  1. I'd just take the quality starts stat it for what it is, realize its limitations (as CheezWizHed has pointed out), and ignore the fact that it's poorly named. It's usefulness is limited, but it's not so useless that it tells us nothing at all.

  3. All this proposal really does is revert to what was the de facto strike zone before 2009 and the de jure strike zone before 1996. Going back once again to the article linked to in post 20… In other words, the 1996 rule didn't change much; the change occurred with the implementation of the Zone Evaluation system in 2009. I'm not too concerned about the effect on the pace of the game or even the offense. But I think the fact hitters are pointing out that unhittable pitches are being called as strikes is pretty compelling. Here's a graphic showing the history of the strike zone since 1950. Click on it to see a larger version.
  4. From the article linked to in post 20: "Technicians set the ZE system manually to define the bottom of the strike zone at the hollow of the knee at the stride point for every pitch."
  5. After poking around, it looks like umps are actually evaluated, but their scores are so high that I'd be surprised if anyone's getting into much "trouble" over his calls. The current tool is called the Zone Evaluation system. It's been installed in all ballparks since 2009. It allows umps to review their calls immediately after a game. Previously, QuesTec was installed in 11 parks, and several days elapsed before feedback was available. PITCHf/x has been around since 2006. It's maintained by Sportvision and is supported by MLB. It doesn't seem like that long since these tools have been in place. I never paid attention to the existence of that big honkin' thing hanging from the Loge railing until recently. Here's a 2015 article summing up what's happened over the years: Baseball’s strike zone has expanded, and hitters aren’t happy I've attached a photo of the gadget behind home plate at Miller Park that's used for ball/strike evaluation. There are other components under the scoreboard out in center field.
  6. That's what I figured about the water. The dirt in front of home plate has stayed wet throughout the game, and I'd be surprised if the hose were brought out for in-game touch-ups. The other night, the area around home plate was so wet that there was actually drying stuff spread on the batter's boxes.
  7. Brewers had burned their challenge. Yeah, they had used their challenge, but beginning in the seventh inning, teams can ask the umpires to request a replay.
  8. Jhan Mariñez finally makes his Brewer debut with a nice sixth inning. He walked Céspedes but followed up to strike out the side. Walks have been his issue, so it'll be interesting to see how things work out.
  9. Mr. Ed was the only horse to hit an inside the park home run against Sandy Koufax.
  10. BA observed that it looks like the Mets have put "heavy water" on the dirt in front of home plate. Does that mean that there's something different about the water, or does it simply mean that the dirt was watered heavily?
  11. Are they actually graded? I thought the computer was meant to be a teaching tool with no actual job evaluation involved. Still, if the computer has caused the zone to become lower, I suppose it can put it back to where it was.

  13. As BA put it, "the one time that Villar gets conservative." He could have made it to third on his double, but he couldn't have anticipated that the throw would be as far off as it was. EDIT: Jonathan follows up by being thrown out at third on a grounder.
  14. I'd still go through the settings just to make sure they're as you like them. Doing that will also help you establish a routine for the times you re-check them after updates. My Firefox for Mac isn't behaving as well as I'd like. I should try to isolate the problems when I can. I think my profile is about four years old; that can't help. Outside of that, now that you point it out, I wonder if there's simply an issue that extends across platforms. I've noticed more and more sites whining about ad blockers. Forbes is the worst as it won't let you in at all. Adding insult to injury, their advertising and other junk are very obtrusive. Page loads are slow, and stuff reloads while you're reading.
  15. I ran across an article that questioned the validity of the heat map. I'm not in a position to argue either way. There definitely was a case for replacing Turner Field, and there was a case for moving to a new location. The sneaky and underhanded way it was done is the big issue. The public meeting was set up so only 12 people could speak. It was arranged for people to speak in support of the project to show up six hours early to get in line.
  16. I'd rather see the superlative call on that play than on a flyball that "just missed" when it didn't just miss.
  17. Broxton slipped my mind, but I'm willing to let a few days go by before I complain. I see the point about Flores. But with the struggles he's had, I see a double-edged sword. It might not be the best thing for him to play poorly on an everyday basis. I'm sure he's working in the cage and all that.
  18. I can see the point about Hill, but who would you play instead of Presley and Nieuwenhuis?
  19. Well, we got to add a thread to WOAH SOLVDD for the first time in seven years.
  20. Great sac bunt down the first base line by Davies.
  21. Yeah, the trade was leaked early. But Alderson and Collins were both sort of goofy in front of the press. Melvin handled it better.
  22. I don't know, but Duda was the starter when I first posted the lineup before noon. I've made the corrections.
