1. OK, Adam, now you're right! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
2. I sure hope that 1971 isn't indicative of this guy's birth year. That's a little old for being childish.
3. Stats Debate: Quality Starts, Wins, and ERA
4. I was under the impression that it was based on defense, as catcher and DH weren't included. I'm not here to argue, of course. I just want to get it right when it's time to explain the concept the next time around. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
5. Thanks for pointing out the Dan Fox stuff. I remember reading it before, but I didn't remember where. It almost seems like we need more than one spectrum: one based on offense, one based on current defensive value, and the one by Bill James. It looks to me like James' spectrum still matches up the best to the ease or difficulty of moving players to another position.
6. Here the CF and 2B OPSs for both leagues combined since 1997. I didn't arbitrarily choose the years; when Baseball Prospectus wouldn't load 1996, I stopped. By the way, thanks (not), Baseball Prospectus, for your new funky, non-intuitive positional averages format. I'm not exaggerating. It's really, truly, difficult to use. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif Year 2B OPS CF OPS CF minus 2B 1997 0.734 0.758 0.024 1998 0.729 0.762 0.033 1999 0.761 0.786 0.026 2000 0.751 0.785 0.034 2001 0.738 0.759 0.022 2002 0.714 0.754 0.040 2003 0.736 0.760 0.024 2004 0.741 0.771 0.030 2005 0.745 0.755 0.010 2006 0.732 0.739 0.0072006 is a ridiculously small sample, of course, and I don't know what difference might be significant. I'll leave that up to someone else.
7. I don't believe Russ was trying to state an opinion at all. His post adds to the stats mothership provided rather than refuting them. He's just illustrating where endaround was coming from (2B = CF). What would be cool is one of his Excel graphs comparing the two positions for as many years as he could stand entering.
8. Hey, Bill, don't ya think it might have something to do with the fact that Dave has only 5 starts at home and 5 on the road? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
9. In his blog, Al first turned me on to the defensive spectrum a couple years ago. He used it the opposite of the way I posted it a couple messages above. Then I went to another message board and someone said, "No, it's the other way!" I did a Google search, and seven sites, including A Bill James Primer, did it as I just posted. Two sites, including Al's, turned it around. So I figured I should go with the majority, giving extra credit to the Bill James Primer. I guess the main thing is to make sure we're doing an 'apples to apples' comparison. Otherwise, of course, the points are the same.
10. The defensive spectrum can cause dyslexia. Bill James set it up this way: - - 1B - LF - RF - 3B - CF - 2B - SS - - It's probably best to post it whenever we use it, just to avoid confusion. At any rate, the initial purpose of the spectrum was to look at defense. That's probably why catcher was initially excluded; you can't move a catcher around like you can a shortstop. Later on, people started using the it for offense, too. With offense, things tend to match up to the spectrum, but numbers can shift over time. So while CF and 2B offense are currently relatively equal offensively, you're still more apt to convert a second baseman to center field than vice versa.
11. You might also find a date in one of the Acapulco bars. You probably wouldn't approve of him, though. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
12. ¡Puedo hablar y comprender bastante español para sobrevivir, pero si una palabra está deletreando incorrectamente, estoy desorientado! [i can speak and understand enough Spanish to get by, but when a word's spelled wrong, I'm lost!]
13. I honestly think that players and former players have trouble thinking a stat can be meaningless or due to chance. (Well, they might with the birthday thing.) All Bill would really have to do is give a 'small sample size' alert.
14. I have no problem with any stat that's presented. The problem occurs when inappropriate meaning is attached to it. Heck, just about every stat is good for trivia purposes. I remember the TV guys pimping Omar Vizquel's birthday batting average last year. Stuff like that is fine as long as you don't try to make something of it.
15. greeg, you're close. Silk = seda. (Vestido, depending on context, means either dress or suit.)
16. I'll toss in one more stat just because I remember it. Career-wise, coming into the season, Billy's OPSs vs. lefties and righties were both almost exactly .760. I don't remember which one had the slight edge. I don't think we could easily find those exact numbers right now, and I'm too lazy to pull out a calculator. I do remember the reason I looked it up. It had to do with a worst case scenario in a Hall-Koskie platoon. .760 or so is much better than Corey's recent years vs. lefties. Anyhoo, getting back on subject, Billy may well be a better hitter vs. lefties, but I wouldn't expect the split to be so dramatic as time goes on.
17. Just a thought... is it possible that greeg35, heresrobin, and brewerjamie15 have the same provider and that the problem's on that end? What I've been getting on the forums is normal for me: a generally excellent response with the occasional, but periodic burp. greeg35, I assume your father bought you a suit and not a dress. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I have no clue what deseta means.
18. First I want to welcome zzzmanwitz and hkdakd. I can tell both are going to be solid contributors to this forum. Regarding Billy's splits, this is a time where I'd like to see how he's done throughout his minor league career. Initially in the majors, we saw the exact opposite, with Billy hitting righties better. Around last May or so, things turned around. In other words, we need to beware of small samples. Here's the difference between J.J. and Billy. J.J. is significantly younger and has the pedigree; he's advanced pretty much steadily throughout his career. Billy has struggled, scratched, and clawed his way to where he is. That's admirable, too. Unlike J.J., Billy hasn't sustained his level of success for a long period. While I think Billy will be just fine and have continued success, we still once again have to at least consider that we're looking at a small sample. What should be done with Billy? He should be starting every day unless he proves to us that he shouldn't be. It's fine to give him a regular spot wherever, but he absolutely should be playing SS or 2B whenever those spots are open. It's easier to replace J.J.'s or Rickie's offense with an outfielder. It's not that way only on this team; it'd be that way on most teams.
19. Tengo conexión por línea conmutada y no he tenido ningunos problemas excepcionales. [i have dial-up and I haven't had any unusual problems.] EDIT: It was pointed out to me that 'problemas' is masculine. I couldn't let that go by. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
20. Someone on another forum said that Schroeder has already told us that the American League doesn't steal a lot of bases. Please say it isn't so. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif

23. Here's an example of something mentioned in an in-game thread that could easily be spawned off into a new thread. The game prompted the question, but the answer covers a broader period of time. From today's in-game thread:
24. I haven't noticed how they're doing things this year, but the Braves generally flip-flop their radio and TV guys mid-game.
25. It was mentioned on one of this morning's articles: Ned's giving him time off to work in the cage. It sounds a lot like what Ned did with J.J. last year.
