  1. One of the things that was happening before the existence of the Stats Forum was that people were explaining the same stats over and over again. Now, in many cases, it's possible to simply provide a link.
  2. I think Travel is too narrow for a whole forum, but I do see BrewCrewKid's point. It seems to be a toss-up as to whether this type of discussion belongs in Off Topic vs. the Major or Minor League forums. I think it'd be cool to find a home for the fantasy stuff. Would it make sense to combine Fantasy with Statistical Analysis?
  3. One of the nice new features on Jeff's site is the availability of a Firefox search plugin. Users should note that this search works with last names only.
  4. I think Wynegar was initially a Melvin choice.
  5. Yeah, I just said the same thing this morning in weirdos19's lineup thread on the Major League forum. There just aren't any lineups vs. righties that are very pretty.

  7. Ben told us a couple weeks ago that he felt he needed to be carrying a few more pounds. But I'm not sure how a player can "bulk up" in the right places while trying to be easy on his lat/shoulder/pec area. As far as his heart, I'm sure his EKG is fine. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ---------------- EDIT: Anyway, the reason I came to this thread was to see opinions on the Bell barrel-roll. Was that play dirty or not?
  8. I don't think big screen and cable would make a bit of difference. But TiVO might. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  9. I, for one, hate duplicate threads. Of course, many threads are borderline. I'm happy to let the moderators make the determination, at least as long as they provide the link to the thread where they'd like us to talk. I think the 'blue' thing works to a degree. But because not every end user is going to see 'blue', I'm not a huge fan of using color to convey meaning. I'll acknowledge that 'blue' will probably work 90% of the time, though. I have to say that I'm the owner of a pretty good sarcasm meter, so I generally don't have a lot of trouble spotting sarcastic posts and acting accordingly (leaving the sarcasm alone or adding more) http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif. In my own posts, I tend to use the smile or wink emoticon. Of course, there's a flaw with that, too, as not everyone is going to load those images. [brian, on your new 'dream' message board, you should be adding alt attributes to your emoticons; if people can't see the wink image, alt=";-)" will still allow readers to see ;-) in text.] BCU, except for occasional rants (Russ Branyan would be an example), I respect and enjoy your posts. I think you're a hair too sensitive about your threads being locked, though. Many Brewerfan.net posters go out of their way to say something like, "Mod, if this fits in better elsewhere, please feel free to lock." If you're locked, you can copy and paste the same thing to that other thread. Another suggestion I have for you is to use links more often. [if you don't understand the link function, it seems that moderators are glad to make a 'repair'. Just post the long link and request that someone fix it for you.] Anyway, you frequently post new threads with news, and I trust your information because you always turn out to be right http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif. But someone else will end up looking up the link, just to be sure. (As I said, I don't bother to do that because I trust you.) In the case of this discussion, a link to whatever was locked would have been convenient for us to fairly judge what happened and offer suggestions for you and the moderators in the future.
  10. I remember Geno flying through here early in the season and saying he hadn't had much time to post. I don't recall seeing him since that time. I'd simply guess real life is taking priority. I believe the only reason we're not seeing his name on the active list is that he hasn't posted in a couple months. The 'Active Members List' seems to stop with those who've last posted around June 17th.
  11. Quoth ESPN's stats glossary:
  12. The scorer changed the Cirillo call. It's now a hit.
  13. "are there "strike-through" tags?" -------------------------------------- In HTML mode, do this: Put your text here
  14. By the way, plain text mode is excellent for demonstrating both kinds of code in the same message.
  15. I think it had a "fake Brian" user name and said that Brewerfan.net's forums were shutting down.
  16. Anyone catch Daron's Sheets interview? Ben floored him at one point. Daron mentioned that he'd been excercising and keeping himself in great shape, then asked him if it helped the healing process. Ben simply said, "No."
  17. I'd also like to see information which can tell us whether or not a player actually is streaky.
  18. By the way, here's the formula for OBP: (H+BB+HBP) / (AB+BB+HBP+Sacrifice Flies) And here's the formula for slugging pct.: Hits + Doubles + (2*Triples) + (3*Homers)/AB or you could do: Singles + (2*Doubles) + (3*Triples) + (4*Homers)/AB The second formula is better at showing how slg. pct. actually works. The first formula is a better fit for how most stat lines are presented (it saves a step or so). Chose the one you like, though; you'll get the same thing in the end.
  19. Oops .... wrong thread. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/embarassed.gif
  20. It looks like you already have enough to compute slugging percentages. If you have sac flies, you'd have everything you need for OBP. If you lack those, maybe you can just compute OBP without them. Someone else would have to fill you in on the construction of a SABER-based lineup (which spots emphasize OBP, slugging or total OPS). rluzinski can probably also fill you in on some new stuff that came out in a book this year. You might want to try one of those lineups, too.
  21. Sac flies count against OBP. Sac bunts don't count either way (just as in BA and SLG). Here's the OBP formula: (H+BB+HBP) / (AB+BB+HBP+Sacrifice Flies)
  22. Miscellaneous thoughts: Correlating to runs scored, Dan Fox puts RC formulas at .958 (simple) and .964 (current, more complicated Bill James formula). Here's an example of a full season. Does this formula get more accurate with large samples? [li]2004 AL: .333 OBP x .433 SLG x 78,731 AB = 11,352 vs. 11,358 actual runs2004 NL: .329 OBP x .423 SLG x 88,622 AB = 12,333 vs. 12,018 actual runs[/li] [*]Russ, you've mentioned (very minor) flaws with using OBP times SLG times AB. Can you refresh our memories?
  23. It sounds like Russ' blog caused the situation. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  24. I think the spring webcasts have made that evident, too. Ash already has a major league job, but I do heart Tucson's Ryan Radke.
