  1. Hart Hardy Braun Fielder Hall Weeks Estrada Mench Yo With the way Milwaukee's been hitting the ball lately, that is not a lineup that a lefthanded starting pitcher would be eager to face. I'd also have no problems switching the 6,7,8 spots between Weeks, Estrada, and Mench for now - when Rickie gets some ABs under his belt and is hopefully still feeling good, I'd love to have him hitting 6th every day though. ---------------------
  2. From their play over this past road trip, the Brewers have definitely righted the ship and seem poised to steadily improve their record over the long haul - Heck, if Cordero gets that missed 3rd strike call down in Texas, and Suppan actually showed up to pitch in Minnesota yesterday, we could easily be talking about a 7-2 road trip against AL teams! I'm not looking for Milwaukee to have to win every single series between now and the All Star break, but looking at pitching matchups and the current state of their opponents, it's hard not to be greedy, especially if Yo is effective and Capuano comes back strong. If Milwaukee plays a few games over .500 in this stretch, I would think that their lead in the division would at worst be exactly the same as it is now - the difference would be that other NL Central teams lost 19 games off their schedule to close the gap between them and Milwaukee. The Cubs are really a team full of talented players in disarray right now - it seems like they are as stable emotionally as their comical fan base. The Cards have been hanging around, but they now are in the toughest part of their schedule outside the division, and they can't seem to keep their players healthy - their farm system stinks, and because of that it will be difficult for Jocketty to make a trade to improve the Cardinals, unless he wants the shelves in their minor leagues to be completely bare. ------------------------------------
  3. Nobody said it was gonna be easy for this team to win the division - if it was it would have happened at some point over the past 25 years While it would be great to blow the rest of the division out of the water by 15 games, it'd also be great to be involved in a tight race to see who comes out on top. Right now it feels good to be the hunted for a change, rather that speculating how many games the brewers would need to win over the course of two weeks to get back to wild card contention, as has been the case over the past few seasons. And as much as scrub fans would hate to admit it since they always claim to care less about the Brewers, seeing Milwaukee in front of them in the standings doesn't sit well with them. I think they'd actually rather be trailing the Cards by 5 games right now. They might actually have to accept that the Brewers are one of their rivals, instead of claiming that playing the Cubs is like the playoffs to the Brewers. As a Brewer fan, I've watched some brutal Milwaukee teams who oftentimes had trouble fielding even a semi-competitive roster - I for one like the view from the top of the division (even though the division may not seem too impressive right now), instead of what the outlook is right now for a fan of the astros, reds, cards, pirates, or cubs. Being in front of a division lets you focus on rooting for your own team rather than praying for other teams to lose in order to feel good about your team's chances. -------------------------
  4. I know I'm splitting hairs here, but if Zambrano was picking out shinguards for Molina to pitch to him in Chicago, wouldn't he want blue ones? I'm gonna agree that Zambrano was simply being the piece of work that he is. I also agree that Barrett could easily be dealt, especially once Hank White (Henry Blanco) comes off the DL. I guess my main point is that the Cubs have a much better chance of improving if players they already have start producing more consistently, rather than being really active in the trade market - their whole team seems to play great or horribly at the same time. If they find a way to pick each other up rather than piling on to good and bad situations from game to game, their talent will keep them winning consistently.
  5. Now, Barrett is almost certain to be moved -- so perhaps Molina coming to the Cards for Barrett may make some sense. Did you mean that Molina would get traded to the Cubs for Barrett? I really doubt that - I think Zambrano is more or less alluding to his pending free agency than the Cubs trading for a catcher that the Cards probably won't ever trade - especially now that he's on the DL for at least another month. Actually, I think the Cubs are more likely to trade Zambrano than Barrett - they have nothing special at C in their organization to replace Barrett, and it would be tough to get a different catcher that makes any positive impact on their season via trade. If the Cubs are happy with Marmol's progress, they may opt to move him into the rotation, and trade Zambrano (who's gonna be gone after this year anyway) for a very good package of prospects or mlb ready players. Whether the Cubs are buyers or sellers at the deadline, IMO, depends on how they play this next month - even if they become sellers, they very well may improve their team by unloading some of the many "spare part" players that they have on their roster. The rest of the Cubs players that they will be looking to use as trading chips are all sell low players - aside from D Lee, Ramirez, and Soriano, the veterans on their team generally are underperforming, and have difficult to trade contracts.
