  1. love to hear uecker try to explain how Kotsay has absolutely no power without actually saying he can't hit his way out of a wet paper bag
  2. Alot had to go right in order for the Brewers to win this division (even if the division wasn't full of world-beaters). So far, pretty much nothing has gone right for the Brewers, and they are 5.5 GB with four teams in front of them in the NL Central Standings. Injuries and problems with the roster depth are going to continue to be an issue for the Brewers - I don't see STL running away with the division, but with Cincy could be a problem after getting some pitching healthy with Cueto and Bailey off the DL. Overall, pitching isn't the reason the Brewers have been a sinking ship - their bad offense and terrible defense are to blame, and Melvin doesn't have enough moves available to make if the teamwide funk in those two areas continues. Even with all the starting pitching talent added in the offseason the Brewers were no better than a 50/50 shot at the playoffs (in fact they probably had longer odds than that) - that was assuming they'd be a top 5 NL offense, so if this team doesn't consistently hit, they're going nowhere.
  3. Dear Mr. Hart, We here at BF.net have patiently waited for your injured oblique to heal and for you to return to Milwaukee, displace scrubs like Kotsay and Almonte from the lineup and fill one of several black holes in the Brewers' everyday lineup. You are one of the few regulars on this roster who isn't a huge defensive liability, and you've proven to be an adequate hitter for an outfielder. We realize that it's only been about a week since you've been back and are well aware of small sample overreaction, but if you could, please start hitting the baseball! Much appreciated, Posters of BF.net that are currently being led to the edge during this wildly inconsistent start of a season.
  4. He had to get 14.65 outs in 4 IP and gave up 4 earned runs with 6 SO Yup, anytime you have to get 0.65 outs in any inning, it's tough...in all seriousness, I'm glad this is a mediocre at best division with nobody really off to a good start - at least it will keep this inconsistent team relevant through the summer.
  5. I recall a few Angels batters giving him only a grudging credit; saying his control was so bad they never had a pitch to swing at and were somewhat frightened standing in the batter's box. Isn't that the goal of pitching, to keep hitters uncomfortable and not give them good pitches to swing at? This reminds me of Crash Davis in Bull Durham... "I wouldn't dig in if I was you. Next one might be at your head. I don't know where it's gonna go. Swear to God."
  6. What's going to happen when Greinke's ready to come back tomorrow??? Counsel's going to come down with rheumatoid arthritis - seems like when a position player's ready to come back a pitcher randomly goes down or can't sleep, and when a pitcher's ready to come back a position player gets hit in the face or falls over funny.
  7. I think Boggs gets sent down today, and when Greinke's back Green will go tomorrow - Roenicke probably want's the extra pitcher in case Estrada struggles tonight so he'd have a sacrificial pitcher to burn innings up before sending him on his way. With all the extra inning games, injuries, and doubleheaders recently, RR has to be looking to keep the key guys in the pen fresh.
  8. I don't see how Gallardo gets sent to the minors - if he's injured in the least they should DL him retroactively from his last start and give him time to heal. If he's 100% healthy he needs to stay in the rotation...he's been bad lately but the Brewers aren't going to contend without him starting every 5 days - Narveson and yes, Estrada could easily start replicating Yo's suckiness. In fact, Narveson has got me worried more than Yo recently. Estrada may earn himself a bullpen spot or Narveson's #5 with another quality start, but no way should he be replacing Yo in the rotation.
  9. Betancourt's playing at a level that shouldn't warrant a 26-page thread debating whether him playing every day in Milwaukee will cost the Brewers a shot at the playoffs - there are plenty of other players on the current roster doing more to hurt playoff chances than Yuni B right now. I'd love for Betancourt to be the weakest link on the team based on this year's performance, because that would mean the rest of the roster was performing at least at expectations (which on paper would probably be good enough to win this division). The fact that he's been one of their more productive players over the past few weeks speaks volumes about the inconsistencies and deficiencies of the rest of the roster.
  10. The more Quade complains and acts like any team thumping the Cubs doesn't know how to play the game "by the book", the more I think the Cubs got themselves the absolute best guy to manage the loveable losers - if you're a fan of another team in their division. His act to please the meatballs is going to get tired really quick when he doesn't have a good enough team to win consistently.
  11. 21-8...Betancourt wins player of the month and this board completely implodes! 1-0 @ Hou 2-2 @ Atl 2-1 @ Stl 3-0 vs SD 3-0 vs Pit 1-1 @ LaD 1-1 @ SD 1-2 vs Col 3-0 vs Wsh 2-1 vs SF 2-0 @ Cin
  12. Historically, this is true. But this is shaping up to be a terrible year for SS, which lowers the bar that "replacement level" is set at. I think that's an observation worth taking a look at - alot of the sample size used in recent years to define expected production levels at certain positions happened to be at the tail end of the steroid era, while at the same time having a large number of quality offensive shortstops at or near their prime. SS is again becoming a defensive position, which is more why Betancourt shouldn't be playing there everyday instead of his offensive issues... I think Betancourt profiles as the "worst everyday player in MLB" statistically because he shouldn't be playing SS - he's been stuck there for teams that haven't contended for a few seasons because his bat isn't good enough to fit in at a corner IF position. I agree with Ender that Yuni B will turn into more of a utility infielder/bench player after this season, and probably would be already if the Brewers can find a way to get a better alternative on their roster at the trade deadline.
