs have sustained thus far. Cade Horton's injury could be seen 10 miles away coming into this year after how much he pitched for the Cubs last season compared to prior years. Same song and dance for Steele tearing his elbow early last season after being ridden to hard in 2024. To me, the reason the Brewers are better than the Cubs despite those long winning streaks in the W/L column is depth. The Brewers, despite the low payroll compared to the Northsiders, have an unbelievable amount of depth in their organization. The Cubs are taking an all hands on deck approach to their pitching staff after losing Horton and Steele having a setback - meanwhile the Brewers have also missed two of their 5 perceived opening day rotation options and still have the luxury of shuttling Crow and Gasser between AAA and Milwaukee to give their other young starters an extra day here and there to manage their workload so they're not as burned out down the stretch.

    Watched the game with a college buddy Cub fan who is reasonably knowledgeable (ie, not a Cob fanboy)... "Where the hell did they get Drohan from?" Me: "Boston - for Caleb Durbin, Monasterio, and a comp pick" Him: "wow what a steal - is he a free agent after this year?" Me: "he is a rookie" Him: "****" Me: "you know, the Brewers also got Harrison in that trade and have him through at least 2030, right?" Him, while checking stats on Harrison : "you're kidding, right!?!?" Me: "at least the Cubs dont have to face him tomorrow - good luck against Miz though" Him: "I wish the Brewers stayed in the AL"
