  1. If the Brewers continue to play winning baseball for the last month of the season (winning 6 out of every 10 on average), they're almost guaranteed one of the wild care spots - and based on who they play down the stretch they'll at least have a mathematical shot at winning the division through the season's last week. If they take care of their business, they're in - and they don't have to go on some obscenely hot stretch, either. As for rooting for the Cubs to beat other wild card teams - I'd rather they lose this weekend's Philly series since the Phillies and Braves play each other a bunch and the Brewers are 3 games clear of them in the wild card standings. I want the Cubs to be as close to Milwaukee in the standings before they start their last 6 head to head matchups starting on Labor Day. Depending on how the NL West race shakes out over the next few weeks and how the Brewers do against the Cubs in their last 6 games will determine whether I'd hope for Cub wins against the Dbacks and Cardinals in September. Generally speaking, I'd still prefer they lose every game they play - but the realist in me knows they could help lock down a Brewer wild card berth if the Brewers aren't good enough to catch them.
  2. In a perfect world, tonight's cubs braves game winds up lasting 15 innings before a freeman walkoff, then the cubs flight into philly with a totaled bullpen gets in about 530 am
  3. Amen - I also think the "intent" to bunt should only be viewed by an umpire as trying to differentiate between whether the hitter is trying to bunt or trying to swing at a pitch, particularly when a ball is contacted. No way should an ump have to make the judgement call about how a bat gets pulled back or positioned shows a batter's intent on whether or not they are trying to bunt the ball. In the case of last night's situation, it should be as cut and dry a judgment call as - "Lorenzen fouled that pitch off (i.e., it wasn't a HBP) - was it on a swing or bunt attempt? 100 out of 100 umpires would say Lorenzen's approach was that of a bunt, so therefore it's a strikeout".
  4. That's crazy considering the level of meltdown this board has had at times over the past 1.5 weeks. Puts into perspective that despite the uneven pitching performances, this Brewers team keeps finding ways to win. Also, it stinks that the only other two teams playing better than Milwaukee over the past few weeks in the NL are the Cubs and Cards. It sure would be nice if this crazy Cub road trip they have starting tonight in ATL knocks them back a few more games and brings the Division lead back within a 3-game series' reach.
  5. My argument would then be, what would have happened had the ball actually landed fair instead of ricocheting foul? Since Lorenzen apparently didn't intentionally try to bunt it fair and it accidentally did, does he get another pitch? Or ice cream? To me squaring to bunt on a pitch sells out you are intending to bunt, and the only way you no longer are is if you completely pull the bat back and resume a hitting stance as the pitch is delivered. It's on the hitter to get the bat out of the way if they don't want it to hit the ball, no matter where the pitch is thrown. It's a strikeout.
  6. It's a strikeout, no question about it - as soon as the hitter squares to bunt, unless he gets his hands back to the typical hitting position on the bat he should be considered intending to bunt and a foul tip off the bat in that situation no matter how it happens should lead to a strikeout. Williams made a great pitch in that spot even if it was in off the plate, as the book on a hitter looking to sac bunt is typically come up and in hard (toughest pitch to get down).
  7. Both teams' decent pen options are gassed - plus it's a midday start.... I think it's going to be another high scoring softball game
  8. ugh...it's like you're standing on the tracks and a train is slowly bearing down on you, but you stand there anyway hoping that just this one time it derails and on the tracks is the safest place to be ...that's my interpretation on watching this game as a fan hoping they get another AB in the top o' the 10th with the 99% expectation they will find a way to lose instead.
  9. It took 4 games at Wrigley for this same Reds team to score 9 runs just this past weekend. In basically 1.5 games they've tallied 19 against a brewer pitching staff that is in full meltdown.
