  1. you can argue k's,ops,ba,ob whatever - it is just time to do something different with the lineup. move weeks down, hardy up, hart up, cameron down. the place in the lineup obviously effects prince and braun - why wouldn't it effect the others in a similar way? there are 4 guys in the everyday lineup hitting at or below .200 - just try anything at this point. last year every game had a different lineup. now it never changes. there has to be a balance there somewhere...
  2. I was just thinking that Maddux seems to be a perfect match. San Diego is going nowhere, they want Gywnn, Greg can come hang out with his brother. Plus he is pitching pretty good this year and would add some stability to the starting rotation while being able to mentor the young guys that we have. lets do it...
  3. I wonder if Ted Simmons would take the job? Aren't he and Yost good buddies and that why he is on the staff? I don't have a good read on him as far as if he is on the staff to help out his buddy or if he has ambitions to manage someday...
  4. the brewers really need to extend sheets. they have not done the job in developing a pitcher to take his place (well, one could argue that gallardo was that guy - but that is a big question mark now). it would be a shame to wait so long for this group of guys to develop and then not have the pitching to support it. Besides - who else are we going to get that has the potential/skill of Sheets that is going to be any cheaper?
  5. if all a team has to pay is $400k as stated above to get turnbow - there will be LOTS of teams that will take a chance on him. he was an allstar closer short time ago - and his problems are more mental than physical. why not take a $400k chance?? the brewers took a $10 million dollar chance on their closer for this year...
  6. i was a turnbow supporter. he has struggled recently, but he has had long stretches where he was really really good. he was lights out for the first half of last year. i really thought that he could help the team. But now I firmly believe that he has got to go. He can still be a productive reliever, but not here and I think its time for him and the brewers to move on. it has got to be hard to go from being the main guy (closer/fan favorite) to being the main guy's set up guy to being a mop up guy (fan scape goat). his confidence is shot and its time to go... I will never understand relievers. there are a few that are good year after year - but so often a guy thats awesome one year all of a sudden can't get anybody out the next.
  7. I am getting to the point (getting to - not there yet) where I wouldnt mind seeing Counsell batting leadoff and playing 2b instead of weeks. I was expecting big things from Rickie this year and it just isnt happening. I know its early so I havent given up on him yet - just getting frustrated.
  8. i agree with this - i wonder how much of Rickies struggles are him trying to be a "leadoff hitter" instead of just a hitter. i have a feeling that he is too concerned with taking pitches, working the count, and trying to just get on base. in other words he is thinking too much. I would love to see him in the 6 or 7 hole in the lineup with the instructions to "don't think - just hit".
  9. i heard the guy with the f-bomb too! i couldnt believe that 1) they show those shots live 2) they woudl play audio live! early last year they caught me leaving the concession stand with a hotdog. they reshowed it all season long - I had people coming up to me months later asking me how the game was last night. point is - dont show the drunk guy at the concession stand live!
  10. it seems like everytime I go to a game there is a loud mouth behind me that talks a lot (and loud!) and doesnt have any clue what he is talking about. usually the stuff is so stupid that you don't even know where to start to correct them. I usually just tune them out...
  11. I was expecting to see big improvement from weeks this year too - and so far it just seems like more of the same. I had always thought that Hardy would be the first of this group of guys to leave. Mostly because his "replacement" is rapidly ascending the ranks in the minors and Hardy was one of the first to come up. But now, I am starting to think that Weeks might be the first to go - with some sort of position change for Hardy (2B maybe?) when Escobar is ready. And with all the talk of locking the younger players up to long term deals this year, I can't say that I have heard Weeks name mentioned at all. It is so frustrating, because like others have said he gives you flashes of what he could be - if only he could get it together...
  12. it seems to me that they have Gross as the 5th OF right now and I would expect him to be the one to go to make room for Cameron. Until Gywnn got hurt, Gross was the odd guy out eith Kapler and Gywnn doing the platoon thing - and Gross's slow start isnt helping his case. I agree with the trying to get McClung thru waivers and send him to Nashville. It would be hard to get rid of Turnbow with Gagne struggling out of the box, imo...
  13. don't teams usually take out insurance on big contracts like this to help take some of the risk away? how does that work - i assume that just covers serious injuries?
