Ortiz and Matos cannot be long for this roster once Chourio is back healthy and one of the 85 brewer middle infield prospects in AA and AAA get off to a good start. I can live with Ortiz in the lineup because of his defense....but at some point once you've got better all-around young players capable of being an asset offensively at SS, you've got to get Ortiz off this roster - especially because he's got minor league options left.

Maybe it also has something to do with the fact China makes almost 80% of the world's EV batteries, they control a large percentage of the globe's developed mining reserves of materials needed to manufacture said batteries with next to no environmental regulatory burdens, and they are much more dependent on foreign oil than the United States.

Maybe he's just not that good - pitched well enough for a godawful team last year to make the Rule V pick work out...but he struggled down the stretch after that workload jumped well over what his injury history allowed for in the minors. Wouldn't surprise me if he's got an arm issue at the moment, either. -

Impossible to say for sure....but frankly, yes. Horton has already had 1 TJ surgery while in college, and his workload last year totaled almost 150 IP. He never came close to 100 IP in either 2023 or 2024. -

He's had it with the Brewers for years - and quite frankly I don't think there's anyone in the organization that cares....even his little brother. It's no surprise to me that among the NL Central clubs that Contreras would've gotten the majority of his career plate appearances against since he's spent most of his career playing in that division, the Brewers have held him to the lowest OPS. The Brewers have faced him the most, so they've hit him the most. You need to pitch a hitter inside who essentially sets up in the box with his hands on the inside corner - and that isn't just inside strikes because that is Contreras' happy zone. If he doesn't get himself out of the way on pitches in off the plate, getting hit is his problem.

Early season velo is often a tick low - temps, still building up arm strength, etc all play a factor. It's barely April, I'm not concerned with 1-2% velo dips to start a year out. I think one issue Megill is going to run into is the ABS impact on his curveball - As a pitcher, he's at his best when he's at the top of the zone with his heater, and at the bottom of the zone with his curve. Multiple times in save/late game situations he's already had called strikes on curveballs wind up being overturned because they were fractions of inches below the zone. His pitch mix lies on the upper and lower extremities of the zone, and hitters can adjust their game plans to just not be aggressive early in counts in hopes he's not able to find the zone enough to put them in a hole.

Exactly - Chourio actually appeared in more games even this winter in the Venezuelan winter league than during the WBC....which essentially just shortened the number of spring training plate appearances he would've gotten, likely against more erratic pitching than what the WBC had. Baseball players get hurt playing baseball sometimes.

I dont love this extended outing by Ashby in game 1...kind of feels like youre willing to let them back in the game with Ashby being erratic today. Shut the door here and get the game 1 win

I think both Ashby and Zerpa have the stuff to get righties out just fine...and Koenig is right there, too. None of those three guys would qualify as situational lefties where a manager should start sweating if the opponent runs a few righties in a row to face them. Hall is more of a swing guy - and I'd expect him to be the arm that gets switched out with a righty coming up from AAA if things get too lefty heavy with the grind.

I'm disappointed this team isn't going to have the run differential and pythag vs actual W/L record strawmans for Cub fans to spend the season confidently stating why the Brewers arent as good as their record. I'm sure Cub fans will find other reasons, maybe team payroll difference to spend the summer acting high and mighty while looking at that yellow Brewer flag atop the NL Central on Wrigley's center field scoreboard. This team is 1 pitch away from being 6-0 and looks every bit the part despite two of their best hitters and 1 of their top 5 starters being out injured. Just give Murph manager of the year again already!

All kidding/ridicule aside, that was a brutal shot that CB just took right to the face. Sincerely hope he's ok and glad for his sake that he's not still behind the plate. Almost positive he just got concussed.

I joked that the over/under for number of pitches thrown before the first challenge today should be set at 3... I think the better question is regardless of the number of challenges, will either team wind up being wrong twice before the game ends?

I think there are quite a few "late bloomer" type players scattered across MLB who were impacted by sporadic development time early in their pro careers due to COVID (no minor league season in 2020 and a severely hampered instructional period between 2020-2021) - both collegiate and high school draftees. Wiemer fits that bill moreso than Mitchell because I think Mitchell's is more injury-related. But Mitchell got drafted in 2020 after an abbreviated collegiate season, followed by no organized instructionals/minor league development until a delayed start in 2021.

I'd rather have Mitchell starting in center while Chourio is on the IL than Perkins - and frankly I'd rather have Lockridge starting there against a lefty than Perkins, too. Probably why Perkins started the year in AAA and not Mitchell. Burning Perkins' option upfront for the year sets the stage for a rotating cluster of 4th/5th OFs once Chourio does come back in a few weeks - and honestly the Brewers may have been thinking to use Perkins' option instead of burning one for Mitchell at the start of the year assuming Mitchell is more likely to get injured and go on the IL than Perkins. Of those 3, I'd say Mitchell still has the best offensive upside should he stay healthy and get regular MLB at bats. I don't think anyone views him as a developmental prospect anymore as much as he's been an injury-plagued enigma who could still be a late bloomer if health cooperates. He's capable of a few monster 30/30 seasons with great plate discipline and GG caliber defense in center field even with high strikeout totals.

I think that is the nuance though - only challenge the blatantly bad calls and the ump would need to keep swallowing his pride when they are steadily overturned. ABS is designed for a CB Buckner game not to decide who wins and loses a ballgame - particularly with umps known to have inconsistent zones with some bad misses, players shouldn't be challenging ball/strike calls that are borderline early in the games.

I think Miz pitching to contact is always going to be a problem, moreso because hitters aren't going to hold up their end of the bargain and actually hit his stuff even when he's pounding the strike zone. Get us through 5-6 IP with around 10Ks and limit walks, and let's win the series!

Rasmussen's whole issue is never being able to stay healthy. He's the Garrett Mitchell of pitchers. Anytime you land your everyday SS for 3.5 years in his prime for a talented but oft-injured arm, you make that trade - especially from a Brewer's organization who knows how to develop and acquire pitching.

As this new world of ABS evolves, I think at some point we are going to see umps tossing players/coaches and perhaps even fans if they start getting chirped for missed calls. Already has been a few instances of umps getting noticeably frustrated by challenges.

Zerpa looks to be a massive addition to this year's pen. Love his pitch mix and it's decent against righties, too.