  10. We are 18-15 since the all star break. I don't know how to find that split exactly but just looking at past 30 games we are 11th in W/L record. We have not been one of the worst records since the ASG, people seem to think we are in a total collapse but we have played just about as well since the all star break as we did before it. That 1-8 stretch right before the break derailed things, post ASG hasn't at all. The Cubs didn't change their season by picking up Hamels - they were multiple games clear of the rest of the NL when they acquired him. In fact, Hamels' last handful of starts basically looked like the last 3 Guerra has just made. At the time of the trade, Hamels would've had the worst numbers among Brewer starters and it wouldn't have been close. Hamels' 2018 performance prior to being traded was almost as if he knew he would be traded, and he basically sleep-walked to get to the AS Break and prevented any significant trade market surfacing for him so a contending team with no farm system could swoop in and basically pick him up for AAAA fodder and marginal contract relief. The Cardinals being on fire for weeks and the Cubs' recent winning streak has made the Brewers' win 5, lose 4 / win 4, lose 5 stretch since pretty much June look like they're walking uphill in quicksand. That 1-8 stretch definitely slapped them into the place they're stuck in and deserve to be right now, too.
  11. Bottom line, when your starter can't get through the 2nd and you're down 6, there doesn't need to be a paralysis by analysis of bullpen decisions - particularly with how most of the bullpen is struggling. Happy to see the Cub/Mets game heading into extras, and by the looks of the radar, sent into a pretty crazy delay...wish I could watch the storms roll in after a Brewers win, though. Gotta win the next pair to keep winning series after tonight! Edit: their game looks to be delayed, likely until tomorrow when they'd probably try to finish this one up and then start their getaway day game - that's assuming Wrigley and the surrounding area doesn't get completely swamped overnight through midday tomorrow, which is actually what the forecast appears to be.
  12. I didn't know teams were allowed to score again after scoring 4 in the 1st inning
  13. Depends on whether they will need to score 6 just to get back in the game or not
  14. I don't care if he was unlucky recently, he has been bad since the AS break...he better be done starting considering the offdays and Davies coming off the dl in a few days.
  15. He wouldn't be facing brewer pitching anymore, so what's the point? This team just got shut down for 4 games at Wrigley in late august
  16. Methinks junior is pitching himself out of consideration for that wildcard game start
  17. At some point the Cubs will lose a game - I get that the division seems out of reach right now because they appear to be walking on water and winning every night, but I always go back to some relatively recent seasons where teams made up double digit deficits in September to make the playoffs. I'm not saying the Cubs are going to up and collapse, but scuffling through the next 5 weeks playing at or slightly below 0.500 would open the door for both the Brewers or Cardinals to catch them if they caught fire, particularly the Brewers with 6 remaining games against them. A ton can still happen in the standings over ~30 games, particularly with so many H2H matchups. Keeping my fingers crossed Wrigley gets a nice dose of Tstorms tonight and into tomorrow to completely jack up their remaining two games against the Mets before having to fly to ATL... I like the position the Brewers are in, but I also want them chasing the division to have a shot at as many playoff spots as possible.
  18. If the Brewers are still 4+ games back in three weeks after the dust settles on the Cubs' current extended stretch without a day off that includes 6 games against the Brewers, then I agree. By then the Cubs will have made up most of the extra games they need to play compared to the Brewers, and the season series between the two clubs will be completed. If the Brewers play well the next few weeks and still find themselves a handful of games behind the Cubs, you tip your hat to the team everyone assumed was the class of the division and then focus on locking down a wild card spot to get into the postseason. That being said, it's nice that the Brewers still essentially control their destiny heading into september based on their remaining schedule and their position in the standings. I'm hoping the combination of them facing Syndergaard and DeGrom in their first two games this week coupled with thunderstorms in the Chicago forecast tuesday afternoon through wednesday afternoon leads to a couple losses and a very late plane ride for the Cubs to ATL to start their next road trip. ATL actually has a decent chance of storms this Thursday, followed by what looks like a stormy weekend in Philadelphia at this point, too. Let it storm like crazy, to the point where the Cubs get into Milwaukee at like 7am on the morning they start their 3 game set at 2:20 on Labor Day.
  19. I think the nl west is going to beat up on each other in september and wind up with the division winner being the only playoff representative....likewise for the nl east. If the brewers play over 0.500 the rest of the way they will get a wild card spot, no doubt.
  20. Just keep winning series...6 left against the cubs means the division is still a possibility if you play really well against them and win 6 out of 10 on average the rest of the way.
  21. Keep winning series, and things will take care of themselves concerning playoff spots.