  14. Using riske for 2 innings was fine - as long as he doesnt pitch again until fri or sat. The only thing I thought of was that with a 6 run lead with only 3 outs to go sounded like prime garbage time for McClung. but I suppose "garbage time" is pretty debateable so I am fine with Riske staying in...
  15. rivera or munson - does it really matter? kendall is going to start 140+ games and yost never uses his backup catcher off the bench. so what does that leave for the Rivera - 20 starts, maybe 100 plate appearances, and some late inning defensive work in blowouts. this is why I am happy that rottino is in AAA developing his catching skills. sitting on the bench in milwaukee will do nothing for him...
  16. my point is that there isnt a need to try to figure out days off. guys are going to get days off during the season for a variety of things; minor injuries, sickness, a rough stretch at the plate, discipline (ie Bill Hall getting tossed for showing up the ump), matchups (Yost loves this one), etc. I dont like the idea of sitting guys just "cause" or so that a sub can get a few at bats.
  17. are you guys serious? There is no way that these guys need that much rest. Fielder and Braun should only be out of the lineup if they are hurt - if healthy they should both start 162 games. You really want to sit Braun down twice a month so Gabe Gross can get some at bats? I think that is ridiculous. poor performance or injury is the only thing that should keep any of the regulars out of the lineup (with the exception of Kendall). Fielder, Weeks, Hall, Hardy, Braun , Cameron, and Hart are the core of this team and need to be out there everyday. This isnt little league where we need to get the subs a start once a week to keep their morale up...
  18. it doenst really make sense to keep rottino. Jim Powell was saying on the radio this past weekend that Kendall expects to start 140+ games this year. Doesnt leave much pt for the backup. I would rather see Rottino get a chance to actually play down in AAA. Coudn't Bill Hall be the backup SS if needed? I really dont see Counsell getting let go, but if they wanted to move in that direction they could keep Rottino here as a 3rd C and utility guy?
  19. notice that they dont even have a picture for the reigning roy yet? no sense wasting time getting a picture for a guy until your sure he is going to be around for a while...
  20. Good thinking. The only problem is that no team is going to give us a prospect worth very much. They are thinking the same thing. If they can give a minor prospect - Gross is an attractive option. If they have to give anything of value - they will just pay Lofton. would lofton really come here knowing that he will be a backup? he could obviously play in april - maybe at his age he would accept that he would be better off not playing 9 innings every day?
  21. I don't get this sentiment, can you expand on it? I see people saying it quite often. We're gonna have 5 guys on the bench, right now thats filled by Counsell, Dillon, Gross, backup catcher and probably Gwynn. I guess I don't consider that weak. Two solid bats (Gross/Dillon) and two glove guys, plus a catcher. I'd give Doug an A for the off season. The 1 year deals are huge for the 'crew, leaves them flexible next year, and they can hope someone else steps up and is ready to close next year, whether its Turnbow, Riske, Mota or whomever else, once Gange walks and gives the team 2 more draft picks. I have stated that I thought our bench is a little weak too. I think that the difference is that there seems to be a lot of inexperience on the bench. Last year for example, the bench had cousnel, graffanino, miller, mench. while I will be the first to admit that isnt a very exciting group - they were a solid group of veteran guys. like I said, not exciting, but you know what you are going to get. Dillion looked allright last year, but is still an unknown imo. munson and rivera have both been around for a while but I am not sure they bring as much to the table as Miller did. gross and gwynn were both here last year and can probably be better than mench was. I guess I agree that our bench isnt in that bad of shape. I have just been more comfortable in the past...
  22. ok, seriously now. the brewers want to get to the world series this season and some people think that sending out a platoon of gwynn and joe dillion is going to get us there?? that would be a serious hole in the lineup and I know I would be disapointed if thats what the plan is on opening day this season. gwynn, grosss, dillion , etc are nice players and I have no problem with them having bench roles this year. but this isnt the brewers of 2002 - this is a playoff caliber team. playoff caliber teams dont start players like that...
  23. I think that Bush and Vargas are basically pitching for their starting jobs over their next 2 or 3 starts. Lets see who wants it more. Whatever happens its good to have "problems" like this. At least it gives the Brewers some options: 1. Any of the 3 in the pen makes the pen better. 2. Using Bush or Vargas as trade bait could bring in another quality player to fill a need. 3. Having Bush and Vargas pitch so good that Gallardo has to go back to the minors is not a bad thing.
