  1. I think the word hate is overdoing it a bit.
  2. These are the two main issues involved:High definition monitors are so sharp that they begin to expose flaws in the picture in standard definition broadcasts. Most users will stretch a 4:3 picture to fill the screen, meaning that Prince Fielder becomes wider than he already is.Regarding item #1, here's another complaint:Cable companies still broadcast the most popular channels in analog. At least satellite standard definition channels are digital, which noticeably improves the picture. I'd gladly replace a pocket full of quarters with some dollar coins, and I wouldn't miss the wad of singles that frequently occupies my wallet. The coin hoarding thing began with the Kennedy half dollar. 50 cent pieces were routinely circulated before then. The recent dollar coins (Eisenhower, Susan B. Anthony, and Sacagawea) have barely been used at all. I wonder what would have happened if the talk of Ronald Reagan being put on a coin or currency had actually materialized. That idea was effectively nixed by Nancy, who was against Ronnie replacing any president currently portrayed. That eliminates everything except the $10 bill, and you really can't wipe out Alexander Hamilton given his lead role in the design of our monetary and banking system. More gripes: Message boards with nine page threads that show "1 2 3 ...9" under the title when I absolutely know I want to start reading on page 7 or 8. The lone fly that's lived in my house for about a week and only shows up when I sit or lie down. Asian beetles. They ought to be showing up soon. Members of the media and advertising industry who duped the public into thinking that the 21st century and 3rd millennium began in the year 2000. Cats on kitchen counters. My friend's pet raccoon who jumps me from behind and chews on my head. Having to scroll sideways to read a web page. The lack of moderators on mlb.com message boards. The fact that mlb.com team home pages are unusable for dialup visitors without major surgery on the user end. Having to use user-end site-specific CSS (or God forbid, javascript, which I don't even know) to make sites with good content, but poor layout, usable and readable. People at ballparks who can't wait for innings to end?or at least wait until a time between pitches?to get in and out of their seats. (One time a guy at County Stadium was standing in the aisle next to the front row. When someone yelled, "Down in front!" his response was, "Excuuuuussse me while I talk to my friends!") Forgetting to override the motion sensor on my outside lights?which only leaves them on for one minute?when I want to take my dog around the yard at night. He doesn't understand that I can't sniff my way around like he can.
  3. Baseball announcers should know how to pronounce Spanish names whether they know the guy or not.
  4. Daron was wrong. The Cards have won four division titles in the new millennium, not five.

  8. > First, when you write a reply, make sure the HTML radio button is selected in the formatting area (below the subject box). Then you can use code like this: Your list items go between the s, like this: Your list item Use as few or as many s as you need. Using the way I've shown above, ezBoard will skip lines between list items. If you prefer not to skip lines, cram them together like this: Item 1Item 2Item 3 (If you were actually writing a web page rather than posting to a message board, it wouldn't matter if your items were 'crammed' or not.) brewers19 is using an actual keyboard character rather than creating an HTML list. On a Mac, it's option-8. I don't know the key combo in Windows, but it'd be in the Character Map program somewhere.
  9. Of course, I consider myself a nice guy and I don't mean to single you out, but you've walked right into one that bugs me: In this case, it's Casey and me. The verbiage requires an object, not a subject. The easy way to be able to test what's correct is to plug in a plural pronoun (a contest between us rather than a contest between we. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Or faucets that choose the temperature for you. Combine our three faucet complaints, then picture trying to fill a dog's water bucket at a highway rest area. (No, you can't use the 'bubbler' for that.) Ah, yes. That reminds me that you're from Illinois. Here's a complaint that isn't mine, but it's along the same line. A friend just moved up here from Missouri. It drove her nuts that people would say ditch instead of shoulder. The ditch and the shoulder are two separate things. You can be on the shoulder and not be in trouble. If you're in the ditch, you're always in trouble. Worse is when you go indoors and have to walk through the smoking area to get to the non-smoking area. And I find it odd that at Miller Park, people have to go indoors to smoke. (I actually don't like cigarette Nazi-ism but feel that common courtesy should prevail.) I almost put "Republicans, Democrats, and Independents" on one of my lists. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Here are a couple more: Men's rooms in Mexico that lack toilet seats, even in very nice places. Heck, when you're eating the food down there, you tend to need a toilet seat more often than in the States. TV commercials that are way louder than the rest of the programming. People who talk on cell phones at stadiums, then express annoyance that those around them are too loud.
