  1. So whoever wins tomorrow in the AFC should open as at least a 10 point favorite next weekend. My did the titans lay an egg
  2. wishful thinking on my part, I'm sure....but I recall the Packers put Z. Smith at a MLB position at times last season - particularly when they were looking to beef up their MLB spot against the run and were trying to keep P. Smith and Gary on the field. I think he also played some interior line or blitzed from a MLB position on passing downs, too. Wondering if we wind up seeing a similar alignment when the Packers may be in nickel. Also, the thought of rushing the 5 of Gary, P. Smith, Clark, Z.Smith, and Mercilus that has Campbell, Stokes, Douglas, Alexander, Amos, and Savage in coverage behind it on obvious passing downs gives me warm fuzzies even if it's presently a pipe dream.
  3. I think when you have Rodgers, who can manage drives to eat clock at end of the 1st half or run a 2 minute drill with next to no time to try and get some points, getting the ball to start the 2nd half is an advantage for the Packers. It winds up giving them at least one extra possession than their opponent. I'd rather 49ers start with the ball with an amped crowd and fired up defense to start the game and hope they can keep the 49ers off the scoreboard. I think the cold impacts a defense more (particularly a team that isn't acclimated), so start san fran's on the sideline to let Warner's ankle cool down.
  4. With the exception of Bakh, who basically hasn't played all season and may not play Saturday, I think the current Packers O-line are all better and more physical run blockers than pass blockers. Not to say they stink at pass blocking, just that they are physical in the trenches. The interior of the Packers' line has a nasty streak about them. That extends to TE's (Lewis in particular) and WRs. Defensively might be a different story as an entire unit - guys like Amos and Savage aren't considered physical safeties and even Campbell isn't really a MLB thumper - but I don't think anyone can say guys like Clark, Gary, and P. Smith aren't physical at the point of attack
  5. That's garbage if you look at what the Packers do offensively. Just because they actually have a quartback that can move the ball at will passing it doesn't mean the whole team is soft. This will be one of those horrible hot takes that get no pushback after the game when GB winds up with more rushing yards for the game than the 49ers.
  6. I understand Alexander being questionable simply because he hasn't played at all since his shoulder injury in early fall and probably hasn't had much tackling contact in any practices he's participated in. With him I think it's not even a question of conditioning, it's whether he has to come off the field dragging his shoulder the first time he has to try and bring down a tight end short of a 1st down in a game. I'd imagine he suits up and plays, but probably in dime/nickel package scenarios that aren't as likely to be running plays where he'd be taking on blockers should he line up in the slot. With Bakh, it's all about whether the knee is healthy enough to make it through a game without severely impacting Bakh's performance or swelling up so much the following day that he's back in the operating room to drain fluid - missing practice days that are glorified walk-throughs is not a good omen they are confident he can play a bunch of snaps on consecutive weeks.
  7. I was at that game. We didn't have enough healthy LBs to even field a defense by halftime that day. I remember one of our OLB practically dragging one leg while trying to catch CK at the end. Most of my anger that day was directed at Eric Walden for crashing down on the fake and not holding the edge. I was kind of drunk at the time so I'm not sure if that was totally accurate or not but seems likely I recall Shields had a pick 6 right away in that game, too - then it was a clinic on how not to defend the read option and play man coverage against a quarterback who frankly wanted to run every time he dropped back and saw the pocket instantly collapse from one side or the other. OLBs were atrocious in that game.
  8. Bakhtiari's going to need another knee surgery this offseason, isn't he....call it load management all they want, best case scenario is he's got a recurring problem managing fluid going back into that knee any time he stresses it. And we're over a full calendar year from his ACL tear and repair. Hoping he can manage to get on the field and be effective during this playoff run and he's also able to get himself right headed into training camp next summer over the offseason.
  9. The 49ers have such a QB, though. Lance's only positive offensive output throwing the football in a couple starts came this season against the Texans. If he is on the field for a ton of the game in passing situations where his scrambling ability presents a threat, GB's defense can make the adjustment in coverage and pass rush to force him into making throws to consistently move the chains - something Lance isn't ready to do. I think Packer fans have too much PTSD with Kaepernick running roughshod over an unprepared and bad Packer defense in that 2013 divisional round in San Fran. I actually think there's smoke to Jimmy G. not being close to 100% with the sprained throwing shoulder and thumb issues potentially missing Saturday's game, and even if he starts they are likely to spring Lance for a series or two trying some read option/RPO looks if Garoppolo's not effective throwing downfield in cold weather. Wouldn't surprise me to see Jimmy G start the game and Lance end up finishing it out of necessity/desperation rather than by initial design.
  10. It was widely discussed in Cleveland media after this game (and others) why Chubb doesn't get the ball more - Stefanski isn't the one pulling Chubb off the field and not going to him - Chubb isn't a robot and needs rest at times on the sideline. This particular drive is likely a perfect example of that after getting 5 carries along with being on the field 8 of those 10 plays either running the ball or in pass pro/route running. Chubb did wind up with 20 designed touches on the day and had a huge game - but if GB's offense does anything with their final four possessions of the game it would have been a blowout.
