  1. Three walks in a single game is what I would hardly call potent. Vander Wal, on the other hand, is posting an .892 OPS as a regular every day starting outfielder. If only we had been playing him every day from Opening Day...
  2. Wayne Franklin is keeping the Pirates quiet... There's only that leadoff triple in the 6th which led to a run, but beyond that. he's putting up quality starts. -- EDIT: Gotta question Ned on this one. Franklin's gone six innings, only given up one run and two hits, and only 85 pitches. We could easily get another inning or two from him.
  3. Okay, but let's look at other stats, shall we? OPS: .774 HR: 10 - tied for second SB: 19 - leading The offense is making up for his defensive shortcomings, IMHO.
  4. And Valerio gave us two good innings as well. His ERA is getting lower. Now, if only we can get DeJean back on track in time for a July trade...
  5. Pulling Matt Ford after only 62 pitches.
  6. docduany: Perhaps, but how hard is it to hide someone in left field? I'll admit, Brad Nelson won't be Geoff Jenkins defensively, but offensively, he'd be pretty darn good. If both are stuck at first, then I'd rather see us start lobbying the commissioner's office to have the National League adopt the designated hitter rule.
  7. I do not intend to minimize the importance of pitching. I am saying, however, that no top-flight starter will do well if he does not have run support. And having both Nelson and Fielder will increase the amount of likely run support, particularly if both pan out.
  8. Allow me to disagree on several counts: 1. I think the lack of corner OF depth IS a factor. One that will be a blessing in disguise since we would NOT have to make a trade. If anything, it mitigates in FAVOR of playing both Nelson and Fielder together - preferably at Huntsville, so we can find out in Nelson can handle a corner OF spot. 2. I would rather have both Nelson and Fielder. A good pitching staff is nice, but you gotta give them run support. If you don't score runs, you can't win. If Belcher stays healthy I'll deal HIM for pitching. 3. If a guy is drawing two walks a game, and on a consistent basis, then I'd say his plate discipline is advancing pretty well, and it might be better for Prince to get to High Desert.
  9. MassBrew: I have seen multiple box scores where Prince is drawing two walks a game. Teams are pitching around him a lot. I know I've said it before, but please indulge me: It may be time to think about moving him up to High Desert with Brad Nelson.
  10. Back when I was in eighth grade - I had a somewhat similar experience to Luis Martinez in the third inning in a softball game during PE. I got on base with a bunt hit. Next pitch, I took of for second, heard the bat connect with the ball, and changed my thinking from "stolen base" to "hit and run". Got to third, no problem... and was called out since the previous hitter had hit a fly ball that was caught. That pretty much told me NOT to consider playing, and to stick with being part of the brain trust.
  11. The interesting thing will be in Anthony Gwynn is doing well as he moves up through the system. I'm thinking he could be valuable trade bait - particularly if the Padres have some players we might want two or three years down the road.
  12. Please let Bakker slip to the 4th...
  13. Blast! I was hoping to add him to the system. Now we gotta hope that Weeks slides to #2 overall.
  14. Adams reminds me a little of Derek Lee, who probably should have been higher up in the system and even a contender for the rotation eventually. A control pitcher, left-handed, maybe a #5 starter, who does not give up the gopher ball and pitches to contact.
  15. filthyfrog: You have hit a major point. At least with Sanchez, there is a good chance of a hit, and so pitchers have to exercise more care with him than with Lawrence. Still, with Lawrence's plate discipline (walks exceeding his strikeouts), I think the average could be on its way up by June or July, because Lawrence is flashing some decent gap power as well (seven of his 22 hits are for extra bases).
  16. The issue is the batting average. Will a high rate of walks continue as pitchers realize that his batting average is close to Blanco territory? As a utility player, he'd be a superb addition - a defensive replacement at any number of positions, and he seems to have some okay speed, particularly for a catcher. But "Whoa!" Joe Lawrence could be a big help right now. Drop Osik, and get him in Milwaukee ASAP.
  17. He goes into a game with a .204/.339/.316 line - then goes 1-for-3 with two walks, and scores two runs. Yes, the average stinks. But he has some pop (5 doubles and 2 homers in 98 ABs), and he is walking so much, one has to wonder if it might not be time to DFA Osik, have Lawrence take over the #8 slot in the lineup, and move Royce Clayton up to the #7 slot. Edit: Corrected typo.
  18. The other thing that does is that it will allow Brian Foster to be the #1 catcher at High Desert, and from Jim Powell's comments in the chat, Foster is the best defensive catcher in the system. It seems as if they're trying to maximize the ABs for both him and Kade Johnson.
  19. Krynzel's been compared to Steve Finley - I think there also was a comparison to Paul O'Neill. Both of those hitters have pretty good power. One has to question whether there is a thought of Krynzel batting in the 2nd or 3rd slot in the majors. If his power numbers are along the lines of Finley and O'Neill, it might be a better to bat Krynzel third, and hope that Knox or Sanchez can handle leadoff. Barring that, we may need to find a leadoff hitter.
  20. I've liked Lee for a while and hope he gets his chance soon. Parra's gonna be a fun one to watch as he moves up the system.
  21. Almost looks like it would be a waste to put Diggins in the bullpen if he keeps going 6-7 innings a start and racking up a 7:1 strikeouts-to-walks ratio. Seriously folks, I think we ought to keep Diggins in the rotation until he hits the wall as a starter. No different from how the Brewers ought to handle Luis Martinez.
  22. Kind of odd though. Diggins is posting a 1.46 ERA, not as dominating as Luis Martinez, but in both cases, we ought to work them both as starters until they hit the wall in the rotation. To paraphrase from the Luis Martinez thread, Mariano Rivera is okay, but Curt Schilling is better. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  23. igor67: That is an interesting thought. Maybe Wright will stick around after May 1.
  24. RJ? No, I don't think Luis Martinez will be that good. But he'll be a pretty good #3 starter.