  10. Some of the flash thingies online are too much for me to deal with for following games. But I like the running box that JS Online provides. Here's today's: snap.stats.com/premium/sfa/stats/snap/boxscores/boxscore_260917120.asp Play by play stuff is in the "At the park" link on that page.
  11. I thought of making a hawing comment when I wrote that, but I refrained. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I will never, ever put that service on my home phone. On my cell phones, I ignore the beep and continue with the current conversation.
  12. Some more: Saying eye-RACK instead of ear-ROCK. Thunder. (Imagine getting a 65 pound dog out of a bathtub that's a step up from the floor.) Houses without enough electrical, phone, or TV outlets. Having to travel out of town to get the right dog food. Dog food that's only readily available in 7 pound bags. Being forgotten about when I'm placed on hold, especially when all I want to know is how long a place is open that day. Spell checkers that change my spellings and capitalization when I dang well know how I want things typed. (I guess Microsoft is policing our English.) Rural electricity that browns out or surges on a daily basis. Web pages which automatically play music. Web pages which use fonts that are too small, then screw up when I override the author's "judgment". Making a phone call and trying to figure out the right sequence of numbers to punch to be able to talk to a real person. People who want to borrow my car just because it's better than theirs. Signs on Illinois highways that aren't placed over the lane you'll need to be in. Finding out about road construction half a mile before it starts. Reconstruction of the Dan Ryan Expressway. The shortage of high definition TV channels and broadcasts. Satellite and cable receivers that have connectors on the back that don't work because the software isn't programmed to know about them. Restroom faucets which are supposed to automatically turn on, but don't. The fact that Tracfone's tech support is in Colombia and that many of the technicians can't understand my English. (I'm OK with asking technicians to repeat things; I just don't want to have to be the one doing the repeating. Actually, some accents in this country are harder to understand than the foreign ones.) Calling someone's tech support, then ultimately having to teach them the solution to the problem I called about in the first place. Use of the word gay when the subject at hand has nothing to do with sexual orientation. Web pages which present long documents in light text on a dark background. Flights from Milwaukee to St. Louis with a layover in Miami. Commercials for obnoxious FOX programming during Packer games. Rabbits which consume stuff in my garden before I can. Four inches of snow in October before leaves are done falling from the trees, causing a mess in spring. Pierced body parts anywhere away from the ears. Cell phone contracts; I have prepaid phones with two companies. Satellite TV contracts. Too bad it isn't practical to always avoid those. Dialing a phone number without knowing whether it's going to be a local call or a toll call. (It happens in the 414 area code when you have to put a "1" in front of everything in 262. And it happens here in the northwoods where we have 7-digit local calls and 7-digit toll calls. Sadly, the landline company doesn't know about cell exchanges; you find out when you get your bill.) Whenever I have one more web page to look at and some server decides to burp.I'd add saying Foxfire instead of Firefox, but usually it turns out to be too funny to be annoyed.
