  1. I sure hope not - I hope he's around for all 7 and the Cubs wind up paying through their teeth for a guy with chronic shoulder problems. For all the love the young Cub position players get, reality this year is that aside from Baez this season (A Jim Hendry draft pick), the rest of them aren't proving to be special. Heck Kris Bryant's 2018 shell has a better season-long OPS than all of them aside from Baez. It's nice having them around to offset some of the stupid contracts currently on Cub books, but as these youngish, slightly above average position players start getting expensive, the assumption that they'll all be Cubs longterm is going to quickly prove foolish. So you don't think Kris Bryant is a good baseball player? Do your family a favor and don't start betting. You are struggling to follow who posts what on this forum...stick to NSBB with bigal where you can just say horsefeathers and everyone smiles

  3. Keeping Murphy's bat in the lineup leads to the Cubs' defense suffering at a couple middle infield positions. Baez is good at SS but not as good as Russell, and Murphy is terrible defensively at 2B compared to Baez. I keep going back to the likelihood that this move happens only because Bryant's shoulder is still jacked up, and the Cubs know they are going to need more offensively down the stretch. Especially considering they still have TBA pitching probables every 5th day for the next couple weeks because they're terrified at Chatwood needing to make those starts with no offdays for the bullpen to recover.
  4. When Bryant returns: Against lefties, bench bat. Against RHP, Baez plays SS, Murphy at 2B. So who is the current Cub active roster player to go back to AAA to make room for Murphy right now while Bryant is still on the DL? And I don't think this move gets made unless the Cubs know they're not getting a healthy Bryant back soon. Wouldn't surprise me to see Murphy/Bote in a 3B platoon with the other serving as a primary bench bat. I don't think this moves their needle all that much, if at all.
  5. So where is Murphy going to play? Or does this indicate in a not so subtle way that Bryant is nowhere near 100%? These moves are basically just cash grabs, you're not going to see significant prospects change hands - the Cubs giving up anything other than $ basically just gets the deal done 2 days faster rather than the Nats just letting Murphy walk. I remember how much Cub fans hated Murphy back in 2015...they've gone full evil empire at this point.
  6. Not really, but looking at ~3 weeks of stats and holding their results as gospel, whether they be good or bad, is a recipe for drastically misjudging a player's ability. Either one of those guys could go off for 10 days and make those struggles look relatively trivial as their AB totals climb with their new clubs. When considering coming from the Orioles, who have been a doormat the past two seasons, you've also got to consider the pressure adjustment for playing everyday in a playoff hunt vs playing out the string. Plus, for both Schoop and Manny, this is their 1st time playing for a MLB organization not affiliated with the Orioles.
  7. Maybe it's drawing on my playing days long long ago, but I'd be ticked if I just hit a HR on a 2 strike count and then got yanked from my next ab so my defensive replacement could hit - regardless of which hand the pitcher was using to throw the ball. To me letting shaw hit in that spot builds confidence more than ph-ing for him.
  8. I guess my point about removing shaw in that spot in tonight's game is I think CC did it before he had to, and I disagree with taking the bat out of his hands there regardless of lefty or righty matchup. Let him hit there knowing that if you pull him for perez, perez was going to face a righty and lose the platoon advantage anyway. Sub Perez in for defense after you get one more AB out of shaw in a big spot. Glad to get the win, hope the bats heat up tomorrow to give the bullpen plenty of room to work with.
  9. Nope, but I'd still have let him hit in the 7th and have had him pulled for D in the 8th or 9th and have Perez still make that turn...guess it boils down to me rather having a guy who just hit a HR who is stuck at 2b to try and get as many bats in the lineup get one more rbi chance before getting yanked for defense, even against a lefty, than pinch hitting for him with his defensive replacement. Call me crazy I guess.
  10. 9th inning was when that happened, right? Shaw could have hit in the 7th and still gotten pulled for defense in either the 8th or 9th so Perez still makes that turn.
