  1. Burnes on short rest doesn't help you score, so no thanks - especially considering 3 days rest is 2 full days less than his normal time between starts.
  2. With the exception of one swing from Rowdy on a poorly located fastball, the Brewers would be shut out for this entire series...just putrid
  3. "Desperation" or "aggressive" are interchangeable adjectives used depending on how the move plays out You aren't mistaken though saying the offense is "desperate" for scoring opportunities...and they finally had one If CC is that unconfident in his offense to view its best chance to score any runs forces him to yank his starting pitcher after FOUR innings and is dealing, then ill stick with the adjective of desperate. This isn't game 5 - and its going to put strain on a good but thin bullpen tomorrow when game 4 gets into the mid-late innings, too.
  4. Pulling Peralta in that spot reeks of a desperation move....if the inept offense can't get a run across with 2nd and 3rd and nobody out, then you at least let Peralta stay in the game to hold the Braves in check to and hope they can get to the Braves pen. Anderson was coming out after 5 regardless.
  5. So this will be the game we lose because Williams punched a wall....way too soon to pull Peralta here
  6. Is it blowing 50 there today?
  7. The frustrating part about today was the final third. Yes, but if they weren't so incompetent offensively for the first 6 innings against a starter you get more cracks at that pen, too. Frankly the Braves did them a big favor in pulling Fried after 81 pitches. Frustrating part to me continues to be innings 1-6 of completely inept offense, which limits the wear and tear they can put on a bullpen to help them later in the series in big spots.
  8. Why? He can't hit either - if the bats don't show up there's no point to try pushing starters to go on shorter than expected rest. You can't win games you don't score in.
  9. I guess reality is only one team winds up flipping the switch properly to say they got it right each year. Cards flipped theirs too early I guess? There should be no concern with the pitching based on games 1&2 - bats have to be better, particularly early in the game to actually make a starting pitcher work. Seems like the norm lately has been starters getting into innings 5-6 with basically no stress and very manageable pitch counts because the Brewers' offense is just not putting anything threatening together.
  10. Knew today was going to be tough, as Brewer bats have looked like this alot against any LHP.... Hold them here and get a few guys on base before 2 outs at some point....do something to put pressure on the pitcher.
  11. Kris Bryant looks great in a Giants uniform
  12. Buster gets the Giants rolling early!
  13. Morton needs to be thoroughly inspected for foreign substances AND given a rapid result PED test in between innings....something's up
  14. He was safe by much more than most stolen base attempts at 2nd. The catcher tagged his shoulder well after he crossed the plate even though the throw home was a good one after the pitcher finally realized what was happening. There's a big difference between a pitcher not being distracted by a guy on 3rd dancing around with no chance to actually steal home and the entire team being so oblivious to it to allow that to continue without either picking him off or making a small adjustment to hold him on even slightly to negate Arozarena from thinking about it.
  15. I honestly don't know why this doesn't happen more frequently against LHP and frankly quite a few RHP, or is at least attempted. Arozarena made it home safely with ease because of the slow, methodical process that reliever was doing getting himself set in the stretch - the reliever was completely clueless what was going on until it was way too late. Kudos to Arozarena for making some action happen during that ~3 seconds that was otherwise destined for us to watch yet another reliever do a series of toe-taps before actually delivering a pitch. Factor in the shift the Red Sox were playing, which had the 3B nowhere near the bag for Arozarena to even worry about being picked off by either the pitcher or the catcher after a pitch, and he was able to get basically halfway down the line with his lead before even starting for home. MLB.com had a really good breakdown showing the 3-4 pitches prior to the play actually happening how Arozarena was gauging his lead and looking for whether the 3B was doing anything in terms of breaking towards third before and after each pitch - once the hitter had 2 strikes on him with 2 outs it was the perfect time to take a shot....and I can't believe nobody in the Red Sox dugout didn't see that and at least call for a pickoff play of some kind a pitch or two earlier in the at bat.