  13. getting out of that inning giving up only 2 runs feels like a win...can't stand Green repeatedly being used in these situations, but that's what he's supposed to be on the roster for - if he can't get it done without giving up runs he's got to go.
  14. To be fair, nobody would have made it to third from first on Hart's hit and Fielder had to hold up on YuBet's to make sure it got through.I'm not watching on TV, so that's probably correct - making an observation outside of last inning though. To me, having a guy like Fielder on base all the time should put a priority on having a slugging #6 hitter in the order like Hart.
  15. Fielder will always have a great OBP, but there should be a correction factor for how much he limits baserunning once he's on - having to go station to station when the bottom of the order comes up does limit run-scoring chances, especially in the NL when the pitcher's spot comes up often during RBI situtations.
  16. this is going to be one of those 12-10 games, at least I hope so for the Brewers' sake - Gallardo isn't fooling anybody
  17. getting pretty worrisome that once Greinke returns, Gallardo's performing like the pitcher to be removed from the rotation...gotta hope it's just command and not something health-related. nothing like spotting the team 3 runs and racking up a huge pitch count
  18. I was listening to 670 the Score in Chicago this morning - Peter Gammons was giving his weekly baseball "expert" update on all things Cubs and White Sox, but in his update on all things MLB, the topic of Fielder's upcoming free agency came up. I can't quote him directly, but I know he said this: "40-HR guys post steroids don't come around often...Fielder is a GREAT defensive first baseman..." He also talked about how Braun's contract signaled the end of Fielder in Milwaukee after this season. How silly, uninformed, and ignorant are national baseball people when it comes to small/mid-market teams? Fielder's days in Milwaukee have been numbered since he turned down the Brewers' extension offer last year, and I can't believe anybody can call him a great defensive player without being struck by lightening. Fielder's probably one of the 5 worst defensive players in all of baseball without even factoring in the position he plays.
  19. The case of Betancourt brings up the dilemma between statheads and casual fans or even diehard fans that have trouble accepting statistical analysis as baseball gospel - the statheads have mountains of statistical information portraying Yuni as no better than a beerleague softball player defensively, mainly due to his terrible range/zone ratings. Offensively, Betancourt does nothing well enough to compensate for his range limitations at SS, leading statheads to declare him the "worst MLB regular" and cry incessantly for him to be off the field. Casual fans see him as surehanded, making the routine plays and don't see the cumulative effect a SS with no range or on base skills can have on a team's season and wonder what all the fuss is about, especially if he didn't do anything during games that blatantly led to a losses. I think 99% of us don't view Betancourt as a good player, and feel that the Brewers could really improve their team if they can find an upgrade...at the right price. The difference is the sense of urgency to replace him - statheads see the sample size of his career and want him gone before giving him a chance, while others always want to see the results in a Brewer uniform before wanting to jettison him. For me, the best thing about Yuni for the Brewers is that he came with Greinke and he hasn't been blatantly terrible to this point to offset the value Greinke will add to the MLB team when he's starting every 5th day.
  20. The Cubs' bullpen is going to explode - the two guys currently filling in for injured starters aren't built up enough to go more than 4-5 innings, and they're stuck with wasting a relief spot on a guy who probably should have played wide receiver in the NFL because Hendry gave him an outrageous amount of money after drafting him. Marshall, Wood, and Marmol are very solid, but there's little else in that pen that can be counted on.
  21. I think with Saito on the DL and Kintzler recalled, Kintzler would be the first to head back once Parra or Hawkins are ready to come back - basically Saito's DL stint is allowing the Brewers to push back their tough decisions a bit later, possibly long enough for some other team looking for bullpen help to work out some sort of trade with Milwaukee, where the Brewers could get a decent bench bat in return. Not saying the Brewers' pen is full of great pitchers, but they do seem to have a good # of warm bodies with far amounts of MLB experience - for now they'll need to keep all of them until everyone's healthy and available(if that ever happens)
  22. I think after Prince leaves this season, we'll see Gamel at 1st, and I wouldn't be surprised if 2012 finds Morgan or whoever's playing SS batting leadoff so the Brewers can move Weeks to the #2 or #3 spot in the order to drive in some more runs. Morgan Hart Weeks Braun Gamel McGehee Lucroy SS P Definitely not as strong a lineup without Prince, but I think the overall offense would improve if the Brewers can find a competent leadoff hitter aside from Weeks to get on base in front of him. Rickie's definitely developing into a middle of the order hitter.