  11. Nick Chubb blew us up. Green Bay held a 2 score lead for the vast majority of that game, even with GB's offense doing nothing the entire 2nd half. GB also still won the game. Chubb ran for 126 yards on 17 carries, with one of those carries being a 27 yd rush in the 1st half. 16 carries for roughly 100 yards is a poor average for sure, but many of his gash 8-12 yard runs came in the 2nd half when the Packer offense was busy not doing anything and keeping the Packer defense on the field. Part of negating a strong rushing attack is for the Packer offense to control possession and score enough points where their opponent can't just opt to run at will if they want to win the game. Cleveland was also a top 5 rushing team in the NFL, so Chubb blew up more than the Packers' defense this season. If the 49ers wind up winning Saturday while relying heavily on a running attack throughout the game, it's because the Packers didn't do enough offensively to force them out of that gameplan. That would be just as much on the Packers' offense as it would be their defense.
  12. To be fair to Gute, he seems to have figured that element of talent acquisition out pretty darn well with his drafting and free agent pickups - Josh Jackson was a miss, but Alexander and Stokes most definitely aren't. Amos has been solid and Douglas was a godsend pickup this year after Alexander went down. I wouldn't consider Savage a miss at safety in year 3, either - he has had a disappointing season, but I think that's largely because he showed flashes of becoming a stud free safety and hasn't realized that potential. TT at the end of his run did indeed have some horrid drafts that included DBs picked high that did start a cycle of chasing for starters that actually improved the defense at those positions.
  13. This statement could probably be said for every team in the NBA - this regular season sucks
  14. I believe counting the playoff loss to the Rams, the Cardinals were 3-7 without Hopkins in the lineup most of a game (I included their Packer loss when Hopkins did play early but had to drop out with a hamstring). They were 8-0 with him healthy enough to start and play most of the game. Murray is a good young quarterback - but he isn't great and needs elite talent at WR to make his current skillset really shine. What made AZ's offense dynamic early in the season was Hopkins on the field forcing defenses to dedicate multiple defenders to him in coverage and open up the rest of the field for those read option/RPO quick hitters that put Murray back in college football mode with easy reads and everything being keyed of the threat of him running. Whenever Hopkins would get single coverage it was almost an auto throw his way. Without a stud WR demanding double coverage most of the time, the field wasn't as open for AZ to run the basketball on grass style offense and both the passing windows and running lanes were much smaller, and Murray struggled. The Cardinals went 2-1 without Murray in November and McCoy made some plays - then Murray returned and wasn't the same player the rest of the season, particularly after Hopkins went down with a MCL. He's got to develop more as a drop-back passer that can read coverage and throw average receivers open from the pocket if he's ever going to take the next step to being truly elite.
  15. methinks the next time a quarterback from OU is touted as the consensus top overall pick, whoever holds that pick should think really hard about trading down
  16. KC/Buffalo is going to be an awesome game
  17. Jimmy G with a mild throwing shoulder sprain and continued issues with his thumb.....and he hasn't started a game below 40 degrees. Their 2019 NFCCG gameplan is definitely going to get dusted off - but this time they're going to have to throw more than 6 times. One thing that fails to get mentioned with cold weather games is how it impacts what I would term the athletic/quick hitter running game where schemes relying on speed just aren't as effective. End arounds, jet sweeps, misdirection, and designed cutback running plays just take a fraction longer to execute, and players aren't as explosive at 10 degrees on a cold track with even mildly questionable footing vs 70 degrees in perfect conditions. San Fran will need to make plays in the passing game, and I'd expect them to try more bubble screens to guys like Samuel along with trying to lean on Kittle to move the ball.
  18. The Rams beat up on a healthy Tampa squad early this season at home - personnelwise, they will give Brady problems because they have a front that can generate pressure without blitzing against Tampa's o-line and have enough talent in the secondary to play man coverage and avoid giving Brady a bunch of quick and easy throws into soft zones when they try going hurry up. Offensively, the Rams are definitely balanced enough with both Kupp and OBJ plus a good ground game to move the ball on Tampa and score - I think the Rams are the better team, but for the sole reason of not having to worry about how a game with TB12 gets officiated in the secondary I'd rather face them in the NFCCG instead of Tampa.
  19. The biggest difference between how the Packers and Cowboys executed those plays is actually the choice to pass instead of run for ~10-15 yards. Calling a pass play gets the ball downfield a second or two quicker than a direct snap and run up the middle - plus the end of that play there's going to be an official running in from the sideline to spot the ball where just the receiver and DBs covering him are located, while the entire oline and QB are running up simultaneously to get reset and out of the official's way. Even with an incomplete pass, you'd then still have enough time to take a desperation shot to the end zone, so you'd still give yourself a chance to score with a 2nd play. Running Dak in that spot forced the line and some receivers to all block upfield to the whistle before the 10 other offensive players had to get back to their positions and line up just as the official in the middle of the field was trying to hustle to the ball 20+ yards from where he was watching the play to spot it. The other difference is GB just needed to set up for a FG and Dallas was trying to get into better position to try a last ditch pass play into the endzone - IMO Dallas would've been better served running to all-streak route plays to the endzone from the 41 instead of burning 10 seconds off the clock to gain ~15 yards and have only 1 shot at the endzone to win the game from the 25ish yard line.
  20. Good - id rather face a gimpy Warner than his solid backup replacement in cold weather on a short week for them. He is going to suit up and try playing unless his ankle is detached. Doesn't mean he is going to be effective.
  21. Bosa probably, but who knows with concussions. I believe another lineman went out injured today, too. Warner couldn't finish today's game with that ankle - I hope he tries to play next weekend.
  22. Skip is definitely the lesser of the two Baylesses...and every new hot take he has widens that gap I know people that know Rick. Let's just say that the general public aren't the only ones that dislike Skip. You and me both, lol