  16. deep outings by the starters are critical simply because the pen is pretty thin without Williams in there and the possibility of extra inning baseball. personally I would have put one more reliever (Norris?) on the roster and kept Bradley off, especially with Taylor in the mix - I get that he's a great outfield defender, but am also trying to reverse-jinx the possibility of seeing him come up in extra innings in a key spot after replacing an OF defensively in a tight game late where Boxberger gives up an 8th inning run to tie it by worrying about it ahead of time.
  17. I think too much is being put into how the last 2 weeks of the regular season went to make this appear to be a coin flip series...but I also think Williams' injury really is an issue for how the Brewers are going to have to set up their bullpen during tight games late until they prove it isn't. Seems like alot of people forgot how good this team was when it was reasonably healthy and trying to win - they have alot if different ways they can win games, which is key for playoff baseball. September was almost entirely about treading water and getting guys as healthy as possible for the playoffs - we will see starting tomorrow how things go, but as others have pointed out I don't think what they did in late September has any bearing on how they will perform in the playoffs. I'd call it more like 60-40 Brewers, which to me is about as big of a gap between any two teams for a 5 game set should be - because if Burnes comes out flat tomorrow or the bats go to sleep anything can happen.
  18. Pitching supposedly wins in the playoffs & the White Sox surrendered the fewest runs in the AL this year. On the flip side, the Astros scored the most runs in the AL this year. Somebody's gotta lose. As a team, the Astros don't strike out and force teams to play defense. The white Sox defense is pretty bad...I doubt they win this series unless their lineup just mashes, and they are a bad match up against Astro starters because they don't hit offspeed stuff near as well as velo, and Asto starters throw a ton of breaking stuff/offspeed. Not a good start for the southsiders
  19. Yah...but will they make guys go that fast? I wish they did...but I doubt it will be anything like that. They actually made a rule to ban stupid stuff like Braun did a LONG time ago...had to be pushing 2015. You were supposed to stay in the box unless you fouled it off. No one wanted to enforce it though as it wasn't any in game punishment. It certainly reduced it to some extent, but players still don't follow it very well. I think there's a happy medium between going at Suter's pace and how most relievers/pitchers operate, and that happy medium would greatly improve pace of play. What many pitchers do now from the mound is their equivalent of Braun's (and many other hitters of that era) between pitch routines. I do think hitters have gotten marginally better at not being the reason there's such a delay between pitches - you hardly ever see hitters actually have to request for time anymore when getting themselves back into the box and ready to swing, because it's the pitchers now who are doing all sorts of stuff before even starting their windup or coming set in the stretch to deliver a pitch. At the end of the day for me, it's not about the actual length of time to complete a game if the pace of play isn't noticeably sluggish. A 4-hour ballgame with a bunch of baserunners, pitching changes, and a few lead changes is still very fun to watch - However MLB has far too many ~4-hour ballgames with about 10 total hits, limited baserunners/scoring opportunities, and not nearly enough balls put into play for fans to stay engaged with what's happening on the field.
  20. The problem with this is the fact there is no more time to shorten between breaks. It takes time to get off the field, on the field, get catchers gear on, do warm up pitches, and then start playing again. Unlike other sports Baseball doesn't just do commercials randomly during play...it is in whatever breaks the game has and they last as long as those breaks truly take. I mean I guess you could tell everyone to go faster and give them 15 seconds less...but at some point shaving 5 minutes off a game is doing nothing. Not to mention people do not like split screen ads when the game is literally going on. People cry over a split screen interview when the game is going on. I don't think Gruber Law blowing up half the screen is going to go over well. Shaving 15 minutes off a game is doing nothing. Unless we start shaving the average game time to 2:30 or maybe 2:45 I don't think anyone is going to notice. I just don't know if that is really all that possible. I don't think trying to trim between inning/half inning times is the way to approach this to improve pace of play - watching from home or at the ballpark, those pauses almost feel necessary to run to the fridge/go grab something from the concessions, etc. The problem has become that you can honestly go run to the fridge and make yourself a sandwich between pitches of an at bat during the game.
