    Southwest Brewer, I think you've found the way to get your answers! Start threads over here one stat at a time. That would seem to be one of the purposes of this forum that's been underutilized. In the case of OPS in general, I'd say JoeH33's breakdown is a good way to get going. It's simple and to the point. After getting used to that, it pays to look at positions on an individual basis. Baseball Prospectus offers league positional averages going back to 1972. On that site, you'll have to add OBP and SLG to get OPS. Keep in mind that positional numbers bounce around somewhat from year to year. If I'm trying to determine what a shortstop should be hitting, for instance, I might look at both leagues for the past 5 years. You end up with a good feel for the numbers that way. The extra work wouldn't be necessary if all you want to do is back up a statement like, "Hardy's offense was above average among NL shortstops in 2005." Run Estimation for the Masses (Hardball Times, Dan Fox) is nice for getting people going, too.

    Although I'd recommend a browser change for other reasons (security and rendering issues), in the narrow scope of your question, I'm recommending another browser simply as part of the process of elimination. If this phenomenon occurs in every browser, you'd likely be able to assume that this issue is caused by something that's working system-wide. If it doesn't, someone more knowledgeable than I could likely help you with IE/AOL settings.

    Russ typed it right. Quoth his study:Not a very high correlation, but there's a slight trend for batting average to increase with contact rate. Better correlation than BA and as expected, OBP increases with a decrease in contact rate. This makes sense, since players that strike out a lot often times have their share of walks as well. SLG increases with decreasing contact rate. It also correlates better with contact rate than either BA or OBP. OPS correlates better with contact rate than anything else. There's a clear inverse relationship between contact rate and OPS.This is very important: Russ mentions that "correlation does not imply causation". The results simply indicate that SLG and contact rate are "interconnected".

    The pinned thread, SABR FAQ - First Draft, has a lot of good information. It's far from all-inclusive, but there are a lot of links to get you started. I think the idea of tacking "Draft" onto the FAQ was that it could eventually develop the basis for something more permanent. No one's gotten that far, yet. I like pogokat's idea of expanding the existing site stat glossary. Some sort of paragraph/hyperlink combination with additional explanation would be cool. Links to other sources could be included, too.

    I think its certainly fair to suggest that at lower levels, the difference between a K and a BIP out would be greater than at the MLB level. Defense isn't as proficient at the Little League and high school levels, for instance. The chances of turning a double play would likely be less and the chances of committing an error would almost certainly be greater. I certainly sympathize with brewerjamie15's observation. Among other things, Ks cause hurt feelings and frustration. Russ is right, though, when he says what we like to watch and what's efficient are often two different things. I'll use the sac bunt example here. I love watching a BB, sac bunt, and single resulting in a run?at least until I realize that in a lot of cases it's not the best strategy.

    Over the winter and during spring training, a GM should really be looking for about 30 players (maybe more?) who'll be able to help the team over the course of 162 games. If the guys without options fall within that group, they should be kept on Opening Day.

    Gross has his leftiness in his favor. As for the pitching, I'm all for keeping the guys without options first. Quantity counts. Players who are optioned will get their shots soon enough.

    billyhallfan, I, for one, enjoy your posts. I encourage you to keep doing what you're doing. You have the right attitude. That, as much as anything, earns respect on a message board. You don't need stats every time (even though, in this case, you actually did refer to one). There's nothing wrong at all with presenting a concept, suggesting it makes some sense in your mind, and asking the opinions of others. Now, had you done something like this, it would have been different: But you didn't do that. And when you were put on the spot, you handled yourself well and with class.     If people want to call this site elite because the staff insists on netiquette, respect, decorum, a degree of substance to a post, a cursory effort to spell, avoiding serial one-liners, not repeating the same thing over and over, etc., so be it. What's bad is when this site is called elite because the perception arises that there's an intolerance for certain points of view. I don't agree with the cause-effect connection billyhallfan made in don's aforementioned thread. But I don't see anything in his post that I'd classify as 'far below this board'. Certainly, there was no arrogance involved. Even if one perceives the rationale behind a thread to be flawed, that doesn't mean there isn't value. What ended up being really cool in this case was the excellent responses the initial post provoked from Brewer Fever. Brian's right. There's no reason to be a jerk. Even the posts with netiquette issues are best handled with a degree of class. I'd say that's especially true when responding to new posters. I've seen a lot of people come in with rough edges that end up being smoothed out quite nicely.

    You're right. I don't know what I was thinking; I've known that since I was a kid. ROE affects OBP, too. This guy's OBP would be .800, which is still outstanding.

    The stat that would be outstanding is the player's perfect 1.000 on base percentage. Plate appearances which result in the player reaching via an error aren't included in OBP calculations. If the hit was a single, slugging percentage would be .500.
