    I don't think I'd ever throw PCA a strike on the first pitch. There we go - stay out of big inning trouble and keep grinding at bats out when you're back in the dugout.

    I think a big part of that is the fact the Brewers have seen Boyd so much, too. Not that the Cubs had any other great options to start game one (maybe Soroka?)...but was surprised that Boyd was that starter. Knowing he got knocked out after a 30 pitch 1st inning probably shouldn't sit well with Cub fans knowing Boyd may now get the ball for either game 4 or 5, either.

    I'd agree with you more if there weren't all the days off between games 1-2 and 3-4...feels like a game where the Cubs could just throw away if it gets completely out of hand and the pen isn't burned out because of it.

    Yep, and based on what was left (namely not left) in the Cubs pen, things could've gone incredibly sideways had that call been made correctly right after he started his 2nd inning of work and had already given up a bomb to Merril. That is exhibit A why the ABS review is going to dramatically help the game - and Id say the same thing if it was the Cubs that got screwed on that call.

    Exactly - the Padres had a quality chances to take a bigger lead in Game 1 and didn't capitalize.

    I dislike the every other day game schedule for the NLDS, which should pretty much keep bullpens on really good rest throughout - Kind of wish they wouldn't have planned off days between games 1-2 and 3-4, as it would preserve some of the strain the Cubs' pitching staff put on themselves during the 3 wildcard games. That being said, these off days between games will give the Brewers' key pen arms all the rest they need to be available every single game, too. The mix of Ashby, Koenig, Uribe, and Megill being able to go rinse/repeat for 5+ innings each playoff game as needed without much of any worry on rest is pretty damn solid. As has been the case with other Brewers' postseason runs, how far they go will most certainly depend on how many runs they can consistently score. At some point even the most airtight pitching staffs spring postseason leaks, and teams that win titles take advantage.

    WisDOT needs to reposition every single one of their construction barrels and jersey barriers between south Milwaukee and the state line, plus just randomly throw flashing lane change signs pointing in all directions, through Monday morning

    Sure helps that the Pads seem to suck at hitting, too - at least up to these last 6 outs the Cubs need to get. Lot of key relievers already burned through on the Cub side today, too

    These game 3's have the feel of managers being too quick on the hook for their starters, then realizing many of their key late inning arms are a bit strained late with playoff outs being a bit more stressful. Thinking this is already happening with the CLE/DET game, and I expect both CC and Schildt to go to their pens instantly and maybe both regret it once the late innings arrive if the game is tight. I can also see either Taillon or Darvish get shelled early on a hot Wrigley afternoon and that game gets out of hand quickly.

    Some of this, IMO, has to do with how spoiled we've been watching HOF quarterbacks in complete control of an offense manage the game on the field with next to zero input from a coach. Love obviously isn't at the same level as Rodgers or even Favre when it comes to that. On that checkdown to a RB with no shot at getting out of bounds, Love has to realize that even if it's a 2nd or third read on the play that was called and even if it's open enough for the completion, the ball can't be thrown there in that situation and risk the game clock evaporating. The better decision is to throw it 10 feet over his head out of bounds to stop the clock and allow for another play from a huddle. As frustrating as it is knowing better clock management/play decisions the past two weeks have this team 2-1-1 instead of 4-0, it is just getting to October - hopefully some of this improves as the season wears on.