  13. I've never cared about the pop/soda controversy. I guess I use both words. Things that bug me: Seeing resign on a sports message board when the writer really means re-sign. (The guy isn't quitting.) The apostrophe thing ... big time. The fact that the Americans and the Brits can't agree on what's singular and what's plural. "Words" like 4 (for), ne (any) u (you) ur (your), etc., on message boards. (There's no 165 character limit here.) The fact that Miller Park shows OBP on its main scoreboard, SLG pct. on the left field board, and OPS on the board behind home plate. People who talk on cell phones when they're trying to pay a cashier. Microsoft gets an itemized list. [li]Internet Explorer. OEM Windows install disks that are different from machine to machine. The fact that their licensing agreement makes it impossible to pick up a Windows install disk cheaply on eBay.[/li] [*]Branyon, Macgruder, Darron (Sutton). [*]Litter. [*]Cigarettes in laundromats. (That's a little counterproductive, isn't it?) [*]Saying nu-cue-lar. [*]Referring to Ned Yost as the Brewers' head coach. [*]Taking an item out of the freezer to unthaw it. (Wouldn't unthaw be a synonym for refreeze?) [*]Dr. Laura. [*]Long paragraphs (or worse, no paragraphs) in message board posts. [*]Flash animation. [*]Tom Haudricourt references to Greg Gross. [*]Music and stupidity on Baseball Tonight. [*]The lack of a full-time Wisconsin FSN on the satellite services. Worse, not making even an attempt to pick up any WI programming beyond the games. [*]Yous as a plural for you. [*]Saying on accident rather than by accident. [*]Huge images on "professionally" designed web pages. [*]The fact that the yogurt commercial couldn't get the words to Itsy, Bitsy, Teenie, Weenie, Yellow Polka-Dot Bikini right.
  14. Satellite internet is a big equipment investment and it means a third dish on the front of the house. Lots of seeing eye stuff for the Nats in the first inning.
  15. Yeah, it looks as if Brian's server is down. The forums are hosted separately. Being that I'm in the dialup world, I have several pages on this site bookmarked.

  22. That's because Brian has included alt attributes in his image tags. When people can't see images or don't choose to see images, words conveying similar information show up instead. It's important to include alts to make sure web pages are accessible to those who don't benefit from graphics. The alts are actually here, but they're displayed in dark text on a dark background. Affected links include three in the header (Main logo, Summerfest ad, Long Wongs, and WSSP), eleven in the left sidebar (Features, Power 50, Link Report, Draft, Milwaukee Brewers, Sounds, Stars, Manatees, Power, Helena Brewers, and Arizona Brewers), and eight in the right sidebar (Fan Fest, Player Index, Store, Fan Forum, Scoreboard, Article Crawler, Transactions, and Birthdays). Luckily, Brian has two styles already in place in his CSS that would address this quickly and easily. It should boil down to simple copy and paste. He can add either class="NavLink" or class="RightBarLink" to the affected anchor tags (not the image tags) and get an adequate result without having to deal with any new styles. The two styles are identical except for two things: 1. RightBarLink has a 1 pixel dotted border on the bottom while NavLink has no border. 2. NavLink changes colors when the link is hovered over or clicked on. The fix works great in Firefox 2.0, SeaMonkey 1.0.4, and Camino 1.0.2. Mozilla Suite 1.7.13, Opera 8.52, Netscape 7.2, and IE 5.2.3 (Mac) each leave tolerable borders around the text. (I tried adding a img {border: none; } to the CSS, but it doesn't help those browsers.) Netscape 8 would probably render the page the same way as Firefox, SeaMonkey, and Camino. Sorry, I don't have that other awful Microsoft browser, which likes to screw up everything it can. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Unfortunately, something seems to break this function entirely in Safari-based browsers (Safari, OmniWeb, etc.), at least in Jaguar. However, the alts do display appropriately on other sites. Fixing that issue might be a more daunting task. I can't offer any advice about that. Here are screen shots showing the 'fix' using class="NavLink" in SeaMonkey 1.0.4. Note that the only time the page looks this way is when images aren't loaded. Left Sidebar: http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a244/casey1992/boardpics/bfnet/bf_left.jpg Right Sidebar: http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a244/casey1992/boardpics/bfnet/bf_right.jpg
  23. I'll answer my own question. Daron's at his grandmother's funeral.
  24. It sounds like Craig. Did anyone catch an explanation?
  25. If I remember correctly from last season, a guy can go to the AFL if he has one year or less in the majors. That would exclude Corey.