  11. I don't agree with the premise shaw had to be removed for defense for the top of the 8th, and because of it he needed to ne pinch hit for in tge 7th. Hader strikes everybody out and his spot was up 2 batters after shaw's. See if shaw can get a hit against a lefty in that spot.
  12. Because Shaw can't hit lefties and he was coming out for defense anyway...... Still 6 outs to get in a one run game...to me that's not worth burning shaw and a bench spot there. He just hit a HR last at bat.
  13. Unless shaw is injured, why CC, WHY??? It's a 1 run game in the 7th....taking shaw out there likely loses another at bat for him if they give up a run or two. I get going aggressive to seal a win, but being reckless with the bench/subs is silly
  14. It would be nice to hang about a 4 spot in this half inning
  15. Gonna be one of those clog the bases nights.. feels like the bottom of the order needs to break the ice and score next inning. Is it just me or has Shaw really scuffled in rbi situations lately with runners on?
  16. Epstein isn't the Cubs' GM - I know that's splitting hairs, but it's also reflective of the sheer disadvantage an organization like the Brewers has compared to what the Cubs have in their budget just for front office personnel. It's not as simple as Theo vs. DS - not even close. And for anyone that thinks Theo walks on baseball water, I give you two other pieces of low hanging fruit. Carl Crawford's Red Sox contract and Eloy Jimenez's 2018 statline as a 21 yr old between AA and AAA. He's made a bunch of great moves and won titles with big market organizations who had painful droughts - that gives him an infinitely long leash and makes the myriad of bad moves he has made easy to forget.... Truth is that anyone who things any GM is 100% right all the time is fooling themselves
  17. This isn't the AL - The Cubs are a rough week away from the NL playoff picture being a heap of teams hovering around between 10-15 games over 0.500. If the Brewers close out August strong against the Reds/Pirates/Reds, I still fully expect the 6 remaining games against the Cubs in the 1st 1/2 of September to decide who wins the division. Nobody is running away with playoff spots in the NL this year. Buckle up and enjoy the ride, if you can...
  18. with regard to Hamels, as a Cub he's pitched twice at Pittsburgh, once at KC, and once at home against the Nationals. His home start came in that pitcher's duel with Scherzer on a Sunday night game at Wrigley - wind happened to be blowing in from left center at around 10MPH, too. He's been great for 4 starts, no doubt - but he hasn't exactly pitched in difficult circumstances yet either. Frankly his value to the Cubs is to pick up innings from the shambles of a rotation they are in the progress of having despite spending a TON of money and prospect capital to put together.
  19. Plus Darvish is basically toast for 2018, if not much longer, and his rotation replacement Montgomery just hit the dl with shoulder issues. Their rotation is leaking and their bullpen is far from 100 percent - perfect time for them to go on this crazy stretch of consecutive games.
  20. I assume it wasn't planned that way? Indeed it was not. Yu doing a good job of stringing his eventual surgery date far enough out for him to get paid $20+ million while missing all of 2019 as well. For as frustrating as this recent stretch has been, thank God the cubs gave Darvish a bigger offer than the brewers did this past offseason!
  21. No hope - Mark A. should sell the team and they can move to vegas. Trade everyone before they are labeled a regression candidate and then trade the prospects you got from the initial trades before spring training. Make sure the team has 15 consecutive years of 1st overall draft picks, and only draft 8 WAR players and pitchers in the top 5 rounds of each draft to have a prayer. Never sign another free agent, although secretly bring a few in for league minimI'm that are MVP caliber. Sacrifice the bratwurst.
  22. This one feels like the game where they are tied or leading by a run in the middle innings, then hader and Jeffress finally get into the game and give up the lead because they are rusty as hell and then the brewers promptly lose in extras when a b team reliever gives up a bomb. Please prove me wrong, brewers
  23. Hader is going to need to go down to Biloxi and make a few playoff starts to reach his 90ip goal at this rate...