  6. It's not necessarily taking on payroll that I'm saying the cubs can't do - it seems that the Cubs organization is currently a frozen asset, and it looks like it may be more difficult than normal to change the makeup of their roster, whether that be a contract or a trade. I can see their rationale for not extending Barrett - although they really have nothing in their farm system at catcher to replace him with, but the whole Zambrano contract extension is fishy. He accepted an offer given to him by Hendry, but the trib hasn't approved the deal, since it obviously guarantees money in future years. If anything, I think Hendry's trying to figure out what to do with his roster with all these recent callups from their minor leagues - he did a great job of throwing the bank at any player who wanted to play in Chicago, now Pinella's been stuck with trying to field a team with a roster full of 2nd baseman and corner outfielders. They could very well trade for a player in a walk year, much like Texas did with Carlos Lee last year - I think they will have a difficult time putting together pieces to trade back to teams looking for prospects and inexpensive pre arby players compared to the other teams looking to be buyers at the trading deadline, though.
  7. Not sure how active the Cubs are gonna be when the trade deadline rolls around - I have a feeling that until the team gets a new owner, the powers that be that are running the team (the trib) are hamstrung in adding payroll, since they technically can't sign off on any increased expense to the team. it's kind of been a developing story down here in Chicago. If money were no object to the Cubs, why aren't players like Zambrano and Barrett locked up longterm yet? The Cubs roster is full of contracts that other teams get ill over when considering trading with them - Unless they can eat portions of some of those contracts, and can take on additional salary, I don't see the Cubs improving via trade. They've made a ton of moves by calling up some of their minor leaguers already, if they continue to underperform, you could see a firesale from them at the end of July. -------------------------
  8. Milwaukee is at least a week-long losing streak AND a week long winning streak by either the Cubs or Cardinals away from dropping from 1st place. Even during this incredibly rough stretch, they've pretty much treaded water with the rest of the division. Let's put it another way - if the Brewers play just .500 baseball for 2 months (56 games, say 28 -28 ) , a team 5.5 games out would have to play at around a .580 clip just to catch them. Obviously, if Milwaukee gets back to playing baseball even at a slightly winning pace, teams would have to win even more. The cubs and cards current winning percentages are hovering around .460 - they really haven't done anything to indicate that they're primed for a prolonged hot streak, they got closer to Milwaukee because the Brewers have struggled so much lately. A month ago I remember Cub fans preaching that there were still 120 games left to be played and that there's plenty of time to make up ground - they're basically right where they were a month ago, and now there are about 95 games left to be played...still a lot of baseball, but IMO the rest of the division missed out on a golden opportunity to reel Milwaukee back into the pack while it played its toughest portion of their schedule. To make a long story short, Milwaukee's hot start gave them plenty of wiggle room to go through some tough times - they've gone through those tough times, and if the worst is behind them, it will be VERY tough for another team in the NL Central to make a run at them. -----------------------
  9. we are going to need a mikevan trips to the can tracker added to the IGT now that Yo's getting called up! -----------------------
  10. Is it just me or does it seem like TBow really struggles throwing strikes to left handed punch and judy hitters? It may seem worse than it is, since most people stand there until they have two strikes on them - because of that when TBow's off, he's rarely gonna get any help edit: i mean punch and judy lefties other than Neifi ------------------------
  11. Marquis hit the pitcher, walked two, there was a fielding error, and then Ibanez cleared the bases with a double. Always fun to be able to give up 4 runs on 2 hits...gosh I love the Cubs -------------------------
  12. Gosh, I just hate those solo home runs! --------------------------------
  13. Thank you Billy Hall! Any way we could push that roster move for Yo up a few hours and have him come running out of the pen with a cape on? Spurling is making me ill! ---------------------------
  14. He's already gotten away with serving Sheffield 2 cookies the AB and he walks him
  15. Nedly had Spurling warming up alongside Shouse last inning...hopefully that's Yost figuring that we're scoring at least 4 more runs this inning Nice start to the inning by Jenks ------------------------
  16. Time for Shouse's usual act, fall behind in the count 2-0, realize he's actually in there to get the left handed bat at the plate out, groove an 82 mph saucer right down the heart of the plate and pray he hits it right at someone ----------------------
  17. man, if there was ever a time not to walk the #9 hitter
  18. Mr. Monroe has been officially owned today
  19. Ledezma likes to allow runs to score in a plethora of ways
  20. So that Braun kid is a pretty good hitter
  21. If Weaver only gave up 3 runs in the first, his ERA probably went down! Marquis is pitching for the Cubs today - way, way too early to write that game off. ----------------------
  22. Sheets is flat out dealing right now - Nobody's getting decent swings off him. It's got to be a helpless feeling at the plate when he's got that yacker working, and he's throwing mid 90's - Everyone looks like they become guess hitters.
  23. nope, good baserunning by J.J. - he didn't take 2nd base until Granderson's throw airmailed the cutoff man and skipped past the catcher
  24. Looks like Durbin's definitely not making it through 4 --------------
